Violet Wilburn

Matagorda, Texas. Violet Wilburn of this place, wife of Mr. Johnson Wilburn, died at 5 o’clock Wednesday morning, April 21, 1920, at the Bay City hospital after an illness of nearly two weeks.

She was taken ill at Gulf where they were living temporarily, and after a few days when she grew no better, was removed to Bay City, where it was hoped she would soon be restored to health, but it was not to be and she now lies sleeping by the side of her father in the Matagorda Cemetery, who preceded her to the grave ten years ago.

The day of her death she was twenty-five years and twelve days old.

The remains were brought to Matagorda Wednesday afternoon and placed in the Methodist Church until 11 o’clock Thursday morning when Rev. Mr. Herndon of Bay City made a most beautiful talk on the short life of the departed loved one.

Her large circle of friends was manifested by the large cortege to the cemetery and the magnificent florals that were heaped upon the grave.

Mrs. Wilburn was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stonewall Ellis, was born and reared in Matagorda County and by her own wish received a business education in the Bay City Business College, fitting herself for her chosen life’s work which she followed up until the time of her illness. While in this capacity at Houston she met Mr. Wilburn and they were happily married five years ago and resided in Houston until recently.

Only time can assuage the grief of those left sorrowing here for she was a faithful wife, a dutiful daughter and a loving sister—she was in deed and in truth a friend to all, an enemy to none and will be greatly missed by all who knew her for a long, long time.

Surviving her beside her mother and husband are four brothers—Allen, Melton and Robert Ellis of this place, Clyde Ellis of Houston, and three sisters—Misses Annie Ruth, Elizabeth and Willie Lou Ellis of this place.

May the judge of all the earth in His tender mercies guide the bereft ones in paths of righteousness, and when they, too, shall have to lay down the burdens of this life and “cross the bar” may they be reunited with those “whom they have loved long since, and lost awhile.”
