Jordan Thomas Washington, Sr. Family

Jordan T. Washington Sr. (January 18, 1898 - January 10, 1958), son of Frank and Ellen Washington, was born in born in Matagorda County. He is buried at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City, Texas.

Frank (January 18, 1875 - May 28, 1943*) and Ellen (August 7, 1876 - January 12, 1946) are buried at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City, Texas. *information from death certificate

His brother was Edway Washington (October 29, 1894 - January 28, 1963)

Jordan, Sr. married Ruth Ruby Spencer (October 20, 1904 – October 14, 1991) in Brazoria County, Texas on December 2, 1927 by W. S. Brent, Pastor, Mt. Olive Baptist. After the death of Jordan, Sr., Ruth married W. A. Sims (1903 - 1977) and they are buried at Jasper Cemetery, Crockett, Houston County, Texas.

J. Washington Services Set Here Friday

Funeral services for Professor Jordan T. Washington, 60, acting president of Mary Allen College, will be held Friday at 10 a. m. at the First Baptist Church here.

Prof. Washington was born January 18, 1898, in Bay City, and had lived in Lufkin since 1946. He died on January 10 in Crockett.

He served as dean of instruction at Royal College in Conroe for two years, principal of Bessmay Junior High School in Bessmay for 17 years, principal of Dunbar Junior and Senior High School for six years, and superintendent of the Forestville School District for two years.

He was dean of Mary Allen College for three years, and was acting president at the time of his death.

Prof. Washington was a member of First Baptist Church here, where he served as teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, chairman of the Board of Trustees, teacher of Brotherhood, and as a member of the Board of Deacons.

The remains will lie in state through Thursday at McCullough Funeral Home in Crockett.

Surviving Prof. Washington are his wife, Mrs. Ruth S. Washington; a son, J. T. Washington, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis C. Washington and Mrs. Ruth E. Hayes; one brother, Edward Travis Washington; seven grandchildren, two aunts and two uncles.

Phyllis Christine Washington is the daughter of Thomas Washington and Ruth Spencer Washington

Sister to Ruth and J. T. Washington, Jr.

Attended elementary and junior high school at Bessmay Colored School. Her family relocated to Lufkin, Texas where she graduated from Dunbar High School in 1950

Phyllis Christine Washington earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in 1953 and a Master of Science Degree in 1965 from Prairie View A&M College

On February 14, 1953 she united in marriage with Joe D. Washington.

She is the mother of Pertrilla, Joe Jr., and Kenneth Washington

Her teaching career began in 1962 in El Maton, Texas; moving to Port Arthur, Texas in 1965. There she spent 27 years as an educator in the Port Arthur Independent School District and a 32-year citizen of the city

An active member of New Hope Baptist Church, Sis. Phyllis Washington was a member of the Mass Choir; a teacher in Sunday School; a worker in Vacation Bible School; Chairperson of Eunice Circle; and secretary to the Women's Missionary Union, Golden Band Senior Citizens Ministry and the Church Music Council.
