Stella Mae Fisher
On April 17, 1932, a baby girl was born to Otis
Fisher, Sr. and Phoebe Fisher in Markham, Texas. They named her Stella
Mae. She would be the only girl with six (6) brothers, Z. B., George,
Willie, Joe Louis, Otis, Jr., and L. C., who preceded her in death.
Stella was baptized at an early age at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in
Markham, Texas.
Stella was married to Mr. Charlie Crockett of Bay
City, Texas. To this union, one daughter was born, Sandra Dale.
Stella attended public school in Markham, Texas. She
furthered her education with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas
Southern University and a Master of Science Degree in Education from
Prairie View A & M University in 1970. She did additional studies at the
University of St. Thomas.
Stella joined Boynton Chapel United Methodist Church
under the leadership of Rev. Elmer T. Albudy. Here she worked with the
Communion Stewards and the United Methodist Women, having served in a
number of capacities and participated in many other activities that she
got great joy from. She would remain a faithful member until her illness
prevented her from attending Church.
Stella started her 40+ years of teaching at Tidehaven
Elementary School, Matagorda County. After leaving Tidehaven she started
teaching at Charles R. Drew Elementary School. From there she would
further her career with the Houston Independent School District,
teaching at Burrus Elementary School. She then began her long teaching
career in the Fort Bend Independent School District, first at Kempner
High School and then Missouri City Junior High. She retired from
Missouri City Junior High School. Stella found that retirement was not
her “cup of coffee,” and she couldn’t keep still. After starting and
completing many projects at home and in the country, she came out of
retirement to begin teaching again at Holland Middle School in HISD. She
would retire from Holland Middle School on December 19, 2007.
She left her earthly home just the way she wanted, on
Sunday, February 25, 2008 at 7:29 p. m. after a long and courageous
battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends with lots of
singing and praying. She has now joined her father, mother and six
brothers.
A beautiful Christian life with many loving memories
will always remain in the hearts of her devoted and loving daughter,
Sandra Brown Goins and husband, Greg of Missouri City, Texas; two
granddaughters whom she adored, Kitwana (KiKi) and Amanda; a niece that
she raised as her daughter, Jo Ann Fisher of Pearland, Texas; two aunts,
Mrs. Dorothy Gillis of West Columbia, Texas and Mrs. Iola Jones of
Houston, Texas; four sisters-in-law – Mable Fisher of Markham, Texas,
Dorothy Fisher of West Columbia, Texas, JoAnn Roy of Tulsa, Oklahoma and
Johnnie Fisher of San Diego, California, and a host of nieces, nephews
(whom she took an active interest in their lives), cousins and friends
to celebrate her HOME GOING and cherish her memories.
