Newman Deward Cox

Newman Deward Cox, 65, of Bay City, died May 29. He was a resident of Bay City since 1945, a retired pipefitter and welder out of local No. 211. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 865 A. F. & A. M. Survivors include: wife, Alyne Raymond Cox of Bay City; mother, Mrs. Ray Cox of Iago; daughter, Judy Cox of Pearland; son, Raymond Cox of Matagorda; sisters, Joyce Wynn of Boling; and Jewelle Gossett of Richmond; grandson, Jon Cox of Matagorda. The funeral will be held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Saturday, May 31 at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Merle S. Waters officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale [Matagorda] Cemetery with Masonic graveside services. Pallbearers include: W. G. Fuller, C. B. Gilbert, J. M. Gonze, J. J. Brock, J. R. Mossier and T. R. Clark. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Staffa, Claude Staffa, Claude Hickey and Albert Younts. Arrangements made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Alyne Raymond Cox
March 7, 1916 - April 25, 2015

Alyne Raymond Cox passed away in Bay City, Texas, on April 26, 2015, at the age of 99.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Amanda Yeamans Raymond; her brothers, Jack and Thomas Raymond; and her husband Deward Cox.

Alyne was born on March 7, 1916 in Matagorda, Texas. She grew up in Matagorda, Old Gulf and New Gulf. She graduated from Boling High School. She raised her family in Bay City, and after the death of her husband, she moved her house to Matagorda. She was a world traveler, artist and member of many local organizations.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy of Pearland; and son, Raymond (Julie) of Matagorda. She is also survived by her grandson, Jon and his mother Kay; great-grandsons, Thomas (Megan) and David Cox, and great-great-granddaughter, Hailey Cox and her sister Emily. Alyne is also survived by her sister, Joe Faye Deshotels; her nephew, George (MaryAnna) Deshotels; and one niece Annette Eicke.

The family would like to thank the many friends and relatives that took such loving car of Alyne toward the end of her journey.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Matagorda Methodist Church or the Matagorda Cemetery Association.

There will be a memorial celebration of Alyne's life on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 2 p. m., at the Matagorda Methodist Church.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

Helen Rose Crockett, 99, of Bay City, Texas, passed away on May 3, 2012 in Bay City. She was born on September 27, 1912 in Skedee, Oklahoma to the late Leroy and Veda Rose Vance. She owned BrowseaBit and Jewels of Fashion in Deer Park. She and her husband owned Crocketts Fish House in Sargent.

Her husband, Preston Robert Crockett and a granddaughter, Jana LeAnne Crockett, preceded her in death. Helen is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Knox of Possum Kingdom, sons Robert Crockett and wife Joyce of Angleton, David Crockett and wife Gloria of Bay City, grandchildren Melonie K and husband Brian of Mississippi, Mike Meachum and wife Lisa of Austin, Cleve Meachum of Houston, Carole Sorenson and husband Ron of Lubbock, John Crockett and wife Cindy of Angleton, Linda Crockett of Angleton, and 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A time of visitation will be held Sunday, May 6 from 2 PM until 4 PM at Taylor Bros. Her funeral service will be held on Monday May 7, at 10:00 AM at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Chaplain Don Storey officiating. Interment will follow at the Matagorda Cemetery.

Irma “Winkie” Crow

Memorial services for Irma “Winkie” Crow, 64, of Houston will be held at 1 p. m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, Matagorda.

Miss Crow was born Nov. 22, 1921, and died July 18, 1986, in Houston.

She was a member of the Episcopal church.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ellen Williams of Houston and a brother, Frank Crow of Houston.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, 1600 Hillcroft, Houston.

Lila G. Crow

Mrs. Lila G. Crow, 80, of Houston and formerly a life-long resident of Matagorda, died July 11, 1976 at the Southeast Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was born Jan. 10, 1896 in Matagorda. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ellen Williams of Houston and Miss Irma “Winkie” Crow of Houston; one son, Frank H. Crow of Houston and two sisters, Mrs. Joe Guilbeau of Matagorda and Mrs. Irma Hustead of Bay City. Services will be held Tuesday, July 13 at 2 p. m. at the Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda. Burial will be in Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bolton Williams, Francis Williams, Jimbo Williams, Roy Traylor, Gene Lawhon and Sam Cheek. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

ANNA MARY CULVER

Anna Mary Culver, wife of Geo. D. Culver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Behmer, died at her home, at the Wadsworth Ranch, after a short illness. She was stricken with influenza which was followed by pneumonia. Despite all that could be done by physicians and the constant and loving care of her husband, kinspeople and many friends, she departed this life on October 28, at 5 a. m., leaving to mourn her death a devoted husband, a beautiful little daughter, her mother and father, two sisters and a host of friends.

Father Hudon, her pastor, was at her bedside and administered the last sacraments. Her funeral was in the Matagorda Cemetery in the family burial grounds. Many were the beautiful floral offerings, and notwithstanding the inclement weather, the funeral procession was very large.

Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones in their hour of profound sorrow.  A Friend.

Arthur S. Culver Jr.

Funeral services for Arthur S. Culver Jr., 70, of Matagorda were scheduled for 4 p. m. today at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Herb Willke officiating. Burial was to follow at Matagorda County.

Mr. Culver was born Nov. 20, 1920, to Arthur S. and Minnie Lillian Murdoch Culver Sr. in Matagorda and died July 1, 1991, at Citizen’s Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

A lifelong resident of Matagorda, he worked for the Matagorda Shell Co. and the Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. served in the Marines during World War II and the Korean conflict and was a member of the Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Olivia Culver of Houston; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray M. and LaVerne Culver of Matagorda; a nephew and his wife, Ray and Julie Culver Jr. of Selkirk Island; a niece and her husband, Sherry and L. R. Sprott of College Station; and her great-nieces, Haley and Hannah Sprott.

Pallbearers are Joe Smith, Walter Ritz, Wallace Nini, Mike Daughtery, Carl Anderson and George Deshotels.

Honorary pallbearers are George Holt and Gene Lawhon.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Catherine Seerden Culver

On October 25, 1863, on a farm a few miles southwest of Wadsworth, Catherine Seerden first saw the light of day and passed? from this life to after? life ____ at the Loos Hospital in Bay City on October 16, 1931 being 68 years, 11 months and twenty-one days of age.

In the neighborhood in which she was born, she grew to young womanhood and June 12, 1884 was united in marriage to Mr. John A. Culver, a young man born and reared in Matagorda.

The young people established a ____ home of their own not far from the home of the bride’s parent, where they lived for 47 years.

To this union were born seven sons and two daughters, John F., George, Harry, Clara, Henry, who died at the _____, Ida, Frank, Walter and David. John F., Harry and Ida, who is now Mrs. Will Doss, Jr., are residents of Wadsworth; George lives a few miles east, Clara, who is Mrs. Tom Berthelson is living near Alvin, Walter in Houston and Frank and David are at home with their father.

All were present at the funeral services.

Besides her husband and children, Mrs. Culver is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lidwell of Alice and Mrs. W. H. Doss of this place, three brothers, J. J., Henry and W. V. Seerden, also seventeen grandchildren.

Mrs. Culver was a kind and loving wife and mother, and a kind and loving wife and mother, and will be greatly missed, not only by her family, but by friends as well.

Funeral services were held by her pastor, Reverend Duda of Bay City, in the Catholic Church in Wadsworth, burial ____ was in charge of Taylor Brothers of Bay City, taking place at Matagorda Cemetery, her six sons served as pallbearers. The sympathy of the many friends of the family goes out to them in their bereavement.

Mrs. J. A. Culver

Mrs. J. A. Culver, wife of J. A. Culver, of Wadsworth, who had been in the Loos hospital for treatment for trouble due to a fractured leg, died suddenly at about 8 o’clock on Friday night while talking to members of the family who had called to see her.

Mrs. Culver is survived by her husband and several children. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Wadsworth with burial in the Matagorda cemetery this afternoon under the direction of Taylor Brothers of this city.

Mrs. Culver was 68 years of age and one of the county’s residents.

John A. Culver, 93 Year Old Life Long Resident , Dies

Death marked the end of a long trail for another native of the county, John A. Culver of Wadsworth. Mr. Culver died Tuesday, February 10, at 6:55 p. m., at the Matagorda General Hospital.

He was 93 years of age. He was born in Matagorda when that port city then was a thriving city of Texas. He spent his entire life in Matagorda County where he was engaged in farming and ranching until his retirement several years ago.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church and the IOOF Lodge.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willie Doss of Wadsworth and Mrs. Clora Berthelsen of Dallas; three sons, David and Harry of Wadsworth and Walter and Houston.

Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Matagorda Episcopal Church with the Reverend Aubrey C. Maxted officiating. Interment will be in Matagorda Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Funeral Services For Eric George Culver Are Held Tuesday

Funeral services were held in Matagorda Tuesday afternoon for Eric George Culver, 55, of Bay City. Mr. Culver died Monday in a Galveston hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille, and a son, Eric N. of Bay City; his mother, Mrs. Lillie Culver, Matagorda; a sister, Mrs. Mary Mecklenberg, Newgulf; two brothers, Arthur S. and Ned W., both of Matagorda.

Eric George Culver Dies In Galveston Hospital Monday

Mr. Eric George Culver, 55, life long resident of Matagorda, died Monday, February 19, in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston following an illness of several weeks.

The son of the late George B. Culver, one of the pioneer families of Matagorda county. Eric George was born in Matagorda August 10th, 1886, and there he made his home the remainder of his life. There he made his friendships and life long associations that so closely knit together the people of that little seacoast town, both through adversities and through fair weather. He had made a host of close friends both in Matagorda and the rest of the county who join with the family in their bereavement.

Mr. Culver was engaged in the ranching business in the county for many years and also was operator of a grocery store.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Luclle Pannill Culver; one son, Eric Neal; his mother, Mrs. Lilly Culver; two brothers, Arthur and Ned of Matagorda and one sister, Mrs. Mary Culver Mecklenberg of Newgulf.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christ Church in Matagorda with burial in Matagorda Cemetery. The Rev. A. C. Maxted of the St. Marks Episcopal Church, officiated. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Ray Culver, James Lee Culver, H. W. Mecklenberg, Bill Mecklenberg, Clifford Ritz and Douglas Kain.
