King Van Estate Cemetery

King Van/Vann (c1844-1850 - 1914) was a slave born in Matagorda County, Texas to Odo/Udo (c1800-1807 -  after 1896) and Fatuma/Fadooma Van (c1795-1800 - 1900) who were slaves brought from Africa.

A death record for King Van was filed September 2, 1914 by Abe Surrell. The age was recorded as 65, but the actual death date was not included.

King Van married Maria/Mariah Miller on March 19, 1867 in Matagorda County.

He was recorded on the 1867 Voters’ Registration for Matagorda County on August 14, 1867. He was #216 and the record indicates he was living in Precinct 2 and had been living in the state, county and precinct for 23 years. He signed his registration with an X. At the time of the registration he was living on the Samuel Graves Powell Plantation.

King and Maria had the following children:

1. Nancy Van b c 1869
2. Flattonia Van b c 1872
Flattonia married Oliver Sheppard (born c 1856) on December 28. 1886 in Matagorda County (Vol. B, Page 017)
Flattonia later married Dave Johnson (born c Oct 1863)
3. Elizabeth Van (b c 1874 - ____) married John Moore on April 29, 1898 in Matagorda County (Book B, Page 244)
4. Ceaser Van (12 Oct 1891 – 12 Jun 1957 death certificate. 1900 census birth as 1881.)

King Van registered his cattle brand and mark #1231 on July 4, 1871 in Matagorda County. The brand consisted of the letters K V and the mark was a Smooth crop and under bit in right, smooth crop left ear

The settlement that grew up around King Van’s property was known as Vann Settlement, Van, African and King Vann African Settlement and was primarily populated with Van family members.

Vann Settlement is situated on Buckner's Prairie in the William Rabb League #46. By at least 1894, Vann Settlement had a school. The school was held in a little white church building. In 1894, 22 children were enrolled in the school and in 1895, 34 children were enrolled.

King Van owned the property on which the cemetery is located. The property was transferred to his daughter Elizabeth “Lizzie” Vann Moore and then to his son, Ceasar. Ceasar deeded the property to Lizzie’s daughter, Rebecca Moore Cooper. Rebecca deeded the property to her great-granddaughter, Josephine Scott, in 1999. Josephine Scott is the land owner in 2023 and maintains the cemetery property..

Older Van family members are buried elsewhere on the original property. The first recorded burial in the cemetery was Dolph Price Moore who died May 10, 1967. The cemetery is still in use by the family and the most recent burial was Anolus Faye Sorrell Brinkley who died May 10, 2021.
