Jerry Frank Babik, 85, of Bay City, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Matagorda Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born December 10, 1925, in Frydek, Texas, to Leopold and Francis Babik.

He was a production gauger and foreman for Superior Oil Company for 36 years. He served in the United States Army during WWII, received the Purple Heart, and is a lifetime member of the Bay City VFW Post 2438. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City and a member of the KJT.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Vale Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City from 7 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday with a rosary being recited at 8 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jeremy Miska, Garrett Miska, Stuart Babik, Frank Miska, Bill Frontz, Herb Wendel and Joe Ames.

Jerry is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Mildred Babik of Bay City; son, Daniel Babik and wife, Carol of Conroe; daughters, Linda Miska and husband Frank of West Columbia, Jeanette Frontz and husband Bill of Bay City; grandchildren, Jeremy Miska and wife Ree of West Columbia, Garrett Miska and wife Marissa of Angleton, Holly Babik of Massachusetts, and Stuart Babik of Wichita Falls; great-grandchildren, Sydney and Gracie Miska.

He is preceded in death by: his grandchildren, Leigh Anne and Wesley Frontz; parents; brothers, Leo and Cyrill and sister, Lillie.

Lucille Lee Baca, 86, of Bay City, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002. She was born April 21, 1916 in Markham, Texas to Amos and Sarah Huddleston Lee. She was a life long resident of Matagorda County and owner/operator of Lucille's Beauty Shop for 66 years.

She is survived by: daughter, Sue Baca of Bay City; sons, Lee Edward Baca and wife Susan of Bay City and Paul Allen Baca and wife, Linda Gale of Kingsville, Texas; sister, Dollie May Wilburn of Baytown, Blanche Gest of Friendswood, Melody Johnson of West Columbia, and Bettie Lou Cornelius of Bay City; sister-in-law Anita Lee of Alvin; five grandsons, Paul Baca Jr., Steven Lee Baca and his wife Lori, Lucian Baca, Lawrence Baca, and Jason Baca and numerous nieces and nephews and her loving care givers. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward, sister, Ruby Bell Harris, brother, Don Lee, and great granddaughter, Jolee Elizabeth Baca.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with her nephew, Don N. Lee, Jr., officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Edward F. Baca

Funeral services for Edward F. Baca, 78, of Bay City will be held 10 a. m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor James Brunner officiating. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery. Rosary will be said 6 p. m. Sunday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel.

Mr. Baca was born March 18, 1914 in Hillje to Frank W. and Albina Polansky Baca and he died March 11, 1993 at his home.

His family lived on a cotton farm, the beginning of a lifelong interest in agriculture. While he was in high school, Baca moved to Bay City in 1930. He played football for both the El Campo Ricebirds and the Bay City Black Cats.

He farmed cotton with his parents until 1936 and started farming rice in 1943. 1993 would have been his 50^th year to farm rice.

Baca worked for Skelly Oil-Getty Oil for 43 years, retiring in 1979. He was active in the Matagorda County Fair Association and 4-H for about 50 years.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and helped establish the school there.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Lucille Lee Baca of Bay City; a daughter, Elizabeth Sue Baca of Bay City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Edward and Susan Baca of Bay City and Paul Allen and Linda Gale of Kingsville; a sister, Lillie Dornak of El Campo; two brothers, Frank G. Baca of Markham and Victor L. Baca of Spokane, Wash.; five grandsons, Steven Lee Baca of San Antonio, Jason Edward Baca of Bay City, Paul Allen Baca of Victoria and Lawrence Edward Baca and Lucian Virgil Baca, both of College Station; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Michael Baca, Jeff Coney, Herff Cornelius, Tommy Dornak, Mack McLeod and Bob Reed. Honorary pallbearers are Archie Findley, Marvin Landry, Harold Lukefahr, John Lynch, Ralph Rennoldson and George Walker.

The Baca family requests that remembrances be made to Holy Cross School Foundation or the Matagorda County Fair Fund.

Laina E. Bagby, 18, of Bay City, died Sunday June 9, 2002 at College Station, Texas. She was born August 16, 1983 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Greg and Maxie “Scat” Cappaert Bagby. She was a member of the Family Worship Center, a Freshman at South West Texas University in San Marcos, Texas. She was a graduate of Bay City High School where she participated in the Girls Interact Club and The Drama Club. She was also active in the Family Worship Center Youth Group.

Laina is survived by: her parents, Greg and “Scat” Bagby of Bay City; sisters, Blair and Brooke Bagby both of Austin; paternal grandfather, Claude W. Bagby, Sr. of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and maternal grandmother; Lynn Cappaert also of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and by a niece, Raegan Bagby of Austin.

Funeral services will he held at 10 a.m. Wednesday June 12, 2002 at the Family Worship Center, with the Rev. Robert Rodriguez and the Rev. Joe Roach officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

EL CAMPO - Winston E. Baker Sr. of El Campo died Jan. 16, 2011, at the age of 73. He was born on April 12, 1937, in Matagorda County, to the late Woodrow and Ann Zimbro Baker. He was the safety director at B&B Services.

He is survived by his children, Terry Rutherford and husband Walter, Winston "Bubba" Baker Jr. and wife Patsy, Tina Graham and husband Les, and son Brad Baker and wife Melanie, and Dawn Smith, all of El Campo; grandchildren, Shawna Rutherford Wied and husband Kevin, the Rev. Shannon Rutherford, Taylor Graham, Shayla Smith, Zane and Jace Baker, Brittany and Bethany Baker; great-grandson, Kyle Wied; and brother, William A. "Bill" Baker of Livingston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Barbara Baker on Jan. 14, 2011.

Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers are Darrell Hoffer, Les Graham, Taylor Graham, Fred Imler, Mark Welfel, Bryce Skow, Shayla Smith, and Shawna Wied.

Funeral services for Howard Earl Baldwin, 84 of Temple, Tx. were held Oct. 18, 2010 at the Belton Nazarene Church with Pastor Adrian D. “Tommy” Davis officiating. Burial was at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple with military honors.

Mr. Baldwin was born Dec. 5, 1925 to Harold Reid and Alberta (Sealock) Baldwin in Palacios, Tx. He passed away Oct. 14, 2010.

He honorably served our country during World War II in the United States Army. On July 1, 1952, he married Mora Jane Lemay in Bethany, Oklahoma. He worked as a Pastor at Grace Church of Nazarene in Temple. He also worked as a counselor for T. E. C.

He is survived by his wife of Temple; daughters Crystal Baldwin of Temple, Coral Snider and husband Allan of Bethany, OK, Linda Baldwin and husband Randall Hassig of Temple, and Rhonda Wardlow and husband Terry of Temple; son Stanley Baldwin of Temple; brothers Carl Baldwin of Palacios, Joseph Baldwin of Portland, Tx., and James Baldwin of Somerville, Tx.; and 7 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Oliver and Donald; and sister Irene.

Grace L. Hayes Banks

Funeral services for Grace L. Hayes Banks, 83, of Bay City, a longtime educator in the area, will be held 11 a. m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery.

Visitation hours will be held until 9 p. m. today at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel and from 10 to 11 a. m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Banks was born May 8, 1908, to Isaac and Mary Hayes in Bay City and died March 12, 1992, at Avalon Place Nursing Home in Wharton.

She completed her early schooling at Paul Quinn School in Waco, which was a boarding school for young children at that time. She obtained her bachelor of arts degree in political science from Prairie View A&M University and earned her master’s degree in counseling from Texas Southern University in Houston. She furthered her studies at Colorado University.

Her 47 years of teaching included the Booker T. Washington-Hilliard High School and Bay City High School. During the Hilliard High School  years, she coached University Interscholastic League Debating and Declamation and also served as class sponsor for many years.

Professionally, Mrs. Banks was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, National Education Association, local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Olive Leaf Chapter 219, Order of the Eastern Star. She was on the board of directors for the Hilliard High Alumni Association Inc., was a charter member of the Daughters in Progress Club and was also one of the founders of the Hilliard High School Parent-Teacher Association.

The Hilliard High Alumni Association Inc. inducted her as the first member of the association’s Hall of Fame.

The lifelong Bay City resident was active in Bethel Baptist Church. She served as a church clerk, church school teacher, mission society teacher and educational director.

Survivors include her cousins, E. A. Johnson and his wife, Martha Sauceda Johnson of Philadelphia and William Smith Jr. of Denver, Colo.; one sister-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and kinship and many friends and countless students from 47 years of teaching.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and her husband, James A. Banks, who died in 1976.

Pallbearers will be Clarence Brown, Horace Davis, Harry Sauceda, Nelson Smith, R. A. Wiley and Kenneth Young.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dewitt Alliniece, Willis Hayes, E. A. Johnson, William Smith Jr., James White, the Bethel Baptist Church deacons and the Hilliard High Alumni Association Inc.

Alvin Leon Bannert
(October 31, 1926 - November 28, 2011)

Alvin Leon Bannert, 85, passed away November 28, 2011. He was born October 31, 1926 in Hallettsville, TX to Adolph German Bannert & Mary Pauline Slanina Bannert. He was married 48 years to Mary Ellen Peterson Bannert.

Our dad joins his parents, wife, brothers Adolph Henry Bannert & Leon Bannert, daughter Ellen Bannert Venglar, grandchildren Sheila Linette Carter, Chad Anthony Rogers, Christopher Allen Rogers, Justin Bannert & Joseph Hadley.

Dad’s proud legacy includes Korean War Veteran RA 18 307 582 Corporal with merit U EMB, Korean service medal, 1-O/S Bar with 3 Bronze Stars - Korea. He was a member & Quarter-Master of VFW Post 2467 in Palacios. He retired from Alcoa where he had been a millwright.

Beulah Jenkins Barber

Funeral services for Beulah Jenkins Barber, 83, of El Cajon, Calif., (formerly of Bay City), are scheduled for 11 a. m. Friday, Feb. 17, 1995, at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel of Bay City with the Rev. James Roberson officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Mrs. Barber was born March 7, 1911, in Bay City to Norman Lee Jenkins Sr. and Hester Ann Allen-Jenkins and died Feb. 5, 1995, in El Cajon, Calif.

She was a member of the Baptist church and a self-employed beautician in El Cajon, Calif.

Survivors include a daughter, Loretta Barber Boone; one grandson, Johnnie R. Cleveland; a sister, Delcenia Caldwell of Houston; three other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; 13 nieces, two nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennie Barber; five sisters and six brothers.

AGNES HOLMES BARKER

Graveside services for Agnes Holmes Barker, 91, of Austin, Tx., were held July 20, 2012 at Live Oak Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Manchaca United Methodist Church.

Agnes was born in Palacios, Tx. to Burrel and Frances Holmes. She passed away July 17, 2012.

She was one of the five “Beautiful Holmes Girls.”

Agnes moved to Austin where she met and married ND Barker. She later joined Capital National Bank where she became the first female Vice President. Upon retirement, Agnes and ND moved to Florence, Tx. and enjoyed ranching.

Agnes is survived by her daughter “Kiki” Dian Warden and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Julie Franki, Mark Warden, and Kimberly Stein; three great-grandchildren, Peter William Stein, III, Elizabeth Anne Stein and Sophia Marie Franki.

Cleo Barkley, 74, of Houston, Texas died January 25, 2001 at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 29, 1926 in Bay City, Texas to the late Huelen Allen "Buck" and Cynthia Caroline "Callie" Blaylock.

Mrs. Barkley retired from the Rice University library in 1983 and was a very active Volunteer at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

She was a member of and past president of the Braeburn Women's Club of Houston, and stayed active until the final three weeks of her life playing bridge, reading, and enjoying being with friends and family. Her dignity, strength, sweet spirit, and sense of humor will be remembered by all that knew her.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Dr. Charles A. Goolsbee of Rockport; brother and sister-in-law, Al and Nancy Blaylock of Dallas; grandson, Charles N. Goodsbee of Dallas; nephew, Layton Blaylock and wife of Anita of Austin; niece, Susan and her husband Dr. Paul Funk and their children Leeann and Layton all of Dallas; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Barkley Williams Piercy and her son Travis Williams both of Bay City; dear cousin and friend Helen Cates Neary of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty nine years Howard Norman Barkley, Jr., her son Howard Barkley, III and granddaughter Leighann Goosbee.

Funeral Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Harley Savage and the Rev. Nick Novak officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles N. Goolsbee, Donald Pollard, Dr. Bob Kelly, Dr. Fritz [Fred] Matthes, Dr. Gary Welch and John S. Simons. Margie "Granny Bee" Barlow

BAY CITY - Margie "Granny Bee" Barlow, 86, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 10, 2012. Granny Bee was born on March 31, 1926 in Nederland, Texas to the late Glenn Arthur & Catherine Mattie Hargraves Jones. She was a fun loving people person, always willing to help others. Granny Bee was an avid gardener, and especially loved her roses.

She is survived by her loving family; 2 daughters: Mae Borak & husband Felton of El Campo, and Kathy Johnston & husband Marty of Burleson; 12 grandchildren: David Barlow, Stephen Barlow, James W. Barlow, Christie Sharp, Toby J. Barlow, Billie Jo Popp, Belinda Villarreal, Felton Borak Jr., Tammy Brown, Michelle Gauthier, Ronald Brown Jr., and Jennifer Brown; 25 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; brother: Robert Jones & wife Debbie; and numerous nephews and nieces. Her parents, husband James Edgar Barlow, and son James H. "Toby" Barlow, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters preceded her in death.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Dale Baugus officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Linda Renaye Barnes

Funeral Services for Linda Renaye Barnes, 36, of Bay City, Texas, will be held Saturday November 25, 1995 at 1 p. m. at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City. Linda was born in Bay City, Texas January 9, 1959 to Frank Gray and Mattie Jean Sardinea, and died November 18, 1995 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton, Texas.

Linda attended Bay City High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Harambi Club, FHA, and the Distributive Education Club of America. A member of the band and also participation in all sports. She was the Freshman Class Favorite in 1974. She graduated in 1977, after High School she attended the Community College in Houston, Texas. Successfully completed Data Processing and Computer Training. She worked in the Computer field until her health failed.

Survivors include a daughter Shavondra Barnes of Bay City, Mother—Mattie Jean Barnes of Bay City, Father Frank Gray of Bay City, and adopted Father McKinley Barnes of Bay City, Texas. Grandmother—Viola Thompson of Bay City, and Celest Cook of Hungerford. Three grandchildren—Xavion Taylor, Vinshay Taylor and Justice Blackman of Bay City. Three Sisters—Talerya Barnes and Frances Gray of Bay City and Eretta Brown of Houston, Texas, and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be Friday afternoon until 7:30 p. m. Family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 p. m. in the Chapel at Green’s Mortuary.

Mary Alice Barnes

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Alice Barnes, age 59, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, June 10^th, at 2:00 p. m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. L. C. Cunningham, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p. m. at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel and Saturday from 1 til 2 p. m. at the church.

Mrs. Barnes was born January 17, 1936, in Bay City, to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown, and died June 5, 1995, at her residence.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Shirley (& Larry) Rutherford of Boling, and five sons, Charles Barnes, Calvin Barnes, Kenneth Barnes, Cliff Laws and Joe Laws, all of Bay City, and a niece and nephew she reared, Tonaka and Paul Batties Jr.

Also one sister, Mrs. Christine Johnson of Bay City, and four brothers, Johnnie L Batties, Paul Batties, Johnnie B. Batties, and Lawrence Batties, all of Bay City; her step-mother, Mrs. Beulah Brown of Dallas, three step-sisters, Mrs. Beulah B. Brown and Mrs. JoAnn Brown of Dallas, and Mrs. Daisy Anderson of Egypt. Also 3 grandchildren, Karey Barnes, Brandon Barnes, and Devin Dean; special family friends, Bill & Anna June McCormick of Bay City; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

EL CAMPO - Martha Tobola Barr, 98, a native of El Campo, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Mrs. Barr was born November 1, 1913 in El Campo, Tx to the late Joseph Tobola and Anna Bartos Tobola.
She was a loving and caring Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother, a homemaker and a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of El Campo.
Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her parent's and husband Roy Barr and brothers Herman Tobola, Joe Tobola, Leo Tobola, Logic Tobola, Edmund Tobola, William "Bill" Tobola; Sisters Olga Yockey and Alice Bodungen.

She is survived by three sons, Lloyd Barr and his wife Bonnie of Bay City, Kenneth and his wife Cindy of Port Lavaca and Larry and his wife Sherry of Sugarland, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday April 26, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church of El Campo. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers are her grandsons Darrell Barr, Brian Barr, Christopher Barr, great grandsons Michael Barr, Alan Tucker and Larry Cerny.

PORT LAVACA - Roberta Grace Peterson Barrier, 78, of Port Lavaca, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2011, at the age of 78 surrounded by family. She was born May 2, 1932, in Olivia, to Ola Mae Huddleston Peterson and the late Oscar Alvin Peterson.

She graduated as valedictorian from Palacios High School in 1949. She began her career at Bauer Smith Dredging Company and spent several years at First State Bank and Trust Company where she forged many friendships that were to last a lifetime. She left the bank to raise her family before returning to work in the 1980s at Formosa Plastics Corporation before retiring from STP Nuclear Plant as a cost controller.
She was admired and respected by all who knew her and was a positive influence to many of the young men and women she had the opportunity to work with through the years. She was a faithful member of the Port Lavaca Church of Christ, finding tremendous joy in service to others. She was also a member of the Calhoun County Quilt Guild where she was able to share her love for heirloom sewing. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched and example instilled in others. Her greatest desire was for her family to be faithful to the Lord and glorify Him throughout their lives.
She is survived by her mother; daughter, Starla Robin Barrier Mehaffey; sons, David Earl Barrier and Daniel Wayne Barrier; brother, Robert Marvin Peterson; grandchildren, Jonathan Barrier, Eric Barrier, Garrett Barrier, Austin Cox, McKenna Cox and Jessica Barrier; and one great-grandchild.

She spent the last four months of her life in Utah with Starla and her family and visiting specialists at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. She enjoyed every minute of her visit, but was ready to return home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Earl "Sonny" Barrier; father; and brother, David Alvin Peterson.

Visitation will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 2:30 p.m., at the Port Lavaca Church of Christ, Shan Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Olivia Cemetery. Lunch will be served at the church for friends and family.

Ernest F. Barron, 50, of Lane City, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2011, at Houston Hospice Hospital following an extended illness.

`He was born on January 5, 1961, in Wharton, Texas, a son of Sara Flores Barron and the late John S. Barron.

Ernest was raised in Lane City and attended Wharton School District. In June of 1983 he married Carmen Yerdon.

Ernest worked in the construction field and was also an electrician for many years. He was a member of Nazareth United Methodist Church in Bay City. He enjoyed working on cars, fishing, tending to his many animals, working in his yard and spending time with his family.

A visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. on Thursday evening November 3, 2011, at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011, at the Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Domingo Barron, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born July 19, 1944, in Wharton, to Ignacia Barron of Bay City and the late Emilio Sanchez Barron. He was an oil field laborer formerly employed by Burt Lease Service and a member of Nazareth United Methodist Church in Bay City.

Survivors: stepson, Ronnie "Rambo" Ortiz of Bay City; mother; sisters, Esperanza "Hope" Dominguez, Alice B. Lopez and Blanca Estella Gonzalez, all of Bay City and Maria Ramirez of Wharton; and brothers, Paul Barron of Victoria, Alex Barron of Kerrville and Daniel Caballero of Bay City.

Hudson “Cuter” Bates, Sr. went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Cuter was born October 2, 1936 in Bayou La Batre, Alabama to the late Rollie Robert & Anna Augusta Seaman Bates. Cuter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.

Hudson married Eunice Wilson Bates and they settled in Palacios, Texas to raise a family. He made his living on the waters of Matagorda Bay as a Fisherman/Shrimper for 56 years. He was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Marine Related Man of the year award in 1991 and in 1980, 81, 82 and 84 he was honored with the award for being the top producing boat on Matagorda Bay. His passions in life were his family, hunting, spending time at deer camp and serving the lord.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 ½ years, Eunice Wilson Bates; children Cheryle Todd, Rhonda Glenn, Hudson Bates, Jr. & wife Linda, Velenda Brune & husband Terry, Brian Bates, Sr. & wife Candice; 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren with one on the way; and brother Dexter “Tunce” Bates. Three brothers Jack, Tooker, & Hokey Bates all preceded him in death.

Johnny Lee Bearrick, 50, of Bay City, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at his residence following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born on November 8, 1961, in Wharton, Texas, the son of the late Joe Palmer Bearrick and Christine Marie Sanders Bearrick.

Mr. Bearrick was raised in the Wharton area and attended school in Boling. He was a carpenter by trade. Johnny enjoyed fishing, camping and being outdoors with his family. He was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by: his sister, Sharon Strickland and brother, Joe Bearrick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton with the Rev. Don Hurley officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Funeral services for Ms. Lou Nell Beasley, age 57, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, September 23, 1995, at 2 p. m., at the Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Ms. Beasley was born in Matagorda to Robert Beasley and Willie Martin Beasley, Friday, May 6, 1938, and died Saturday September 15, 1995, at Sweeny Community Hospital in Sweeny.

After the death of her mother, Willie Martin Beasley, April 28, 1945, Lou Nell, her three sisters and four brothers were reared by their aunt, Mrs. Ora Lee Anderson, who loved and cared for them as though they were her own.

Prior to the declining health which curtailed her activities, Lou Nell was a graduate of Hilliard High School in Bay City, and furthered her education at Mary Allen College in Crockett, Texas.

Survivors include two sons, Craig Beasley and Ira Schooler, both of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Anne Lee Schooler of Bay City, and one brother, Leroy Beasley of Shreveport, Louisiana. Also four aunts, Mrs. Emma Patterson, Mrs. Ora Lee Anderson (who reared her), Mrs. Elcena Gipson and Mrs. Lydia Gipson, all of Bay City, and three uncles, Louis Martin, Walter Martin and William Martin, all of Bay City. She also leaves one great-aunt, Mrs. Helen Edison of Bay City, five grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Willie Martin Beasley, three sons, Willie Ray Beasley, Robert Earl Beasley and Mark DeVille Beasley. Also two sisters, Wilma Monroe and Josephine Beasley, and three brothers, Van Roy Beasley, Charles Beasley and Johnnie Martin.

Mrs. Jessie Alice Bell, 92, of Bay City died Friday, April 2, 2004 in a Bay City hospital after a long fulfilling life. She was born on September 10, 1911 in Louise, the daughter of the late Leonard Barker and Dora Alice Allen Barker.

Mrs. Bell had been a resident of Bay City for the past two years and was a former long-time resident of Wharton. She was a member of Christ Is Life Church in Wharton and enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Besides her parents, her first husband, William Fred Greer, preceded her in death in 1948. She later married George Donald Bell in 1959 in Magnet, Texas and he preceded her in death on August 18, 1980. Two brothers, Robert and Floyd Barker and three sisters, Inez Waters, Lois Joines and Gertrude Bock also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Atherton officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Matthew Kendall Bell, 34, passed away quietly, surrounded by family, on July 1, 2012 from an extended illness. He was our beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle and friend.

Matthew was born May 26, 1978 in Ogden, UT to Kenneth Fredrickson Bell and Sheryl K Stone.

Matt attended schools in Layton, UT, including Layton High School, and graduating from Mountain High School. He earned an Associates Degree from Stevens Henager College in computer science. Working with computers was a passion for him in which he was highly skilled.

He is survived by his father Kenneth Bell (Ingrid) Lehi, UT; mother Sheryl Mills (Paul) Katy, TX; two sisters- Heather Duncan, Birmingham, Al; Wendi Curzon (Chris) San Antonio, TX; and brother Travis Bell, Houston, TX. He has three stepsisters and one stepbrother; nine nephews and two nieces. Matt is survived by grandparents Oran and Carla Stone; preceded in death by his grandparents, Devere and Beverly Bell.
 

Matthew, you are loved by many. Throughout your illness you showed courage, gratitude and kindness, sometimes comforting those who were caring for you. You will be greatly missed, but will remain in our hearts and thoughts always.

Elmer Billington went to be with his Lord on April 15, 2011.

Elmer was born on December 10, 1916, in Velasco, Texas, to the late Leroy Philip and Martha Jane Boring Billington.

He proudly served his country during WWII in the US Navy. He was a Merchant Marine engineer on the Sea Train Line, retiring in 1971. His occupation led him to travels around the world.

He was a dedicated family man, loving his wife of 69 years, his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He resided in Cedar Lane for 64 years and was a member of the Cedar Lane Baptist Church family.

He is survived by: his daughters, Christine Burwell, Martha Kolojaco and husband Robert, Linda Kennedy and husband Matt, Kay Atherton and husband Lloyd, and Carol LeMaster and husband Joe; by his son, Thomas Billington and wife Kelly; by 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Mary Lou Billington; a son, John Edmond Billington; and by 10 brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2011, at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Roach and the Rev. Maurice Morrow officiating.

Burial will follow at the Phair Cemetery in Brazoria County.

Lucy Lee Bingham
June 10, 1952 – June 8, 2012

Lucy Lee Bingham, age 59, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2012 following a short battle with lung cancer in her home in Cushing.

Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing and will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Cushing, Oklahoma with the Pastor Roger White officiating. Burial will follow the Fairlawn Cemetery, Cushing, Oklahoma.

The daughter of the late Lester Raymond Creel and Leila (Hutchinson) Creel, Lucy was born on June 10, 1952 in Iraan, Texas.

She was reared and educated in Lawton, Oklahoma graduating from Eisenhower High School with the class of 1970 and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree in business management from Florida State University.

In 1971 she entered into the United States Navy where she served until 1979. While in the Navy, Lucy met and married Owen Bingham who was also in the Navy and to this union three children, Misty, Amber, and Dustin were born.

The couple traveled extensively while in the Navy and lived in various places across the United States and the world including Florida, Maryland, and Cuba (where their three children were born) and Georgia and Scotland.

Lucy moved to Bay City, Texas in 1991 where she lived until 1999 when she moved to Cushing. While living in Cushing she worked for Enercon Services, which did remediation on the old Kerr McGee site in Cushing. Following her work with Enercon she traveled extensively while working as a health physics technician.

Lucy was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church and in her spare time she loved to work in her flower gardens, spend time with her dog, Max, and her cat, Sox, and frequent the casinos where she loved to play Mystic Mermaid slot machines.

Survivors include: her daughter, Amber Lee Bingham of Lenexa, Kansas; three grandchildren, Nevaeh Lee Bingham and her mother Tisha Mitchell, Devon Michael Bingham-Meek, and Bridgit Elizabeth Morganna Bartlett and her parents, Brian and Eileen Bartlett; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Lucy was preceded in death by: her son, Dustin Michael Leonard Bingham; one daughter, Misty Brandy Bingham; and one brother, Lamar Ray Creel.

Ryman Lee “Tex” Birdwell, 38, of Friendswood passed away March 31, 2012 after a lengthy battle with Diabetes (Brittle). He was born in Bay City, Texas on March 7, 1974. He graduated from Perry High School in Perry, GA and attended both Wharton County Jr. College and Alvin Community College. He worked as a computer technician and programmer.

Survivors include parents Susan and Mark Rosell of Friendswood; 2 sisters Priscilla Elizabeth Rosell of Lufkin, TX and Erica Annette Rosell of Friendswood; brother Frank N. James E. Birkner, 86, of Bay City, died June 9, 2001 at the Bay Villa Nursing Center in Bay City following a long illness. James was born in Manshack, Texas on August 8, 1914 to parents William Henry and Theresa Siebert Birkner but was a longtime resident of Bay City where he worked for many years as a mason and bricklayer.

He was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft workers for over 50 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City where he was a member of the Wesley Class Mens Sunday School.

He is survived by: a son and daughter-in-law, James T. and Janet I. Birkner of Bay City; sisters, Dollie Fritts of Austin and Florence McGuire of Woodville; a grandson, James Erick Birkner of Dallas; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at the Cedarvale Cemetery. Interment will follow at Cedarvale. Mrs. Birkner was born Aug. 1, 1915, to Robert Lee and Rosa Ella LeMay Porter in Town Creek, Ala. and died Oct. 9, 1991, at Matagorda General Hospital.

A resident of Bay City for 70 years, she married James E. Birkner Dec. 25, 1935. She was a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Birkner of Bay City; a son and daughter-in-law, James T. and Janet Birkner of Bay City; a sister, Rose Pulluam of Searcy, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

BAY CITY - Avis Radke Bissett, 90, of Bay City, died Jan. 27, 2004.

She was born Sept. 16, 1913, in Edgewood, to the late John Paul and Cora May Ballinger Radke. She was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors: daughter, Norma Kahla of Odessa; sons, Albert Bissett of Bay City, James Bissett of Fulshear, and John Bissett of Lovington, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Norman Gordon Bissett; sisters, Annie Watson, Opal Watson, and Lovie Radke; and brothers, Paul Radke and Earl Radke.

Ila Elizabeth Black, 84, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas died Thursday, May 17, 2001 at National Park Medical Center. She was born on April 5, 1918 in Lauderdale County, Miss., the daughter of Clyde Brown and Lossie Franklin Brown.

She was a freelance Anesthesiologist and a member of the Pilot Club of Baytown, Texas. She was a member of the Hot Springs Village Women's Club, volunteered at the front gate and taught the Turtles exercise group. She was a member of the Village United Methodist Church and moved to Hot Springs Village in 1983 from Baytown, Texas.

She is survived by: one son, Donald Guy Black of Missoula, Montana; one daughter, Carole Rae Black of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Guy Black whom she married on November 2, 1954, and eight brothers.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Village United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Jarrell officiating. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be in CedarVale Cemetery of Hot Springs Village.

Our “Mommy” Elizabeth Anne Vavra Blackwell died peacefully while surrounded by her children and grandchildren on July 17, 2012.

She was born September 19, 1914 in the Birch Community in Burleson County, Texas to the late Frank Vavra and Johnna Popek Vavra.

Her family was her entire life.

At the age of 65 she proudly achieved her GED from Bay City High School. In her later years she enjoyed travel with her sisters.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Julian W. Blackwell; infant son, Thomas Frank Blackwell; stepdaughter, Ruth Varga and grandson, Cole Watson.

Survivors include: daughters, Bettye Jo Lowry and husband Lacey, Minnie Waddell and husband Bobby and Susan Carr and husband Frank; son, Luther Wayne Blackwell and wife Patsy; stepson, Julian Blackwell and Wife Carol; sister, Alma McKissick; sisters-in-law, Wilma Vavra and Geneva Jensen; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mass was held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2012 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Greg Korenek officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

A memorial service for Frances A. Blomberg, 82, of Palacios, Tx., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios.

Mrs. Blomberg was born March 4, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minn. to the late Evelyn and Lester Comstock. She passed away Aug. 3, 2011.

She played piano professionally in Minneapolis and taught piano lessons in Palacios for many years.

She is survived by her son David Blomberg of Midfield, Tx., daughters Mary Beth Barker and husband Allen of Palacios, and Kathy Babbitt; grandchildren Erika Babbitt, Matthew Blomberg and wife Soo Hye, Adam Barker and Andrew Barker.

She was preceded in death by her husband Neil H. Blomberg who passed away Sept. 18, 1996.

Rockport - Melvin James Blum, 89, a resident of Rockport, since 1983, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007 at a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Bay City [Matagorda County, Texas], to John and Sarah Blum.

Raised in Bay City, he loved to hunt and fish all of his life. He served in the Army-Air Force during WWII. He was owner of Melvin J. Blum Music Company in Bay City from 1936 until 1976. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rockport and a life member of Philip H. Parker VFW Post 2438.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Virginia Blum in 2000. He is survived by his nephews, Dr. Charles M. Blum of Houston and John Blum of Jacksonville, Ore.; his nieces, Mollie Jean Richter of Houston and Joann Morris of Denver.

Visitation will be held from 1 - 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home, Rockport.

Virginia "Jennye" Blum, 79, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2000 in Aransas Pass, Texas. She has been a resident of Rockport since 1983 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockport. Prior to moving to Rockport, she had been a resident of Bay City, Texas.

She is survived by: her loving husband of 57 years, Melvin Blum of Rockport; two nephews, Dr. Charles M. Mr. Bonner was born Thursday, September 13, 1934, to Willie Bonner, Sr. and Johnnie Mae Fisher Bonner, in Bay City, and died Thursday, September 14, 1995, at his residence in Bay City.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Edna Tone (& Charles) and Mrs. Margaret Cooper (& Jeddie), all of Bay City. Also two brothers and sisters-in-law, L. V. Sanford (& Hattie) and John L. Bonner (& Diana), all of Bay City.

He also leaves one maternal aunt, Mrs. Addie Latham of Wharton, and one maternal uncle, M. C. Allen of Bay City. Also a host of nieces and nephews, their relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Bonner, December 16, 1940, his mother, Johnnie Mae Bonner, July 9, 1975, and his father, Willie Bonner, Sr., December 4, 1975. Also three sisters, Sharlett Bonner, August 22, 1987, Ruth Green, February 9, 1992, and Wilma Brooks, August 23, 1995.

Harry B. Brady, Jr., 78, of Bay City was called home on Saturday, June 30, 2001. He was born January 21, 1923 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas to the late Harry B. Brady, Sr. and Alberta Quillin Brady.

He graduated from Bay City High School in 1941 and spent one year at the University of Texas at Austin.

On July 18, 1942, he married Frances Davis, daughter of Pearl and Bill Davis, and in 1942 he entered the war in the Air Corp Medical Detachment serving as Medical Administrative Specialist. He was discharged in Rome, New York in 1945.

Mrs. Davis had a flower shop in the BayTex Hotel and Mr. Brady took ownership on January 21, 1946. The business was changed to Brady's Flowers and after three moves to larger facilities, it was sold to daughter Harriet Townsend and her husband. In 1999 it was sold to Charles Townsend.

Harry was active in FTD, where he held offices of Unit 9D Chairman and District Representative. He was active in Texas State Florist Association, and held several offices, including President in 1969.

Survivors include: his wife, Frances; daughters, Harriet Townsend and Barbara Strege, and husband Reid, all of Bay City; a son, Bill Brady and wife Beverly of Waldorf, MD.; grandchildren, Candace Seidel and husband Ralph, Robin Haring and husband, Bob, and Chris Townsend, all of Bay City, Sandy Carrier and husband Ricky, of Rayne, La., Barbie Lynn Kile of Friendswood, Bethany Brady and Bill Brady of Waldorf,
Md.; and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, James Brady and wife Theresa of Galveston and Joe Brady of Bay City.

James C. Brady, a prominent local attorney and businessman, passed from this life after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Oct. 20, 2003.

Services will be held at The Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church in Galveston at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 23, 2003 with Dr. Asbury Lenox officiating.

Visitation will be held at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2003.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Cedarvale Cemetery on Golden Avenue in Bay City, with Chaplain Melvin Brinkley officiating.

Born in Sherman, Texas on April 3, 1925, to Harry B. Brady Sr., and Alberta Quillen Brady, he was reared in Bay City. He graduated from Baylor University College of Law, Class of ’53, and started his practice of law in Galveston in August, 1953.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, Texas State Bar Association and Galveston County Bar Association. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He was a member of Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church and served as a Board Chair and was a member of the Permanent Endowment Fund. He was also a member of several local organizations, as well as a lifetime member of three different coffee klatches.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harry B. Brady Jr.

He is survived by: his wife of 51 years, Theresa LeTulle Brady; daughter, Margaret Brady Brinkley and son-in-law, Chaplain Melvin Brinkley; daughter, Martha Kaye Brady and granddaughters, Catherine (Katie) Brinkley and Elizabeth (Beth) Brinkley; a brother, Joseph D. Brady, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers are Calvin Padgett, Curtis Padgett, Mitchell Chuoke Jr., Joe Chuoke, George Sims, Royce Wood, Don Morgan and Mickey Palmer.

Honorary pallbearers are Mitchell Chuoke Sr., Andrew Z. Baker, Harry Decker, Manuel Corello, Robert Greig, Richard Cano, Bill Wyly, Harry Kaufhold, Maurizio Antonelli, Bruce Farmer and Fred Wurst; and all of his buddies from the coffee klatches.

According to him, his greatest accomplishment in life was his daughters and granddaughters, all of whom he treasured. He will long be remembered by his family and friends for his boundless energy and his wonderful sense of humor.

Michael Daniel Branson, 12, of Bay City, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. He was born January 18, 1988 in Wharton to Michael Robert and Susan Ellen McMahon Branson.

Ricky Lee Benn Brinkman, Sr.
Feb. 11, 1953 – July 14, 2012

Ricky Lee Benn Brinkman, Sr. was born at Dow Chemical Hospital Freeport, Texas, to Stanley Ralph Brinkman Sr. and Bernice Elaine Benn Brinkman. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1971.

On March 23, 1974, he married his wife of 38 years, Beatrus. He retired from the City of Bay City as the Assistant Director of Public Works and continued his career as Director of Public Works for the City of Richwood. When he wasn’t working he enjoyed spending every chance he could with his wife, children, family and friends and, most of all, his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his father; brother, Stanley Ralph Brinkman Jr.; and sister-in-law, Kathy Like Brinkman.

Survivors include: wife, Beatrus Brinkman of Bay City; daughter, Stephanie Garza (and Jerry) of Van Vleck; son, Ricky Brinkman Jr. (and Christy) of Gatesville; mother, Bernice Elaine Benn Brinkman of Somerville; sister, Gina Engelmann (and Dennis) of Caldwell; brothers, Randy Brinkman, Aldie Brinkman (and Alice), Sammy Brinkman (and Carol) all of Somerville; four grandsons, Joseph, Jonathan, and Jordan Garza and Ricky Lee Benn Brinkman III; one step-grandson, Eric Wise, and one step-granddaughter, Cassandra Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack Randall Brock, 83, of Naples, Texas, passed away on July 10, 2011, at an Omaha, Texas, nursing home.

He was born on April 1, 1928, to M. G. and Clyde Brock.

Jack graduated from Naples High School in 1945. He was a 50+ year member of the Belden Masonic Lodge in Naples, was a team roper, and an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

He served in the United States Navy and was a law enforcement officer in Columbus, Texas, and Bay City, Texas. He attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Marietta, Texas.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents.

Glenn Raymond Brooks passed away on February 17, 2011, at his home in Katy, Texas, at the age of 77.

Born on July 4, 1933, in Idabel, Oklahoma, he resided in Houston for nearly 50 years.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, William B. Brooks and Ruth Epperson Brooks; his brother, William E. Brooks; and his nephew Bill Brooks.

Glenn attended Bay City High School, class of 1951. He attended University of Houston before beginning a 40-plus year career in the natural gas measurement industry. Glenn served in the United States Marine Corps.

He married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Williams in 1954 and had recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Bertha Irene Robidoux Broughton, 91, long time resident of Bay City, died May 20, 2000 at the Matagorda House. Bertha, daughter of the late Phillip Fraizer and Essie Mae Henry Robidoux, was born Jan. 8, 1906 in Port Lavaca, Texas. Following her mother's death in her infancy, she was reared in foster care by the William Edward Bedford family of Matagorda, Texas. Bertha attended Southwestern University and taught in a country school for one year. She married Edward D. Broughton on March 23, 1935. They settled in Bay City in 1942 in a loving marriage of 49 years, until his death in 1984. She generously gave of her time and talents by serving her community in many local organizations; Eastern Star, Pink Ladies, and the First United Methodist Church. To her many friends and family she shared her loving concerns and kindness. She worked in banking for the City of Bay City, Gulf Coast Rice Farms and retired in 1971 after 15 years as tax assessor for the Bay City Independent School District.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Matherle and Wilbur Ray Spears of Clayton, Calif.; two grandchildren, Scott Byron Spears and wife Mette Frank of San Jose, Calif., and Sherri Lynn Gendron and husband Paul Stephen of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Rena Broughton and Gladys Heiligbrodt both of Bay City; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

He was an army veteran of World War I, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 865 A. F. & A. M. in Bay City and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Donald M. Brown, 83, of Van Vleck, passed away February 26, 2002, at the Matagorda Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bay City. He was born in Springfield, Penn. on October 5, 1918 to parents Frank Forrest and Amanda Catherine Tate Brown.

He married Charlotte Marie Dessauer of June 2, 1942 in Media, PA. He worked for General Steel Castings during World War II making gun turrets. In 1945, he moved his family to Fort Worth to work for Convair Corp., later becoming General Dynamics where he worked on many missile and NASA projects. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 416 of Tarrant County in Ft. Worth and was a 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.

He is preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters and a great-grandchild, Lee Ann Ashley Moon.

He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Charlotte Marie Dessauer Brown of Van Vleck, daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Medardo Ramirez of Bay City and Burta and David McIntosh of Bay City, grandchildren, Donna Marie and Brent Elrod, Richard David and Ellen Ramirez, Cheryl Ann and James Moon, and Martin Strong as well as great-grandchildren, Rachael, Richard and Madelin Ramirez, LeiNyssa Middleton, Andrew William and Thomas Ryan Elrod, and Crystal Marie Strong-Moon.

LeROY ‘LEE’ BROWN

A Celebration of Life service for LeRoy “Lee” Brown, 78, of Orange, Tx. was held March 13, 2012, at Community Church in Orange. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Brown was born June 21, 1933, in Trenton, N.J. to LeRoy Phillips and Rose (Magyar) Brown. He went home to be with the Lord on March 9, 2012 in Beaumont., Tx.

He served honorably in the United States Navy, attended the University of Houston, and 50 years ago in 1962 he founded Brown Hearing Centers which continues to serve the hearing impaired community throughout Texas and Louisiana. An ordained minister of the Gospel, Mr. Brown was a faithful and active member of Community Church and was instrumental in helping establish several different ministries and organizations.

He founded Wisdom Bible Institute, was a member of Fellowship of Companies for Christ, World Ministry Fellowship and founding board member of Orange County Committee on Aging. In 2007, he was named the Orange County Senior Citizen of the Year. He will be remembered for many things including his ability to show others the love that God has for them. Lee was a very generous man who had the heart of a selfless giver and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, fisherman, and fisher of men.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy (Wickham) Brown of Orange; daughter, Belinda Escobedo and husband, Cesar of Edinburg, Tx.; daughter, Brenda Brown of Pharr, Tx.; daughter, Karlene Toohey and husband, Eddie of Orange; daughter, Kimi Cohenour and husband, Jimmy of Palacios, Tx.; daughter, Kelly Ann Scarborough and husband, Randy of Orange; daughter, Kristi Lee Herlacher and husband, Rick of Denton, Tx. and son, David Brown and wife, Sharon of Austin, Tx.. Lee is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roger Brown.

Sandra Loggins Brown, 68, beloved wife and mother went to be with our Lord and Savior on May 2, 2011.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Loggins, and infant son, Jerry D. Brown, Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry D. Brown; brother, Bobby (Jane) Loggins; daughters Cheryl (Billy) Alley and Laurie (Tim) Garner of Birmingham, AL; son, James (Melissa) Brown of Palacios; grandchildren Joey (Alexandria) Alley, Bethany (Tim) Rigg, Ashleigh (Brad) Davis, Candice Alley, Christian Garner, Eric Hatfield and Miranda Garner of Alabama and Christopher and Taylor Brown of Palacios; great-grandchildren, Jackson Trusty and Ally Davis; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jerry and Sandra lived in Palacios for several years in the 80’s. She attended First Baptist Church of Palacios at that time and made many long time friends in Palacios. She was a devoted servant to our Lord and taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and GAs through the years. She was involved with Women on Mission and was a member of Republic Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends.

Funeral services were held on May 4, 2011 with family, friends and pastor Brother Guy Moore officiating.

Mary Texanna Willburn Buckalew, 86, was born at Spearman, Hansford County, TX to David Hyron Willburn and Louisa R. Ward Willburn on April 5, 1921.

She was the fifth member of a family of thirteen children. We called her “Ann”. She married the late “Lee” Leroy Buckalew of Houston, Texas where they lived for many years. She was a retired secretary and bookkeeper and a member of the First Christian Church.

Ann served in the US Army during World War II. Her assignment was in Communications serving in North Africa and in Italy, including the Rome-Arno Campaign. She was awarded the Bronze Star and the WAAC Service Medal.

Ann was always a “favorite aunt” among her many nieces and nephews. She always had time for them and loved them so very much. Also, she was always sharing and giving with all her younger brothers and sisters who grew up around her.

Mary is survived by: her sisters, Dorothy Willburn and Flois Henrichsen of Bay City and Betty Jo Buchanan of Tennessee Colony, Texas; by her brothers, Glynn W. Willburn of Bay City and Blaine Henry of Sandia, Texas; and by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Buckalew; by her parents, David and Louisa Willburn; and by five brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will begin Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with Military Honors provided by VFW Post 2438 of Bay City.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to cancer research or to the charity of choice.

PALACIOS - Bertie Mae Buffaloe, 94, of Palacios, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011. She was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Mabank, to the late Sel A. Buffaloe and Ruth Beatrice McDonald Buffaloe. She was homemaker, a beautician, and a Baptist.

She is survived by her daughter, Judde Dominy Vardaman and husband David of Houston; granddaughter, Monica Herring and husband Cody of Tomball; and great-grandchildren, Will Herring, Addison Herring, and Megan Herring, all of Tomball.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jay C. Blomer; sister, Myrtle Faye Baughman; and brother, Rufus Buffaloe.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2011, at Palacios Cemetery, 12th Street, in Palacios.

Elisa G. “YaYa” Bullard, went to be with her Lord on Friday, July 13, 2012.

Elisa was born February 12, 1938 in Bay City, Texas to the late John and Isabelle Villela Garza.

Elisa was a retired cosmetologist after 40 plus years.

She was a loving wife, who also enjoyed cooking, sewing, and caring for her family and friends.

Preceding her in death were: brothers, Santino Magnia, Henry Magnia, Paul Magnia and sister, Julia Chavez.

Survived by: her loving husband of 38 years, Lonnie Bullard; sisters Lala Alvarado and husband Andrew, JoAnn Losoya and husband Joe,and Carol Flores and loving sister-in-laws, Sally Magnia, Adela Magnia and Lupe Magnia.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Bay City.

Rosary and funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2011 respectively at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with the Father Peter Yeboah-Amanfo presiding.

Clarence Thomas Bunk, 85, of Bay City, died December 25, 2004 at Matagorda General Hospital.

He was born September 24, 1919 in Wadsworth, Texas to the late John and Mary Herreth Bunk.

Clarence was a lifelong resident of the Bay City area, a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bay City Council No. 3070.

Survivors include: wife, Vada Bunk and son, Clarence Michael Bunk, both of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his sister, Theresa Bunk; and brothers, John, George, Henry and Frank Bunk.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

The funeral mass was at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Guerra officiating.

Pallbearers were James Engbrock, Ray Kacal, John Acosta, Harold Ottis, Tom Houston and Gilbert Saha.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Theresa Mae Bunk, 85, of Bay City died April 24, 2003 at the Legacy. She was born in Wadsworth, Texas on July 27, 1917, the only daughter of John and Mary Herreth Bunk, members of pioneering Matagorda County families. Mrs. Bunk was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a lifelong resident of Matagorda Co. She graduated from old Gulf High School and was a graduate of San Antonio Beauty College. She owned and operated Theresa’s Beauty Parlor in Bay City for many years.

She is survived by one brother and sisters-in-law: Clarence Thomas and Vada Bunk of Bay City and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers and sister-in-law: John Walter, Bertha Bunk, George Andrew, Helen Bunk, Henry Francis, Juanita Bunk, Frank James and Hattie Bunk.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, and the Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: James Allen, Chris Smith, Dr. John Bunk, Terrence Allen, Michael Bunk, and Henry Francis Bunk .

She was born Aug. 22, 1936, in Comesneil, Texas, to the late Clifford and Jamie Sullivan Conner.

Survivors include: husband, Tom B. Burchfield of Bay City; daughter, Lynda Ketron of Lafayette, La.; sister, Joyce Leggett of Lufkin; four grandchildren, Lindsay Garza, Allison Knight, Joseph Knight and Nicholas Stroup; two great-grandchildren, Leonardo and Luke Garza.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Katherine Lorena Burns, 62, of Lolita, Tx., passed away June 10, 2011. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Burns was born Dec. 16, 1948 to the late Clyde Marvin Holloway and Myrtle Irene Viets. She attended school in Palacios, Tx. and had worked at a waitress at Petersen’s Restaurant and a clerk at both Downtown Texaco and Covey’s Corner in Palacios.

She is survived by her husband Donald Burns; daughters Kristi Knebel and Kelli Curtis; son Steven Curtis; brother Gererad Holloway; and five grandchidlren.

Charlotte Ann Burrough
(July 25, 1939 - March 14, 2012)

On March 14, 2012 our Angel, Charlotte Ann Burrough was taken home to be with her heavenly father. Charlotte was born on July 25, 1939 in Beeville, Texas to the late Wiley and Zelda Blanche Woodward Stuart. Charlotte moved to Bay City in 1942, graduating from Bay City High School in 1958. She met the love of her life in 1955 when she was a sophomore. Charlotte attended Victoria Beauty College. Johnny & Charlotte were married on July 25, 1959. In 1976 they moved their family to Alaska and returned to Texas in 1991. Charlotte was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Charlotte was kind and truly genuine, always putting her family first.

She leaves her long time best friend & husband of 52 years Johnny Burrough, son, David Burrough of Van Vleck, daughter & son-in-law David & Terri Burrough Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, her 3 grandchildren & 4 great-grandchildren. Charlotte is pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers, Wiley Gene Stuart & Robert Stuart.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March 16, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Marylyn Kay McCroskey Busha
Sept. 28, 1942 – May 27, 2012

Marylyn Kay McCroskey Busha died unexpectedly Sunday, May 27, 2012.

Marylyn was born September 28, 1942 in Beaumont, Texas. She graduated from French High School in Beaumont and attended North Texas State University in Denton.

She married Donald Busha in 1973. They lived in Houston until 1976 when they moved to Bay City.

Marylyn was active as a board member of the Lower Colorado Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association. She was an avid amateur photographer and a member of the Art League of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Irvin and Dorothy Farrand Ludgate McCroskey.

She is survived by: her husband, Donald Austin Busha of Bay City; brother, Michael Randall McCroskey of Sugar Land, Texas; sister, Marsha Karen McCroskey Elrod of Cedar Creek, Texas; sons, Bob (Robert Darrell) Busha of Dallas and Donald Austin Busha, II, of Houston; daughters, Casey (Karen Elizabeth) Busha of Bay City and Marla Celeste Busha of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with the Rev. Dr. James E. Ely officiating. There will be a reception following the service.

Those wishing to send flowers can have them sent to Busha Boat Works in Bay City.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Matagorda County Women’s Crisis Center in Bay City and Friends of the Bay City Animal Shelter via local vet clinics.
