Private William Ernest Downer [November 6, 1893 - October 15, 1918] was born to William Downer [June 6, 1860 - April 10, 1948] and Fannie (Atkins) Downer [December 8, 1857 - January 1, 1947] who immigrated from England in 1883.  He was born at Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas.  He died from Broncho-Pneumonia [probable Spanish Flu] at the Base Hospital Camp Travis, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.  He was attached to 27th Company, 7th Battalion, 165th Depot Brigade, 36th (T Patch) Division. He is buried at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, Matagorda County, Texas.  Besides his parents he was survived by one brother and four sisters.  As best as can be determined from available records his family was living at Palacios, Matagorda County, Texas when he joined the Army and when he died.  He gave his occupation as farmer on his draft registration card.  His parents are buried near him at Hawley Cemetery.

 

 


 



 


Funeral Services Are Held For Mrs. Downer

Funeral services were held for Mrs. William Downer, 89, at the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home with the Rev. Aubrey Maxted officiating. Burial was in Hawley Cemetery.

Mrs. Downer had been a resident of Matagorda County for ____ 60 years, according to a report to The News from the funeral home.

Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. J. R. Andrews and Mrs. O. L. Sifford of Bay City, and Mrs. J. J. Owens of Blessing; one son, Pierce of Corpus Christi, and other relatives.

PASSED AWAY SATURDAY

 

Mr. William Downer, age 87 years, 10 months and 4 days, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. L. Sifford, Bay City, Texas, Saturday at 6:20 p.m.

 

Mr. Downer is survived by three daughters, Mrs. O. L. Sifford of Bay City, Mrs. J. H. Andrews, of Bay City, Texas, Mrs. J. J. Holmes of Blessing, Texas, one son Pierce Downer of Corpus Christi, Texas.

 

Funeral services will be held from the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. A. C. Maxted officiating.  Burial will be in the Hawley cemetery with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in charge.

 

Pallbearers are Mr. Robert Terry, Mr. Bert Logan, Mr. Lee Pierce, Mr. Albert Herreth, Mr. Steve Rickaway and Mr. Paul Wheeler.
