Matagorda Negro Schoolhouse
Matagorda County Historical Society

Our knowledge about its history is very vague; therefore, we can only conclude that this c.1904 building was given to the Negro Families of Matagorda as a school for their children around that same time.  The school had twenty-six pupils and one teacher by 1904 and thirty-seven pupils with one teacher in 1937.

The last graduating class is thought to have been held in 1953.

The Schoolhouse had been moved from its original location a couple of times before 2009 when it was moved to its current location here at the park.  It now has the dual purpose of serving as the Matagorda Historical Society headquarters as well as a resemblance of a small Schoolroom, open to the public on special occasions.

Present classroom furnishings have been donated as all the school furniture & potbelly stove had been previously removed and their whereabouts are unknown.  Donations of a Teacher’s Desk, Children’s Desks, School Books, etc. from 1904 to 1953 are still needed to create the look and feel of an old schoolroom.  We will also be very grateful for any information shared with us regarding the names of teachers, pupils, stories or pictures about this school.

We do not qualify for an official historical marker by the State of Texas; however, we have had a plaque made to designate it.

The Matagorda Historical Society meets in the Schoolhouse, located @ the park, on the 4th Monday of the month @ 5:00 p.m., January thru October.   Visitors are always welcome.

Notes

The schoolhouse was originally located on Cedar Street, between Center & Austin, directly in front of St. Peter’s Baptist Church; it was later moved to Lewis, behind the fire station and used as storage, before being relocated to the park.

Gulf Items

The Matagorda school building has been completely renovated, with new plastering and paint throughout. An electric light plant and other improvements have been added. That gives the Matagorda Independent School District two first class school buildings. There is a real need of a new school building in Matagorda for the Negro children. Their present building is far from adequate. It is a poor policy to conduct a school in a shack. It should be possible to give the Negro children a decent building within a year.
