Preservation Month Awards Presented

The Matagorda County Historical Commission celebrated Texas Preservation Month and History Appreciation at the May 14th meeting at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in the Bell Bottom Community.

The Eastview Cemetery Association members were recognized for diligent work in restoring and preserving the markers in Eastview Cemetery located on Golden Avenue in Bay City. The sections have been cleaned and most of the markers have been reset on bases. Many years after placement, markers were leaning or had fallen over and now they are all easy to locate and read. Association members accepting the award were l to r, Harold Jones, Donnye Stone, Ona Lea Pierce  (Matagorda County Historical Commission Chairman), Judge Aaron C. Green and Christine Smith.

Also recognized was Israel Armstrong who has worked with her family to establish the Bell Bottom History House on CR 162. The descendants of the Steve Armstrong family conceived the idea of the Bell Bottom History House to preserve the heritage of the early settlers of the area. The house is the former residence of Alonia Fletcher-Keys.
