W. H. Loverin

A correspondent at Matagorda writes us that Mr. Wm. H. Loverin, an old and highly esteemed resident of Caney, in Matagorda county, died of pneumonia on the 27th ult, and that while the community were expecting to witness the funeral rites, to be administered next day by Rev. Mr. Wright, Rector of the Episcopal Church of Matagorda, the assembly were shocked to hear that Mr. Wright had himself suddenly fallen down in a fit of apoplexy, while preparing to officiate in the mournful solemnities of his friend, and died instantaneously. Such, says the writer, was the astonishing effect of the mortuary intelligence on the community, that the ordinary routine of business was suspended, and the stores closed for the day.

Baines Ludington
Heroic Efforts Of His Brother Fails To Save Bitt Ludington

A shrimping boat exploded Tuesday evening, causing the death of one Negro despite the heroic efforts of his brother to save him.

According to Mrs. H. M. Gottschalk, our Matagorda correspondent, the boat exploded while shrimping. Bitt Ludington, she stated, was below at the time and his clothing caught fire.

His brother, Sammy, threw a life preserver on Bitt and himself, tied Bitt to him and swam nearly 10 miles to shore.

Mrs. Gottschalk reported that Bitt was dead upon arrival.
