Dave Young

Funeral services for Dave Young, 88, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, November 3, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Enterprise Baptist Church, Bay City, with the Rev. J. Weldon Gilbert, pastor and the Rev. Danny Davis of Jordan Grove Baptist Church of Houston officiating.

Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

He was born in Sargent, Texas, Thursday, November 5, 1912, to John Young and Nellie Mack Young, and passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at Park Plaza Hospital in Houston.

Young graduated from Jack Yates High School, Houston, Texas. Afterward, he attended Prairie View A & M College, Prairie View, Texas. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics.

Later, he attended Texas Southern University in Houston and received his Master’s Degree. Extensive study was achieved from the University of California in Los Angeles.

After serving several years in the military, his professional career in education began at A. G. Hilliard High School in Bay City.

He was later bestowed the honor of becoming the first principal of Linnie Roberts Elementary School in Bay City.

Among his civic involvements included membership with the Kiwanis Club.

His religious affiliations included his devoted membership with Enterprise Baptist Church. There, he served faithfully for many years, which included his former post as financial secretary, and as a deacon.

His examples and principles by which he lived will always be remembered by those he served.

Survivors include: two sisters, Isabella Lewis and Millie Pierce and one brother, Willard Young; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Among those who preceded him in death included his wife, Naomi Boone Young.

Funeral services for Naomi Boone Young, 83, of Bay City were held at 11 a. m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998 at Tyree Chapel A. M E. Church in Bay City, Rev. R. R. Simon officiating. Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery.

Young was born Feb. 2, 1915 in Lynnville, TX to Hampton Boone and Carrie McNeil Boone and died Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Legacy-Matagorda Healthcare Center. She obtained an education from Powell Point High School in Kendleton, TX. There a desire to become an educator matured.

She further her education at Prairie View A & M College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree, Texas Southern University, obtaining a Master's degree, and then additional studies at the University of California in Los Angeles.

As a retired educator, her professional career spans over 38 years, which included many years of teaching students. She taught at Mable Kennedy School in Cedar Lane, the Jasper Independent School District, the LaMarque Independent School District, the Van Vleck Independent School District, and the Bay City Independent School District.

Her examples, principles, and counsel will be remembered by those she served. Young's civic involvement included memberships with the Olive Leaf Chapter #219, Order of Eastern Star, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. "Sister Young" was a devoted member of Tyree Chapel A. M. E. Church in Bay City where she served faithfully.

Her Christian involvement included participation as a choir member,, a Stewardess, with the Missionary Society, and the Daughters of Allen. She leaves a spiritual legacy to her family and friends, and will be remembered for her radiant smile, charm, graciousness, and zest for life.

Young is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dave Young, Jr. of Bay City; god-daughter and son-in-law, Carrie Armelin Metoyer and Reginald of Houston, Joyce Petteway of Los Angeles; sisters, Erma Boone Stevens and Lottie Boone Witherspoon, both of Bay City; sisters-in-law, Isabel Young Lewis, and Millie Young Pierce; brother-in-law, Willard Young, all of Houston; nieces, Lois Armelin of Bay City, Brenda Armelin, and Arthurene Boone both of Bay City; nephews, Wellington Armelin, Jr. of Bay City, Hampton Armelin, and Alonzo Roy Armelin all of Bay City; great nieces and nephews; and extended family of relatives including a cousin, Dorothy Walton and devoted nephew, Willard Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Maude B. Harris and Fannie B. Armelin; and brothers, Lloyd Boone and Arthur Boone.

Servings as pallbearers were Wellington Armelin, Jr., Roy Armelin, Hampton Armelin, Willie Boulden, Willard Johnson, and Jason Metoyer.

Honorary pallbearers included the Tyree Chapel Sanctuary choir, Stewardess Board, daughters of Allen, and the Missionary Society, as well as the Olive Leaf Chapter #219, OES, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
