Lendon Dwight (Slim) Ballard was born and raised in Royce City, Texas. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and proudly served his country. He was a man of many talents and jobs, but the one he enjoyed most was working in the oil field. He was a man that if you were lucky enough to meet, you never forgot him. Riding motorcycles was his passion, he loved to feel the wind in his face. Hunting doves, quail and pheasants was a long time sport he enjoyed with his comrades. He will be missed by many. He was proud to be a 32˚ Mason Lodge #66 of Berryville, Ark. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Frank and Agnes; a baby sister; one daughter, Denise; and a son-in-law, Travis Riley. He is survived by: his wife of 48 years, Peggy (Jody); one brother, Bobby Charles and family; four sons, Michael, Greg, Dwight and James and their families; two daughters, Glenda and Donna and their families; one brother-in-law, Truman Boggs and family; and many, many friends. His pride and joy was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hudson "Bud" Levert Bates Jr. 54, went to be with his Heavenly Father at 1:15 pm on Monday, February 18,2013. He was born on August 26, 1958 in El Campo TX. to Hudson “Cuder” and Eunice E. Wilson Bates. Bud fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Bud graduated from Palacios High School. Growing up shrimping with his father, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps and began his own career in the shrimping industry. One of the most exciting days of his life was when he purchased his bay boat which was coincidentally named “Linda”. He absolutely loved shrimping and being on the water. Sports was one of Bud’s favorite pastimes. He was a true “Shark Fan” and always looked forward to Friday night football games. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Ramsey Bates. Bud was an amazing father to son Hudson Merle Bates, his wife Amanda, and a daughter Tess Elizabeth Bates all of Palacios He has two precious granddaughters – Alyssa Keely Bates of Victoria and Haislynne Jo Bates of Palacios. He is also survived by his mother, sisters Cheryl Todd, Rhonda Glenn, Velenda Brune, and a brother, Brian Bates. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Bud. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 20th from 5-7 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Services will be Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Serving as pallbearers are Allen Morrison, Jr., Brian Bates, Jr., W.C. Greenlaw, Garry Seaman, Greg Seaman, and Scott Kurtz. Laurence F. “Buck” Beard, 78, of Blessing was called home on Wednesday, December 19, 2012. He was born on January 11, 1934 in Turtle Bay, Matagorda County, Texas to the late John Lewis Beard & Edna D. Tweedle. Buck was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, and trapper. He loved John Wayne, Westerns, and old country music. He was an expert rifleman, and a life member of the NRA. Buck was loved by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He served his country in the aviation part of the U. S. Navy. Buck is survived by his loving wife: Elizabeth Tumlinson Beard; former wife: Rebecca Beard. age of 92. She was Born October 5, 1919 in Westoff, TX to the late
Frank Guzman and Justa Rodriguez Guzman. She left behind a daughter Elisia G. Vargas, son-in-law Rocendo I. Vargas, one son John H. Benavides, Sr., seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Another Saloon Victim Early last night Bay City was startled by two series of shots near the center of town. One proved to have come from Constable Baker’s pistol, and they were fired for the purpose of arresting the flight of a Negro who had stolen some goods at Klein’s. But he did not stop. An hour later, four more shots were heard, and these proved to have been fired in the Ruby saloon annex, formerly used as a restaurant but now used as a pool room. These shots were fired by Ed Lee, eldest son of Jno. E. Lee, and their object was Adolph Benedict, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Benedict. One shot penetrated Mr. Benedict’s abdomen and pierced a kidney, and another passed through his shoulder. Neither of the others struck him. Drs. Simons and Byars were hastily summoned and made the young man as comfortable as possible, and he was removed to the home of his parents, in the southwestern part of town, where he lingered till about 2 o’clock this afternoon, when he breathed his last. Immediately after the shooting, Ed. Lee was arrested and lodged in jail, and we understand that Linn, Holland & Austin have been retained for his defense. Both of these young men grew up in the community from childhood, and after they reached manhood ____, both frequented the saloons and learned to drink and ____ more or less. Both were young ___ boys, just the kind ___ ___; and nothing is more certain than that if they had grown up in a dry town, they would not have learned to drink and ___, and loaf around saloons. ___ it is equally certain that had there been no saloons in Bay City that night, there would have been no killing, and two families would not now be plunged into this gloom and trouble. We have not been able to obtain ___ ___ account of the cause of the trouble, we shall not at this time attempt to give the facts, but we shall do so later, if we ___ ___ obtaining them. Adolph Benedict was a member of two ___ orders and carried life ___ in both; namely, the ___ and the Modern Brothers of America, and it is ___ that the burial will take place under their auspices about 10? o’clock tomorrow morning. The relatives on both sides have our profound sympathy in their time of trouble. Daily Tribune?, September 17, 1904 A Large Funeral The funeral of Adolph Benedict on yesterday was one of the most largely attended ever seen in this city. The body was escorted to the Methodist church by the two lodges to which he belonged, and Rev. H. R. Kimbler delivered a brief funeral address. The long procession then re-formed and went to the cemetery, where Rev. Kimbler read the church burial service and the Woodmen interred the body according to the impressive ritual of that order. Daily Tribune?, September 19, 1904 The Killing of Adolph Benedict It was the intention of The Tribune to say nothing more about this most deplorable affair till the examining trial was held and the sworn testimony was taken down in writing. But the examining trial has been postponed till next Monday; and a large number of people insist that the following report of the affair sent to the Houston Post should not be permitted to stand unchallenged so long a time: Bay City, Texas, September 16.—Adolph Benedict was tonight shot and fatally wounded by Ed Lee in Costley’s billiard parlor. The wounded man is believed by the attending physician to have small chance for recovery. The two men had had a difficulty in front of a restaurant early in the evening, but friends had intervened and separated them. Mr. Benedict then entered the billiard parlor and was followed shortly after by Lee. It is stated that there was a further passage of words between the men and that Benedict drew a knife, but did not get at Lee to use it. Lee left the room and returned in a short time, when there was a renewal of the difficulty, sharp words being passed. Benedict advanced, with a drawn knife, when Lee shot him twice. The first bullet went through the right arm, shattering it and passing out through the shoulder. The second shot entered the abdomen about three inches below and to the right of the navel, and this wound is believed to be necessarily fatal. The shooting caused great excitement, as a prohibition campaign is now on, and it was generally understood that one of the parties to the shooting was an anti, while the other was a pro. However, it is stated that this matter had nothing whatever to do with the difficulty. Now, we are reliably informed that the above report was not sent in by the regular correspondent. …manager of the Anti-Prohibition campaign, and the most casual reading of it will reveal the why. “Restaurant,” “billiard parlor,” anything but a saloon. And “a Prohibition campaign was on.” He wanted to shield the saloon and make the Pros. Odious for bringing on the campaign. Now, eye-witnesses assure us of the following facts in the case: Adolph Benedict and Sam Franz came into town with County-Surveyor Carrington’s crew, about dark, and went into Burnell’s restaurant to get supper. After supper they proceeded to Cosley’s saloon, passing some words with Ed Lee en route. As Franz and Benedict were standing at the bar shaking for the drinks, Lee who was intoxicated came in and wanted to join them. They objected, and he became offended and used some violent language, but went away. After drinking, Franz and Benedict went back into the pool room, and presently Lee came in with a beer bottle and renewed the quarrel, but seeing a knife in Benedict’s hand, he again went away and returned the third time, when the shooting occurred As to whether Mr. Benedict then had a drawn knife, we leave it to the examining trial to reveal. We have no desire to prejudice the case either way. After Mr. Benedict had been shot down and the doctors were making their first examination of him as he lay on the floor, a gentleman who passed through the bar-room to see the injured man says he noticed a crowd lined up at the bar, shaking dice, clinking glasses and drinking, with a man supped to be dying just through an open door. The gentleman said that while this was going on a man came and stood in the partition door and looked first at the suffering man on the floor and then at the crowd at the bar, and said: “Well, I have always been an Anti, but I’m done with them now. If this wouldn’t appeal to a man’s heart, I don’t know what would.” In view of these facts, it strikes us that the manager of the Anti…centive, of no justification for wanting to smooth the matter over by the above report. Now, let nobody say that the Pros gloat over this awful tragedy—awful for both parties and both families involved. It is a sad fact that every good cause requires sacrifices; but it is a glorious truth that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” But Adolph Benedict was not a sacrifice to the cause of Prohibition. Rather was he a sacrifice to the Moloch of the open saloon.

Robert Bryan Bickham, 84, of Clute, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2012. He was born May 25, 1928, to Bryan and Anne Bickham in Van Vleck, Texas. He graduated from Bay City High School. He married Dolores Juanita White on August 31, 1954.
Robert was a proud member of the U.S. Navy and served his country
with distinction. Upon his discharge, he and Dolores settled in

Fred Charles Boepple Jr., 85, of Sattler, Texas passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012, in New Braunfels following a short illness. He was born December 11, 1926, at the home of his grandparents, the Mitchell Hotel in Ganado, to the late Fred and Golda Boepple. He grew up in Ganado and graduated high school from Allen Military Academy in Bryan. Following service to his country with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II, he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career, touching many lives at pharmacies in Lockhart, Ganado, Bay City, El Campo, Palacios, New Braunfels, Sattler and Seguin. He continued working until shortly before his death and was recognized by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for over 50 years of service to the profession. He had a passion for history, photography, stamps, railroads and model airplanes. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a good friend to all who knew him. Fred is survived by: his wife, Dawn Boepple; daughters, Charlotte Betts and husband Don of Richmond, Carol Malone and husband Walter of Arlington, Kathy Johnson and husband Garry of Richardson, and Cindy Bailey and husband David of Dallas; son, Fred Boepple III and wife Lisa of New Braunfels; and stepson, Dallas Nace of Cherokee, Iowa; sisters, Judy Liberda and Jane Clingingsmith, both of Ganado; and brother, Mitch Boepple and wife Molly of Ganado; granddaughters, Bridget Helmcamp and husband Rodney of Richmond, Suzanne Hagensick and husband Joel of Richmond, Kristin Aldred and husband Booth of Salt Lake City, Utah, Megan Naylor and husband Mark of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dani Boepple of Long Beach, California, Amanda Bailey of Dallas, Jamie Boepple of Orange, California, and Jenna Bailey of Dallas; grandsons, Brent and Justin Bailey, both of Dallas; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his first wife, Jean Walker Boepple; his parents; and brothers, Jack and Pat Boepple. Elsie A. Lowry
was born April 13, 1852 in McMinville, Tenn., and died at her home
in this city December 5, 1932. She was the daughter of Judge J. J.
Lowry, and when a small child came with her parents to Texas,
traveling by the ox-team way, locating in the northern part of the
State and her father taught one of the first schools in what is now
Denton, Texas. Later [the family] returned to Tennessee, their old
home and there on December 25, 1872, the subject of this sketch was
married to Milton Bonner. To this union was born five children,
three of whom survive, namely J. H. Bonner, of this city; L. S.
Bonner, of Chickasha, Okla., and Mrs. Osie Moore, of Corpus Christi. |

Claude was born on October 27, 1954 in Palacios, Texas to Floyd and Mattie Boultinghouse. He married Emily Auzston on May 18, 1973. He dedicated his life in service to Jehovah on June 2, 1974, and together they raised two sons in the knowledge of Jehovah. He worked as a carpenter for 37 years. He was always willing to perform any task asked of him by those in the congregation, whether it was the cleaning of the Kingdom Hall or at the assemblies. In his work, both as a minister and a carpenter, he touched the lives of many people, by whom he will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed by all. He is survived by: his wife, Emily; his sons, Ben and Micah; one brother, Roy; and four sisters, Frances, Margaret, Betty and Linda. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 917 N. Nichols, Bay City, Texas.

Alma Lou Boulton, 79, of Sargent passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was born in Loraine, Texas on July 11, 1933 to parents, Marvin and Ethel Prescott Robertson. She was a Homemaker and a long time resident of Sargent. She is survived by sons, Jaydee Dodson, Jim Bob Dodson and Frank Boulton, daughters, Jullie Lewis, Paula Beeman, Charlotte Crowley, and Cindy Grissom, a brother, Richard Robertson and a sister, Vida Gonzales. 19 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren also survive her. James Monroe Brannen, Jr. passed away October 10. 2012. He was born June 22, 1930 in Toltec, Arkansas to the late James Monroe and Norma Sims Brannen. He retired from Local 22 as an insulator. Following retirement he moved to Bay City where he worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart for the past 18 years. He is survived by his three children, Tina Cook, Karon Soulcheck, and James H. Brannen; his grandchildren Diana Joaquin, Christy Cook, Crystal Brannen, Dawn Romero, Jason Medellin, Christopher Nichols and Melissa Vasquez; great-grandchildren, Zoey and Macy Joaquin; and the “Olds Mans” best friends David Torrez, Sr., David Torrez, Jr. and Carlos Torrez. James (a.k.a. Pawpaw/”Old Man”) was a loving, caring father, grandfather and friend. He loved to hang out , have fun, tell stories and loved the ladies. Rev. Cassious Herman Brown, age 86, pastor of Mother Zion Baptist Church for the past 29 years, passed away at his home at 3003 LeTulle, Wednesday evening, July 30, 1958. Born in Sweet Home, Fayette county, Texas, in 1873, Rev. Brown received his education in country schools, acquiring a teacher’s certificate by attending summer normals. He taught school eleven years in the Fort Bend county schools. He was called into the ministry at the age of 30 years. Among churches which he has pastured besides Mother Zion, were Kendleton and Needville. He held at various times, several high offices in the church, and attended conferences pertaining to the church program in almost every state in the U. S. At the time of his death, Rev. Brown was Secretary of the General Convention of the colored Baptist Church in Texas. In 1936, the deceased was married to Rosalee Allen of Bay City, who is a member of the faculty of the Bay City public schools system. To this marriage were born three children, one son, Herman, who is a recent graduate of Prairie View College and two girls Ceretha and Carolyn. He has eleven living children by a previous marriage. Rev. Brown was a highly respected citizen in the community by white and colored alike. A tribute to his integrity, wisdom and high ideals is best expressed in a book published by A. W. If there were dissension, prejudice or strife, he lived above it in his sincere desire to serve where there was a common need. He has left his family a great heritage an example for good by the life he lived.”

Johnnie Sue Popek Bryant, 50, of Bay City passed from this world to be with her Lord and Savior on December 12, 2012. She was born October 10, 2012 in Bay City to Johnny Popek and Leona Shumate Popek. She was devoted to her family and her faith. She was a member of Abundant Life Church. She leaves behind her loving husband, Kenneth James Bryant; her best friend and devoted daughter Katherine Lynn Saldana & husband Ramiro of Bay City; loving son Johnathan Floyd Bryant & wife Kellie Johnson-Bryant of Wichita Falls, TX; sisters Pam Reis of Van Vleck, Connie Mechura of Lane City and Mary Popek of Bay City; 3 beautiful grandchildren, also known as Mimi’s girls, Kiley Faith Saldana, Kallie Grace Saldana and Alaina Yvonne Bryant and many nieces and nephews and in-laws. A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 4:00 PM Monday, December 17, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Greg McMullin officiating.

Milo Edward “Chief” Burge was born January 19, 1928 to Ollie Theodore Burge & Marguerite Letha Baldwin Burge. He passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012 in Bay City at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife Georgia Welch of Orland, CA; four daughters Margaret Burge Carlisle of Bay City, Marsha Burge Hoffman & husband Vernon of Moulton, TX, Mary Burge Rose & husband Duaine of Ethridge, TN & Kasta Burge Carson & husband Derrick of Houston; one son John Burge of Quinton, OK; 25 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jacqueline Lucia Burge; great granddaughter Alexis Camille McVey and sister June Chrestman. He and a friend were the first D. J.’s at the country music station in McAlister, OK in 1946. He was in several bands and he played the guitar, fiddle & steel guitar and loved to sing to his grandchildren. His dad was an old pipe liner and he worked construction jobs with him and that’s how he came to Old Ocean, TX to work at Phillips 66. He worked there from 1949-1962. He then became a crop duster until he was 60 years old. He did everything in life he ever wanted to do, and he did it his way. We loved him dearly. His wishes were to be cremated and his family will celebrate his life privately.

She was born Nov. 12, 1921 in Bay City to Thornton Francis Carr and Mildred Walker Carr. She was a lifelong resident of Bay City, a Bank Teller for twelve years with the First National Bank, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bay City. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jean Quirk of Angleton, by three sons, William Lloyd Burnell of Bay City, Thornton Drew Burnell of Sugar Land, and Thomas Francis Burnell of Bay City; by a sister, Lucille Roberts of Bay City; by a brother, Tony Carr of Palacios; by 14 grandchildren, and by one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lloyd Burnell and by a son, Robert Dean Burnell. Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1996 at the First United Methodist Church, Bay City, with Rev. Mike Toland, officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Pallbearers will be Wayne Head, Bill Roberts, Cecil Roberts, Ronnie Coker, Greg Coker Don Cole, Doug Murray, and Dennis Burt. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
