Frank Phillips’ Body Identified At Olivia Point

The body of Frank Phillips, 43-year-old Houstonian missing since last Dec. 29 when his boat overturned in Matagorda bay, was found Saturday morning on the beach at Olivia Point, near Oyster Lake, 10 miles southeast of Palacios.

The body was found by Anton Riha, El Campo fisherman. It had been on the beach for about two weeks, said W. T. Cox, justice of the peace in Bay City, who returned an inquest verdict of accidental drowning.

Five civil air patrol planes and boats of the Coast Guard had conducted an intensive search for Phillips for days after he was swept away from two companions in the choppy bay waters.

At Water’s Edge

Justice Cox said the body was found at the water’s edge, partly hidden by driftwood.

Walter C. Gosling Jr., brother-in-law of the dead man, and who, with another Houstonian, survived the boating accident, drove to Bay City Saturday night and confirmed identification.

Justice Cox said the body was fully dressed and in the pockets were $4 in cash and a bill fold containing a pay check of the Southwestern Bell Telephone company for whom Phillips worked, a social security card, driver’s license and other papers.

Riha, after finding the body, went to Blessing and notified Gillie McClude, Wharton county deputy sheriff, who in turn called Zeke Noble, Matagorda county deputy sheriff. The officers with Justice Cox, C. H. DeWolfe, liquor control officer, Savage Cartwright and Stewart Savage, Matagorda county ranchers, all went to the scene.

After attempting unsuccessfully to reach the spot with a borrowed truck, they obtained a boat from Gus Benedict of Bay City. Savage and Benedict rowed to the beach and took the body out by boat.

The body was taken to the Taylor Brothers funeral home in Bay City.

It was found one and a quarter miles south of the bridge which crosses the entrance to Oyster lake and was some five or six miles from the scene of the boat accident.

Phillips, who lived at 4301 Mt. Vernon, Montrose addition, was on a duck hunting trip with companions on Sunday, Dec. 29. Phillips, with his brother-in-law, Walter C. Gosling Jr. of 2715 Centenary, West University Place, and Curtis G. Buettner of 7215 Navigation, Magnolia Park area, shoved off from the Intracoastal canal in an army-type storm craft, headed for Phillips’ ranch on Matagorda peninsula.

Boat Struck Log

At the mouth of the canal, the boat ran into choppy water. Then it struck a log, capsizing and hurling the men into the water. Buettner was pinned under the boat. Gosling went to his aid and freed him.

Then Gosling noticed that Phillips had drifted away from the boat in the strong current. He and Buettner tossed two life preservers to Phillips. Gosling yelled to him to leave a life preserver on the beach as a marker when he reached shore. The current swirled Phillips out of sight.

Gosling and Buettner clung to the overturned boat four hours before they were rescued by a passing fishing boat.

Phillips was born and reared in Matagorda county. He was a member of Cade Rothwell Lodge No. 1151 A. F. & A. M., and Arabia Temple of Houston.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Virginia Phillips; five sisters, Mrs. Gosling, Mrs. J. J. Bellew, Mrs. H. E. Allcorn, and Mrs. J. M. Brooks, all of Houston, and Mrs. Jack Phillips of Bishop; and two brothers, W. S. Phillips of Brenham and W. J. Phillips of Houston.

An Episcopal funeral service will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Taylor Brothers funeral home in Bay City. Burial will be in the Matagorda cemetery and Masonic rites will be conducted at the grave.

John A. Phillips

When J. A. Phillips passed “over the river” last Monday evening the name of that family of Phillips passed into obscurity.

He was a descendant of the third generation of pioneer families of this section of this country and although the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Phillips, he was the last to go.

Both his parents preceded him to the grave several years ago. He is survived by four sisters: Mrs. J. D. Moore of Bay City, Mrs. Harold Inglehart, Mrs. Chas. Williams and Mrs. Elizabeth Pennington of Matagorda; seven nephews, four nieces and three grand-nieces. He was a member of the Episcopal faith and had lots of warm friends; if he had an enemy it is not known. Rev. Paul Engle of Bay City conducted the funeral rites beginning at the home and concluding at the grave.

John A. Phillips, whom all his friends called “Jack” and the younger people, “Uncle Jack,” was born on Matagorda Peninsula, Dec. 26 1872 and departed this life Dec. 5, 1932, just in the shadow of his 60th birthday, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Inglehart, which residence was formerly the home of his parents. Here he spent the best years of his life, his parents moving here from the peninsula in the 80’s when he was a mere boy. Mr. Phillips had not been well for a long time but still able to mingle with his friends until several months ago when he began to fail rapidly yet he was always cheerful, always looking on the bright side and never gave up until the end was very near.

He suffered excruciating pain that he bore with great fortitude but God was merciful and a little while before his death he ceased to struggle, smiled and softly slipped into that last long sleep. The funeral cortege was composed of many sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends who saw him laid to rest amid lovely florals, near his parents whose graves he watched over with such tender care before he lost his health.

The pallbearers were his nephews, viz: Donald, Arthur and Milam “Doc” Moore of Bay City; John Pennington, Preston and C. P. Williams, Jr.

The many friends of the family sympathize with them in their great bereavement. “We know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even them that are called according to his purpose.” Rom. 8:28
