Melinda Simmons Smith Jones
written by: jCrayton

When Melinda was 9 years old, she was hired out as a Baby Sitter to a family named Shelton & Eliza Helm. She remained with them until she was an adult and ready to move out on her own. In 1900 she married Nolan Smith Sr. In 1910 he died leaving her to raise her infant son alone. In 1910 her sister-in-law, Milly Simmons w/o  Lake Simmons Sr., was killed, leaving her son without a parent. She took Little Lake in to live with her and helped to care for Nolan while she worked as a cook in cafes and domestic homes. Aunt Melinda became a mother figure to Little Lake.

Melinda met Jerry Jones, that lived in same housing units. He was a cook, too, but already showed signs of being an alcoholic and it worsened throughout the years. They were married  before 1915 in Matagorda Co TX, buying property and moving to Markham TX, an oil camp town, building a home and a restaurant. Markham , TX was a Dry Town, no alcohol sold within city limits, but they prospered for many years. There was no activity or entertainment within 6+ miles  for the people of Markham it was all they had . By 1920 -1925 her brother, Lake Simmons Sr., moved into the community, built his home and started his family.

it's not known why and I never heard  not even an inkling of the problem but Aunt Malinda and Papa Lake never spoke to each other, and I never saw or remember seeing R .L. in her place or Aunt Melinda ever mentioning his name.

Aunt Melinda, was a soft spoken easy to understand and love person, helped anyone she could..

When Jerry's drinking became to much for her to bear, she moved to Galveston, TX, which became my retreat during summer break from school. I don't recall her ever coming back to Markham after she left.

She died in 1970 at the age of 94. Wonderful Blessed years on this earth. She had one son and no grandchildren known to me.

Rest In Peace Auntie, you are well remembered and will always be Loved by me, "Little Red"

Lake Simmons, Jr.
(son of Lake Simmons, Sr.)

Lake Simmons, Jr.

Lake Simmons, Jr. was born on June 2, 1898 to Lake and Millie Simmons in Brazoria County, Texas.

Lake spent his childhood and adult life around Brazoria, Matagorda and Nueces Counties.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Miss Elizabeth Collins in December of 1942.

Later in life, Lake moved to Markham, Texas and here he united with Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Aldridge.

He lived to achieve the status of a Major Senior Citizen. The wisdom and guidance he so freely offered, the loving and caring way he had of showing his displeasures, the gentle touch always will be with us. All he had to give in life was through laughter to his friends. He was a bright ray of sunshine and a colorful rainbow that radiated and touched all that he loved and respected. His last several years were spent in Leisure Lodge Convalescent Home, Palacios, Texas. His many memories will remain in the hearts of his loving wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons, two daughters, Mrs. Jonnie Fisher of San Diego, California and Mrs. Lois Hawkins of Texas, two granddaughters, Cynthia Reid of San Diego, California and Yvonda Reid of Corpus Christi, one great-grandson, Marcus Ryen MacArthur, one brother, Robert Lee Simmons and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
