Edward A. Duffy

Matagorda, Texas, December 30.—Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Duffy’s son, Edward A. Duffy, died at Galveston Sunday evening in the John Sealy Hospital. He has been ill ever since his release from an army camp in Georgia some months ago, and several days ago his condition became so alarming that his mother and sister took him to Galveston as a last resort for his restoration to health but the physicians there gave them no hope and the gradually grew worse until the end came. The attending physicians pronounced his malady as “Bright’s disease.”

The remains were brought home last night and will be buried from the family residence this afternoon, Rev. Mervin Pettit of Bay City conducting the funeral services.

Edward August Duffy was 33 years old, unmarried, and the eldest of four children.

Those surviving him are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Henry Dugat and Mrs. Clayton Watson and one brother, Rosser Duffy, besides quite a number of other relatives. He was born and raised in Matagorda and has never known any other home and he will be greatly missed by his loved ones and associates.

The sympathy of friends go out to this good family in their great bereavement.

John J. Duffy
Matagorda Citizen Buried Last Week

Mr. John J. Duffy passed away at his home in Matagorda, Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a. m.

Uncle Johnny as he was generally known to young and old has been in ill health for several years and his weakened condition and age could not withstand a severe heart attack.

He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Duffy and was born on Matagorda Peninsula on December 25, 1858. He was 84 years old when the end came.

In his younger days his trade was that of a carpenter and some of the oldest and best built homes and boats in Matagorda are examples of his workmanship.

On November 11, 1885, he was married to Miss Emma Nolte who passed away several years ago. Two daughters survive, Mrs. Henry Dugat and Mrs. Clayton Watson. Two sons, Eddie and Rosser passed away several years ago.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from his home at 4 o’clock and a sweet impressive service was held by Rev. E. J. Davis of the Methodist Church.

Relatives and friends from Bay City, Palacios, El Campo, and Newgulf were present to join a host of Matagorda friends in paying the last respects to this good father and citizen.

Pallbearers were E. P. Layton, Jim Miller, Robt. Taylor, Whitney Marques, Eric Culver and Henry Mahavier.

A. A. Duffy and Company had charge of the funeral.

Josephine Duffy

Matagorda, Texas, Jan. 31.—Mrs. P. J. Duffy, who died in Algiers, La., at 8 o’clock p. m. January 17, 1920, was laid to rest in the Matagorda Cemetery at 3 o’clock the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 20, Rev. Father Kerns, a Catholic divine of Bay City, officiating.

Mrs. Duffy, accompanied by Mr. Duffy and their daughter, Mrs. Whitney Marques, had gone to New Orleans for medical treatment and stopped in Algiers and was there only a few days when she contracted pneumonia and after a week’s illness passed away at the age of 62 years.

Mrs. Josephine Duffy was one of three daughters of Mr. Frank Nolte who died long years ago and Mrs. Verona Nolte.

She is survived by her husband, Mrs. Peter J. Duffy, one son, Frank Duffy, one daughter, Mrs. Whitney Marques, and a step-daughter, Mrs. J. E. Simons of Bay City; also her aged mother, two sisters, Mesdames, J. J. Duffy and Wm. O’Donell of this place, and a brother, Capt. Frank Nolte of Kingsville.

Mrs. Duffy was born, reared and married in Matagorda and with the exception of a few years in Rockport this has been their life long home, her husband also being a native Matagordian.

Their union has been a happy one with a dutiful son and sweet daughter to bless their home and she had many warm friends although of a very modest and retiring disposition; too, she was an immaculate housewife carrying out the plan that “cleanliness is next to godliness.” She was a consistent member of the Catholic faith and is now with those who sweetly abide with the Lord.

There were beautiful florals to cover the grave when all was over and with sad hearts the bereft ones returned to the motherless home to take up the broken threads of life again.

May He, who only can do so, comfort them!

Peter J. Duffy

Matagorda, Texas, Feb. 1.—Mr. Peter J. Duffy, highly respected, life-long resident of Matagorda, departed this life January 3, 1924, at the Gulf hospital after a brief illness.

Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Simons of Bay City and Mrs. Whitney Marques, and one son, Frank Duffy, the last two of this place; one brother, and one sister—J. J. Duffy, Matagorda, and Mrs. John Kemp of San Antonio.

Mr. Duffy was born July 15, 1851, was a kind and indulgent husband and father. He always led an exemplary life, ever doing right by his fellowman and if he had an enemy it is not known. He feared God and loved his neighbors, judging from his kindness toward them.

At 3 p. m. the following day of his demise Rev. W. W. Daup of Bay City officiated at the funeral which was conducted at the family residence and concluded at the cemetery. Despite the very inclement weather there was a very good procession and many pretty florals to cover the grave. Mr. Duffy was interred beside his wife who preceded him to the grave several years ago.

The many friends here of the family deeply sympathize with them in their great bereavement.

Those out of town attending the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Simons of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. Henderson Marquis of Houston.
