THE MATAGORDA COUNTY TRIBUNE, Thursday, March 17, 1932, Matagorda County, Texas

MRS. HANNAH LORETTA AIKIN.

Hannah Loretta Jewel was born on June 9, 1860 in Meigs County, Ohio and passed away at her home in Midfield, Texas, March 11, 1932 at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 2 days, after a short illness of four or five weeks. She was one of seven children, five girls and two boys that came to bless her father's home which was in Ohio and Illinois during her childhood.

Later the family moved to Kansas, where she was married to Knox Milligan Aikin, they started to build their home in Phillips County, Colo., at Holoyoke, living for a time at Loveland, Colo., during this time three boys and three girls came to complete their family circle.

In January, 1908, Mr. and Mrs. Aikin brought their family to Texas, they were true pioneers and drove through in covered wagons, camping by the way and enduring many hardships on this journey of some two months. They settled at last on a farm which adjoins the H. L. Brown farm on the Trespalacios River between Midfield and Blessing and across from the Hawley Church. Mr. Aikin was a school teacher as well as a farmer, he taught the first school that was ever taught at Midfield. After his health began to fail, he devoted his time to outdoor work raising fruit and vegetables, after a lingering illness during which time his devoted wife cared for him patiently, Mr. Aikin passed on in November 1916, the same year that their son Byron died. It was a coincidence that Byron Aikin passed on March 11, 1916 and that his mother went to join him sixteen years later to the day.

This double blow of losing both husband and grown son in the same year did not daunt this brave hearted mother, she moved to Midfield and bought her home, kept her children in school and raised them all carefully, she has lived in Midfield for fifteen years and has always taken an active part in church and school affairs. She has been president of the Woman's Missionary Society and of the Parent-Teachers' Association for several years. For many years she has been a Sunday School teacher either for the Bible class or a class of girls and was rarely ever missing at a church service either playing the piano or singing and was a true Christian who lived her religion in her daily life.

As a nurse she has gone into most of the homes of her friends and taken care of their sick. She loved babies and was a grandmother to many children other than her own.

She loved people, both old and young and spent much of her time in helping others less fortunate.

"I would rather wear out than rust out," she would say. It can truly be said of her life even as Paul said at the close of his life, "I have fought a good faith, I have finished the course, henceforth is laid up for me a crown of glory." There should be many stars in Hannah Aikin's crown, one for every kind deed.

The following relatives were present at her funeral which was held in the Methodist Church at Midfield of which she was a member at 2:00 p.m. March 13, 1932. Mr. Joe Aikins of Oakland, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Dean Aikin and family of Sinton, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Woodson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brhlik and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ves Hale and family of Midfield, these being the surviving children and Mr. Ralph Aikin of Midfield, a grandson and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Troutman of Midfield.

She was laid to rest in the old cemetery at Hawley beside her husband and son Byron who had gone on before her.

THE MATAGORDA COUNTY TRIBUNE, Thursday, March 24, 1932, Matagorda County, Texas

Death of K. M. Aiken

In the death of Knox M. Aiken of the Blessing Community, the county loses one of its best citizens. Mr. Aiken had been in bad health for some years; but kept up his farming operations on his home farm near Blessing until the 24th, when at work alone he was stricken and in 24 hours death came.

Rev. W. T. Nicholson conducted the funeral service, and interment was made in Hawley Cemetery.

From the Blessing-News report of the death, we learn that Mr. Aiken was born in Logan county, Ohio, August 30, 1859. He moved with his parents to Page county, Iowa, in the spring of 1860, where he resided until 1886, when he went to eastern Colorado and homesteaded on the unsettled prairie. He was married to Miss Hannah Jewell, June 3, 1899. To this union there was born Joseph Herold, now in Merced, Calif., William Byron, who died March 11, 1916, Eva Jewell, Alvin Dean, Violet Margaret and Olive Grace, who are yet with their mother. He united with the church in early life, and was an untiring worker in church and moral questions. Mr. Aiken was self sacrificing and hard working, knowing by actual experience, the struggle for a living.

In Memory of Veronica Allen
by Brian Gerabaldi on January 27, 2011

Veronica Martha Nolan Allen was born on April 18, 1927 in Bay City, Tx. to John and Ella Nolan. She had 9 brothers and sisters who all preceded her in death. Veronica attended school in Bay City and graduated from Bay City High School. She met and married the love of her life, George Coleman Allen. They lived in Fort Worth, Galveston and finally settled in Hitchcock, TX. They had four children: Barbara, Mary Jane, Beverley and George. Veronica was a dedicated homemaker and Mother to her family.

Veronica was interested in sewing and gardening. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was a member of the Elk’s Lodge. At the time of her death, she was a member of True Cross Catholic Church in Dickinson. Upon her last birthday, her children said this about her:

Our Mother was a wonderful stay at home Mom. She always kept a spotlessly clean house and served a hot dinner at the table every night, without the distraction of the television, even though it was in the same room. Mother sewed beautiful dresses for all of her girls and made sure we all knew how to sew. However, we all still knew George was her favorite. She attended every special event we were ever a part of and encouraged us to do what we were interested in doing as a career. Mother always told us that we could do anything we put our mind to do and family was her highest priority.”

As children often do, we did not always agree with the rules Mother and Daddy used to raise us, but we came to realize the wisdom of their words when we got out into the world on our own. Mother was right about most things she had taught us and we are glad we had the opportunity to tell her that she was right.”

We are grateful to have had such wonderful parents who made sure we knew about God’s love for us, honoring their commitment of marriage through good times and bad times, and stirred the fires of sibling love as we grew up. Thank you for raising us with wisdom and love.”
We love you Mother!

Veronica is survived by her daughter Barbara, married to David LeCompte, Mary Jane, married to Anthony Cargile, Beverley, married to Robin Clayton, and George Allen, married to Kathy. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Grandsons Abel Garibaldi, Brian Garibaldi, Charlie Cargile, Jim Cargile, Kevin Jurek, Joey Allen, and Nephews Roger Serafine and Aubrey Haynes.

Veronica spent her life in devotion to her husband and kids. She resided the last 6 years with her oldest daughter Barbara and her family. Barbara and her family were able to return that loving care and devotion during the time she lived with her.

Lord. May You support us all day long, till the shadows lengthen and evening falls and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done; then in Your mercy Lord, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at last. Amen.

R. F. Anderson Dies Suddenly Monday Afternoon
Justice of Peace Here Succumbs At Wheel of His Car

Mr. Robert Fulton Anderson, 76 years, 7 months and 8 days died suddenly Monday afternoon at 5:30 while driving his car home from his office. He evidently realized something was gravely wrong and must have been able to bring his car to a stop because when he was found the car was off to the side of the road on Second Street between Avenue F. and Avenue G. He had slumped over the steering wheel as if he had quietly gone to an everlasting sleep.

Judge Anderson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Lee Anderson, three daughters, Mrs. W. Y. Scott of Vann Horn, Texas, Mrs. D. A. Einkauf of Bay City and Mrs. Paul Seibenmann of San Antonio; three sons, Robert Lee, Edwin C., and Conrad R., all of Bay City and one brother, W. J. Anderson of Willis, Texas.

Funeral services, under the direction of Taylor Bros., will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the First Baptist Church with Reverend J. T. Draper officiating. Active pallbearers will be Roland Rugeley, M. L. Hale, H. A. Blaylock, Johnnie Harmer, Guy Barnett and J. A. Peters. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Judge Anderson, a resident of Bay City for 35 years, was formerly in the grocery business here. He served as precinct chairman for many years and was justice of the peace of this precinct at the time of his death. A member of the Baptist Church and a devout Christian, Mr. Anderson was active in affairs of the church and city and county. He was a man of strong convictions and the church influence he guardedly carried into his home and into the lives of his children. He was unselfish in his devotion to affairs of the church and city and took a decided interest in both, especially in his younger life.

His death is a distinct shock to the hundreds of friends he had closely formed in his associations in this section, as he had been enjoying unusual good health despite his near four score years.

The Tribune joins the great host of friends of the family in extending sympathy.
