Thomas Earl Slone Family
By Shelley Mayfield

Thomas Earl Slone, a resident of Matagorda County since 1921, was a successful rancher and rice farmer. He was born in Rogers, Texas, in 1888, and was the son of Jesse Renfro Slone and Rebecca Keziah Jones. He was one of five children. In addition to his four brothers and sisters: Virgil, Alice, Jones and Minnie, he had sixteen half-brothers and half-sisters. Jesse Renfro Slone came to Texas from Alabama when he was ten years old. After making frequent trips by wagon to Palacios to camp and fish, the family moved to a location near Ganado called Whitehall. Tom Slone was interested in raising livestock and bought his first piece of land with money made by raising and selling mules, the basic source of farm power at that time.

In 1921, Thomas Slone moved to a location near Markham, called Northern Headquarters, where he farmed rice. On October 13, 1924, he married Nellie A. Johnson, daughter of Albert Sid Johnson and Nellie Hughes of Louise, Texas. They moved to Collegeport where Thomas farmed rice and leased the Slough Ranch for cattle. In 1926, they moved to Pierce and farmed rice on the Pierce Estate.

In 1927, they bought what became known as the Slone Ranch at Palacios. The ranch was formerly the Williamson Ranch and prior to that was farmed by a Japanese native who farmed rice using artesian wells.

Thomas and Nellie Slone had two children: Thomas E., Jr., born on November 28, 1926, and died in 1948; and Gloria Gay. Gay married George L. Harrison of Palacios on July 11, 1948 and they had six children: Sandra, Holly, Shelly, Janet, Slone and John.

Thomas Slone's interest in ranching and animals led to his building a rodeo arena and stands on his ranch which were used by the public. He raised the livestock for his rodeos. His "Fourth of July" rodeos were a source of fun for many.

During World War II, he organized greyhound races for the soldiers stationed in the area. Many humorous incidents occurred when the soldiers, having no experience at riding horses, mounted up to follow the hounds as they chased rabbits across the prairie. This entertainment gave the soldiers a memorable taste of Texas ranch life.

In later life, Thomas Slone raised race horses which he raced at the local tracks. This eventually led to racing horses at Ruidoso Downs, in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

Tom and Nellie Slone were charter members of the Palacios Trail Ride Association and made the rides for many years. Tom always seemed to have an extra horse if someone wanted to make the ride.

Because of his interest in the young people of the area. Tom donated land to be used as a location of the Recreation Center, and the Little League and Pony League Ball Parks. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

After a long and interesting life, Tom Slone died in Palacios on August 10, 1971.

My name is Jesse Renfro Slone. I was born in Alabama in 1858 to John and Jermina Slone I was one of eight children. We came to Texas when I was 10 years old. We all grew up in Milam and Coryell County in Texas. While living in Rogers, Texas, my younger brother Sammy was sent to water the horses in the river and was attacked by Indians and scalped. He was 16 years old. My older brother James was killed in the Civil War. He was 15 years old. I married Martha Bernice Smith and we had eleven children. I ran a blacksmith shop in Rogers in 1893. In 1900, we moved to Killeen where I had a general store. In 1914 & 1915, we lived in Marlin where we operated the Artesian Hotel. We moved to Whitehall near Ganado and farmed the land. We finally settled in Bay City in 1926 and bought a home on Nichols Street. My son Thomas Earl Slone married Nellie A. Johnson in 1924. In 1927 they bought land and became successful ranchers and rice farmers. The land became known as the Slone Ranch at Palacios. It was formerly the Williamson Ranch and prior to that was farmed by a Japanese native who farmed rice using artesian wells. Lanford McKinley "Keet or Keeter" Slone Family
By Charles R. Slone

Lanford McKinley "Keet or Keeter" Slone was born on July 31, 1902, in Wharton County to Jesse and Mattie Smith Slone. He came to Matagorda County in the late 1920's to work on his brother Tom's rice farm in the Markham area.

After a few rice crops working for his brother, he began farming rice on his own. He courted Gussie Marian Fox, daughter of Charles and Clara Augusta "Gussie" Fox. Gussie was born in Oklahoma on August 26, 1912, and moved from Oklahoma to Palacios in 1917 with her family. Keet Slone and Gussie Fox were married in the home of her parents in Palacios on October 20, 1931 They began their married life in Bay City, but moved to Collegeport in February of 1933. In the fall of 1936 after rice harvest, they moved back to Bay City where he continued to farm rice and raise cattle for the rest of his life.

Keet Slone had a herd of commercial cattle, and for a number of years, he conducted a cattle drive to winter pasture, complete with a chuckwagon, from Collegeport across the Colorado River bridge, through Bay City to Sargent, a distance of approximately sixty miles. In the spring, the cattle were driven back to Collegeport. His sons enjoyed roping the baby calves that couldn't keep up with the herd so they could be put in a trailer for hauling to the next stop. Along with his commercial cattle, he also raised some registered Brahman cattle, and established a cross-breeding program to produce Braford cattle. One of his Braford Bulls was chosen Grand Champion Bull at the Wharton County Fair in the 1940's. About the same time he also showed registered Brahman cattle at various fairs, including the Matagorda County Fair, the Wharton County Fair, the Houston Fat Stock Show, and the Texas State Fair

In connection with his rice farming and livestock business, Keet was a director of the Bay City Gin and Milling Company, the Independent Rice Warehouse and Rice Dryer, and the Bay City Packing Company He was also a director of the American Brahman Breeders Association, a charter member of the MidCoastal Brahman Breeders, and one of the organizers of the Matagorda County Fair Association. Further demonstrating his community involvement, he was a charter member of the Knife and Fork Dinner Club and a director of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce in the 1950's.

Keet Slone raised quarter horses for use on his ranch. Because of his love for cattle and his love and appreciation of a well-trained horse, his favorite recreation was calf roping.

Keet and Gussie Slone's children were Charles Renfro of Richmond, Texas; Robert Edwin Slone (1933-1934) who died in infancy; Wayne Todhunter Slone of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and Barbara Ann Slone, who married Mike Crotts of Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Keet Slone was a faithful Christian and a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church, Bay City After the death of Lanford McKinley Slone on August 30, 1960, his family scattered, but he still has descendants involved in Matagorda County agriculture and grandsons who compete in rodeo roping.

After Keet's death Gussie married William George Correll (1912-2009).

Robert Edwin Slone

Mr. and Mrs. Langford Slone, of Collegeport, have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their infant son, Robert Edwin, who died early Wednesday morning, following an illness of about ten days. The little fellow was just a few days past one year of age, yet during his short journey in this life had endeared himself to all. We know he is now numbered with the angel band waiting to welcome the ones who loved him so to that other shore.

The little body was prepared for burial and brought to the Palacios cemetery and brought to the Palacios cemetery where services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by Rev. G. F. Gillespie, and interment made under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.
