John was among those men; his remains were not recovered, and he is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was survived by his wife Ruby*; parents E. B. and Annie; three sisters: Miss Montie and Joyce Dacke and Mrs. Anna Belle Schulenberg; four brothers: Wayne, Bruce, Leslie and Charles Dacke.
* Ruby’s brother, Staff Sergeant Ira. B. Clements, was Killed In Action in Germany on March 25, 1945.

S/Sgt. Ira B. Clements, age 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Clements of Cedar Lane, lost his life in Germany on March 25th and J. H. Dacke S/1c, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Dacke of Cedar Lane and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Clements of Cedar Lane made the supreme sacrifice off of Iwo Jima on February 21, when the U.S.S. Bismarck Sea went down. Sgt. Clements enlisted in the United States Army in 1935, trained at Fort Sam and Camp McCoy Wisconsin and was sent overseas in December 1943. He had been wounded once, and had just been returned to active duty when he met his death.
S1/c Dacke, 19 years old entered service in March 1944, and had been
overseas since October 15, 1944. He was married to Miss Oree
Clements November 15, 1943. His wife resides now with her parents in
Cedar Lane. |

She is survived by her husband E. B. Dacke, three daughters, Miss Montie and Joyce Dacke and Mrs. Anna Belle Schulenberg, four sons, Wayne, Bruce, Leslie and Charles, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. H. Dacke, three sisters, Mrs. W. R. Klahn, Richmond, Texas, Mrs. R. E. Beach and Mrs. O. L. Watson, West Columbia, Texas. Two brothers, F. C. Burford, Palacios, Texas, J. P. Burford, Overton, Texas, one granddaughter, Linda Francis Schulenberg. Funeral services will be held from the West Columbia Methodist Church at 3 o'clock this afternoon, burial in West Columbia Cemetery. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Matchett-Newman Funeral Home.

DACKE, Elmer Bruce, 73, of Cedar Lane, died Thursday in Pasadena hospital. Funeral services held Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church with the Rev. Victor Edge and the Rev. Martin Rucker officiating. Burial in Roselawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Survivors include four sons, Bruce Dacke of Freeport, Wayne Dacke of Angleton, Leslie Dacke of Pasadena and Charles Dacke of Brazoria; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Belle Schulenberg of Freeport, Mrs. Montie Weathers of Cedar Lane, Mrs. Joyce Dacke of Conroe; 19 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Also, four brothers, Clyde Dacke of Bay City, Lloyd Dacke and Walter of Houston, and Carl Dacke of Kingsville.

invasion. On February 21, 1945, despite heavy gunfire, two Japanese
kamikaze planes hit the Bismarck Sea, first on the starboard
(right) side under the 40 mm gun (aft), (to the rear of the ship)
crashing through the hanger deck and striking the ship’s magazines.
The fire was nearly under control when the second plane struck the
aft elevator shaft, exploding on impact and destroying the fire
fighting saltwater distribution system, thus preventing any further
damage control. Shortly after, the order was given to abandon
ship. She sank beneath the waves in 90 minutes with the loss of 318
men.
Mrs. E. B. Dacke, age 46 years passed away Monday
at 1:00 o'clock after an illness of five days. Mrs. Dacke has been a
resident of Cedar Lane for several years.
