Mary Elizabeth Kain

Matagorda, Texas, June 8.—Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kain, wife of Thos. Kain Sr., departed this life at the family home at 3:30 p. m., Friday, June 1, 1923, after a prolonged and painful illness.

After being prepared for interment the remains were taken to the Methodist Church and watched over by friends until time for burial the following afternoon at 3 o’clock when Rev. G. T. Storey read the funeral services at the church. Sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends followed the hearse as it wound its way to the cemetery where the tired and emaciated body was lifted from it and consigned to its narrow bed that had been beautifully lined with evergreen and white. There was a profusion of lovely florals that were placed on the mound when the funeral rites were over.

Mrs. Kain was the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bruce, her father preceding her to the grave two years ago. She was born in Matagorda, September 19, 1869, and was reared here. She was married to Mr. Thomas Kain September 26, 1888, of which union there were twelve children, including three pair of twins, one pair having died in infancy and also a little son, Andrew. Those surviving are her husband, and six sons, all of this place: Bruce, George, Ivan, Tom, Lawrence and Douglas, three daughters, Mrs. Berglund of El Campo, Mrs. Harold Swagerty and Miss Tassie Elizabeth Kain of this place, and three grandchildren; also Mrs. Kain’s mother, Mrs. Mary Bruce, three sisters, Mrs. G. B. Culver, Mrs. J. B. Hawkins, Matagorda; Mrs. M. J. Funk, San Marcos; two brothers, Chas. Bruce of Matagorda and Eugene Bruce of Palacios.

Mrs. Kain united with the Presbyterian Church in 1912 and showed her deep interest by always being promptly on hand for church services. She will be sadly missed in her home as a faithful wife and devoted mother and she leaves a monument of strength and purity in her sons and daughters who loved her fondly in this life and who will ever cherish her memory now that she has “gone on” to that better life. They have the deep sympathy of their friends in this community and may a wise and heavenly Father comfort and guide them in these sad hours of their great bereavement.
