Samuel Olid Burford
Nov. 1, 1917 - May 28, 2007

Samuel Olid Burford, 89, of Cedar Lane, completed his life's journey here on earth on May 28, 2007.

He was born on November 1, 1917, in West Columbia, Texas, to F. C. and Daisy Bell Newton Burford - the first of six children.

He graduated from West Columbia High School and went to work in the oil fields.

He married Alma Whittlesey of Cedar Lane on May 31, 1941.

After 60 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on November 11, 2001.

After the birth of their only child, Candace, he left the oil fields and settled in Cedar Lane and obtained a job with the Phillips Petroleum Company in Old Ocean.

He worked his way up the corporate ladder, obtaining the position of maintenance supervisor until he retired after 30 years of service. However, he did not retire from working.

He pursued a career in drilling and repairing water wells.

Samuel was known as the man in Cedar Lane with the beautiful yard and the large vegetable garden. He loved sharing his vegetables with his neighbors and he continued working on water wells and gardening until age 84.

He was a man of many talents. During his life, he plumbed and wired for electricity three homes.

Cedar Lane Baptist Church was his church home from 1950 until death and he was proud to serve the Lord by plumbing the new church buildings in the 1950s.

His beloved daughter, Candace Brown and her husband Morris of Bay City, were his caretakers for the last five years of his life.

One beloved granddaughter, Samantha, gave him much joy.

She and her husband, Kyle Hudgins, now live in his home in Cedar Lane. Sydney Ann Hudgins, his beloved great-grandchild, shared the first year of her life with him.

Samuel also is survived by his siblings: brother, Jesse Burford and his wife Aleatha of Alvin, and their four children, Vicky Helms of Conroe, Matt Burford of Alvin, Mark Burford of San Diego, California, and Pat Burford of Alvin; sister, Elsie McCagg and her husband Elzie Lee of Baytown and their two sons, Bill McCagg of Baytown, and Ralph McCagg of Clear Lake; sister, Rhea White and her husband John "Dub" White of Lufkin, and their daughter, Paula Sullivan, also of Lufkin.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife of 60 years, and two sisters and their spouses, Dorothy Armstrong and her husband Robert of Damon, Ruby Eversole and her husband Calvin "Pud" of Needville, and a niece, Charlotte Smith of Baytown.

The surviving children of Dorothy and Ruth are Jimmie Allen Armstrong and Donna Kathryn Leisner of Damon, Margaret Bartsch of Katy, Betty Jean Hilton of Ganado, Charles Armstrong of Freeport, and Janis Anthony of Stafford.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Cedar Lane Baptist Church, with the Reverend Zach Nicholson officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers will be Tom Barrington, Butch Bevers, Phillip Bowie, Jimmy Grisham, Clyde Pray, Glen Robertson, Don Ross and Hollie Urban.

THE DAILY TRIBUNE, Wednesday, November 14, 2001

GOLIAD - James "Jimmy" Dean Burnett, 25, of Goliad, departed from this world to be with Our Lord on Monday, May 6, 2013. Although we know he is in the loving arms of his late great-grandmothers, Thelma White, Louise Burnett and Lucille Andrews; and grandparents, John W. and Bonnie J. Graff, he is greatly missed by those left behind.

He is survived by his adoring parents, Robert G. and Carol Ann Graff Burnett; loving brother, Robert J. Burnett; his uncles and aunts, Ricky and Keri Graff and Robert L. and Teenie Burnett; his fiancé, Chelsea Rubio; and the center of Jimmy's world, their son, James Dean Burnett Jr.

Jimmy was the epitome of a country boy. He loved fishing and hunting and was no stranger to hard work. He loved his family and his giving nature turned a "friend" into a "brother" instantly. We will miss the smile that lit up our world, the bear hugs that made us feel the love that came straight from his heart, but mostly we will miss the joy that came from being in the presence of our Jimmy.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on N. Commercial Street in Goliad. A funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Father Ralph Baidoo officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the James Dean Burnett scholarship fund at P.O. Box 145, Goliad, Texas, 77963.
