J. R. Laslie

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home for J. R. Laslie, conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch pastor of the Baptist Church.

Mr. Laslie was born in Breckenridge County, Ky., on Dec. 31, 1868 and passed away at 4:30 Monday afternoon, January 8, 1945 at the home of his son, W. H. Laslie of the Prairie Center community.

Mr. Laslie grew up in Kentucky and began his teaching career in that state. Also in Kentucky he became a Christian and a member of the Methodist faith. About 31 years ago he came to Texas where he continued his favorite profession of teaching. His pupils are to be found in several communities of this and adjoining counties and to many of whom he was Professor Laslie, a teacher beloved. He eventually gave up teaching and lived on a farm but his heart was still in teaching. About eight years ago he suffered a stroke and was confined to his bed practically all of the time. His faithful wife, who passed away last September tenderly cared for him during most of these years. When they were no longer able to maintain their home, they went to live with the son, where both remained until their life’s journey was finished.

Mr. Laslie is survived by his two children, the son, W. H. Laslie, and the daughter, Mrs. A. J. Tibiletti, of Victoria, and seven grandchildren, Mrs. Vivian Laslie Evans, Willie Mae, Lonnie B., Mary Ann and Raymond Laslie, and Phillip and Ralph Tibiletti. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Susan Harper, of Evansville, Ind., several nephews and nieces, one of whom is Mrs. T. D. Dannels of Palacios.
