Adelaide Callaway

Miss Mary Adelaide Callaway, who had been ill for some time, passed away in a Houston hospital Friday, June 5. She was a daughter of the late Rev. J. A. Callaway, who lived in Palacios prior to his moving to Houston some years ago. She was a member of the Methodist Church and took an active part in all her church activities.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. May Myers Callaway, of Houston, four sisters, Mrs. C. Luther and Mrs. Walter Milam, of Palacios, Mrs. Walter Milam, of Palacios, Mrs. E. L. Perkins and Miss Jean Callaway of Houston, William H. Callaway, Baytown and Rev. James Callaway, Elysian Fields, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the drawing room of the Settegatst-Kopf Funeral Home with Rev. Irwin T. Andrews and Rev. Derwood L. Blackwell, officiating. Burial was made in the Forest Park cemetery. Active pallbearers were C. Luther, Walter Milam, E. L. Perkins, R. W. Callaway, Wm. H. Callaway and Rev. James Callaway.

Elias Garcia Cancino

CUERO - Elias Garcia Cancino, age 63, of Cuero, TX passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on May 26, 1952 to Francisco Hernandez Cancino and Irene Garcia Cancino.

Elias graduated from Palacios High School class of 1970 and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree at Hardin Simmons University in 1988. He was an English teacher.

Elias is survived by Daniel (Gladys) Cancino of Cuero, TX, Pedro (Sylvia) Cancino of Corpus Christi, TX, Alicia (Walter) Welnhofer of Elmwood Park, Illinois, Adan Cancino of Mathis, TX and Ruben (Aurora) Cancino of Lake Jackson, TX.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista Church, 726 N. State Hwy 359, Mathis, TX 78368.

Joseph J. Capak

Services for Joseph J. Capak, 68, of Palacios, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Matula officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Blessing.

A rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Capak was born Sept. 30, 1917, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Louis and Marie Sitka Capak and died Oct. 23, 1985, at his residence.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 649 in Blessing and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include five sisters, Stazie Svetlik of Houston, Agnes Morris and Lillian Smith, both of Point Comfort, Edith Koch of Palacios, and Mary Schomburg of El Campo; a brother, Louis Capak of Francitas; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Jerry Svetlik, Johnnie Morris, Marvin Capak, Raymond Koch, Hugh Capak and Charlie Schomburg.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.

Funeral Services Held in Palacios Church for Louis C. Capak

Funeral services for Louis Cyrel Capak, 68, retired Palacios farmer, were held Monday in the Palacios Catholic Church. Mr. Capak died Friday in an El Campo Hospital.

Burial was in the Blessing Catholic Cemetery with the Fathers Til and Bily officiating. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home directed.

Louis Capak

EDNA—Louis John Capak, 74, of Francitas, died Monday in an Edna hospital following a long illness.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Tuesday at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing, with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Capak was born June 19, 1914, in Hallettsville, and had lived in Jackson county for 62 years. He married Ruby Lee Capak in Edna, on Aug. 22, 1945. He was retired from Alcoa and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of Francitas Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, of Francitas; two sons, Hugh “Butch” Capak of Edna, and William Capak of Francitas; four sisters, Edith Koch of Palacios, Mary Schomburg of El Campo, Agnes Morris of Point Comfort, and Stacy Svetlik of Port Lavaca; and five grandchildren.

Raymond Capak

Raymond Capak, seven months old son of Mrs. Lily Capak, died Monday, January 13, 1936 at 6 p. m., after an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Blessing, Texas, Tuesday at 3:30 p. m., Father A. J. Wheeler officiating. Interment was made in the Blessing cemetery under the direction of A. A. Duffy and Co.

Ruby Lee Rose Capak

FRANCITAS ̶ Services for Ruby Lee Rose Capak, 80, of Francitas, who died Wednesday, will be 10 a.m. today at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Elvira Carrillo

Elvira Carrillo, 79, of Blessing passed away on January 14, 2015. She was born in Kennedy, Texas on June 22, 1935 to the late Natividad and Petra de la Cruz Longoria. Elvira was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Guadalupanos Group.

Survivors include her daughters Rebecca Carrillo of Blessing, Rachel Galvan of Markham, and Helen Carrillo of Blessing, sons A. John Carrillo of Blessing and Ray Carrillo of Bay City, 10 Grandchildren, 5 Great-Grandchildren, sister Emma Marie Reyes of Markham, brothers Natividad Longoria Jr. and Sylvester Longoria of Blessing and Adam Longoria and Johnny Longoria of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Carrillo and brother Gilbert Vasquez.

Visitation will begin on Friday January16, 2015 at 4:30 pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm at the church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 17, 2015 at 10 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with Rev. Peter Yeboah-Amanfo officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

Gustav A. Cavallin

On June 22, 1879, in Wayne, Kas., a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Christian Cavallin who was named Gustav Adolph, and with his parents, four brothers and two sisters, moved to Olivia, Texas, in 1892. Here is this new country he broke the land, which was to be his home for fifty years, and where he lived until his death on December 31, 1942. Preceding him in death were his mother in 1897, his father in 1933, and two brothers, one an infant in 1889 and Carl John in 1934.

Surviving are three brothers, Oscar, of Mississippi, Malcolm, of Palacios, Guy, of Olivia, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Peterson and Mrs. Otto Peterson of Olivia and a number of nieces and nephews.

The greater part of his life had been spent on the farm tilling the soil and caring for his Hereford cattle in which he took great pride. Atho not often seen at the community gatherings, yet a man has gone who will be missed and mourned for by a large circle of friends, for to many he had been a friend indeed.

For some time Mr. Cavallin had been in poor health and about a week before his death was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. Charles Peterson, where he passed away.

On the afternoon of January 1, 1943, his body, borne by two brothers and other kinsmen to the family burying ground where a great throng of friends had gathered to pay their last respects to a kind neighbor and friend. Services were conducted by Fred Conner assisted by Rev. G. L. Mann, both of Palacios.

Funeral Services Are Held Friday For Mrs. John Cepak

Funeral services were held Friday morning for Mrs. John Cepak, 30, a resident of Ashby. The arrangements were under the direction of Walker-Matchett Funeral Home.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, George Edward and Joseph; mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Vacek; five sisters, Mrs. Wilma Steiber, Mrs. Francis McKissick, Mrs. J. R. Sanders, Miss Marcella Vacek, and Miss Beatrice Vacek; five brothers, Robert, S. T. Jr., Louis, Jerome, and James.

Funeral services were held from the Blessing Catholic Church with Father Hanacek officiating. Burial was in the Blessing cemetery.

Gordon Chadwell

Gordon Chadwell of El Dorado Estates, Markham, Texas, passed away on September 5, 2000 at the age of 66. A funeral mass will be held in his honor at 10 a.m. at St. Peters Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas with burial on Friday, September 29, 2000.

Mr. Chadwell was born on May 12, 1934 in Woodsboro, Texas. He was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church in Markham and was retired from Shell Oil Company. He was also a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Lodge # 4307, Blessing, Texas.

Mr. Chadwell is survived by: mother, Velma Cowart Ham of Bay City; daughter, Rebecca Mariani of Whitestone, N. Y.; sons, Stan Chadwell of Markham, Sam Chadwell of Clearlake, Texas, John P. Chadwell of Bay City; brothers, William Ham of Bay City, and H. C. Ham of San Antonio; six grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

William Henry Chambless

William Henry Chambless, 46, formerly of Bay City, died April 26. He resided with his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Verne Paris of Pasadena. Other survivors are: Elizabeth de Cana, May Lloyd, Maimie Bond, Lily Bryant, Mildred Hand, Martha Moore, Columbia Bowman, Thelma Rose Wilson, Victor, James, LeRoy and George Chambless, and many friends and other relatives.

Freda Christine Clark

(February 15, 1936 - February 20, 2016)

Freda Christine Clark, 80, of Palacios passed away February 20, 2016. She was born February 15, 1936 in Trenton, New Jersey to the late Rudolph & Mildred Robbins Hillman.

Survivors include her daughter Beth Stephens & husband Wayne of Van Vleck; siblings Joan, Carol, Charles and Hanx; grandchildren Janet Durgin & husband Roger and John Thomas Purtee III; great grandchildren Skyleigh, Padence, Jaelyn and Ali-Kat along with a number of nieces, nephews and extended family in Palacios.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 11AM until 1PM Wednesday at the Palacios Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will follow at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Palacios Cemetery. William “Billy” Charles Clegg

5 November 1935 – 18 May 2016

HALLETTSVILLE--William “Billy” Charles Clegg, 80, of Hallettsville, passed away May 15, 2016. He was born on November 4, 1935 to Paul V. & Elizabeth Dittman Clegg Sr. in Fort Bend, Co. He married Bernice J. Denison on April 24, 1954 at Galveston Baptist Church (62 years). He was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Columbia. He was an avid hunter & fisher, and enjoyed visiting friends across the country.

Billy is survived by: his wife Bernice; 3 sons, Steven Clegg of Bay City, Douglas Clegg & wife Melissa of Van Vleck, and David Clegg & wife Dee of Bay City; brother Roy Clegg of Van Vleck; sister Barbara Ethridge & husband Jimmy of Clute; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Billy was preceded in death by: his parents; brother Paul Clegg Jr.; and 2 sisters, Ivy Brown and Elizabeth Hinkle.

Rebecca Marie Coe
April 27, 1949 - February 20, 2016

Rebecca Marie Coe passed away peacefully at Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bay City, Texas on February 20, 2016.

Becky was born on April 27, 1949, in Willard, Ohio, to Thomas and Evelyn Brown.

She attended Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1971 with a BA in history, and the University of Pittsburg, graduating with a Masters in Library Science in 1972.

She and her husband, James Coe (Jim) married in 1972, and spent two years as teachers in Australia. Later, the couple moved to Bay City, where Becky was a teacher and librarian at Bay City Junior High for thirty years.

Becky enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. She was a doting grandmother. She will be remembered for her kindness and her smile.

Her parents, Thomas and Evelyn Brown preceded Becky in death.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Emily Easley and husband Matt of Richmond, Texas; daughter, Ellen Rodkey and husband Adam of Bloomington, Indiana; brother Thomas Brown and wife Ella of Van Wert, Ohio; and grandsons, Max, Alex and Xavier Easley.

The family would like to thank M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Hospice, and Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their exceptional care for Becky.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to M.D. Anderson Cancer.

Leroy Collins
(April 29, 1923 - May 13, 2016)

Conrad Leroy Collins was born in Elgin, Texas on April 29, 1923 and passed away at his home in Bay City, Texas on May 13, 2016. Leroy was a member of First Baptist Church of Palacios, Texas and was an Alzafar Shrine. Leroy was a resident of Kerrville, Texas for over 70 years before moving to Bay City, Texas in 2005. He retired from the Kerrville Greyhound Bus Company after driving for over 45 years.

Leroy was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Doris Mallett Collins, his father, E. Roy Collins and mother, Nell Collins. He is survived by his brother Reg Collins of San Antonio, his son James Collins and his wife Lori Ann of Bay City, grandchildren Greg Collins and wife Toi of Friendswood, Texas, Kimberly Collins Melendez and husband Matt of Katy and Mark Collins of Bay City and great grandchildren Jackson, Micah and Tessa Collins of Friendswood, Texas.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6PM until 8PM Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, May 16, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with James Collins and Rev. Chris Webb officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing, Texas.

Doris May Collins
(November 10, 1924 - December 21, 2011)

Doris May Mallett Collins, 87, was born in Iola, Texas on November 10, 1924 and passed away in Bay City, Texas on December 21, 2011. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church of Palacios, and a member of the Eastern Star for 69 years. She had been a resident of Kerrville for 70 years, before moving to Bay City in 2005. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. The family and friends she leaves behind will truly miss her.

Doris was preceded in death by her father: Mark Mallett, mother: Bebe Cleveland Mallett, and brother: Edward Mallett. She is survived by her husband of 65 years: Leroy Collins of Bay City; son: James Collins & wife LoriAnn of Bay City; grandchildren: Greg Collins & wife Tori of Friendswood, Kimberly Collins of Bay City, and Mark Collins of Bay City; great grandchildren: Jackson, Mrah, and Tessa Collins all of Friendswood.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. The funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Friday, December 23, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with her son, Rev. James Collins, officiating. Grace Manka Cooke
January 29, 1926 - May 6, 2016

Grace Manka Cooke, 90, of San Antonio, died May 6, 2016, at her home is San Antonio, TX.

She was born to Joe F. Manka Sr. and Lucy Ploch Manka on January 29, 1926, in Panna Maria.

She graduated from Karnes City High School in 1945 and married Emmett Cooke August 21, 1945, on the U.S. Hornet. in San Francisco Bay. Her husband worked in the oil fields and they moved multi times.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rosalie Dzuik and Alice Merritt; and brother, Joe F. Manka Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Emmett Cooke of San Antonio; sonss James D. Cooke of Austin, Bobby L. Cooke of Portland, and Michael (Mary Beth) Cooke of Salado; sister, Loraine (Howard) Ponish of Uvalde; and grandchildren, Cameron, Elizabeth, Alexander, and Nicholas.

Visitation was held Monday, May 9, 2016, at 1 p.m., followed by a rosary at 2 p.m., at the Eckols Chapel in Kenedy, TX.

Interment was in the Kenedy Cemetery.

Harvey Douglas Craigen
May 31, 1944 - May 27, 2015

Harvey Douglas Craigen, 70, of Van Vleck, Texas, passed away in Houston on May 27, 2015.

He was born May 31, 1944, in Beaumont to Zede Douglas and Geneva Craigen.

Doug loved fishing, playing music and making snow cones for his grandkids, at the Sno Hut in Van Vleck.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at 2:30 p.m., at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia, Texas, with Bro. Chester Sassman officiating.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Perry Barber, Jack Henderson, Carl Burrell, Richard Krainer, Trey Solis and Kevin Kriegel.

Left to cherish his memory, are his wife, Leslie Craigen of Van Vleck; children, Laci Kriegel (Kevin) of Port Lavaca, Laurie Solis (Trey) of San Antonio, Steve Craigen (Mary) of Texarkana, Michael Craigen (Becky) of Michigan, and Crissy Toler (Torrey) of Florida; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dona Giblin (Gary) of Warren, Jean Craigen of Spring and Bebe Gullick of Van Vleck; and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Henderson (Jack) of Kenny and Donna Barber (Perry) of Cedar Lane.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Ron and Brett Craigen.

Legless Transient Dies Here Monday - Dan Crawford

Funeral services for Dan Crawford were scheduled at 2:30 PM today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, with The Rev. A. C. Maxted, Rector of the Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was to be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

No relatives or friends of the legless man have been located, authorities here reported. Crawford Monday morning had been picked up by police, after a call from a Bay City cafe. He was transferred to Matagorda General Hospital where he died about 3:30 PM Monday.
