Earls was born in Live Oak, Texas, Saturday, Sept. 13, 1930, to Horace Earls, and Lizzie Brown Earls, and passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Bay City, Texas, He was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church, and was employed for 42 years as a Lithographer with The Daily Tribune in Bay City. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mrs. Emma Johnson Earls, and his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Brown Earls, both of Bay City. Also five daughters and four sons-in-law, which includes the twins, Mrs. Linda Berry (& Ronnie) of Bay City, and Mrs. Brenda Alliniece (& Gary); also Mrs. Audrey Byrd (& Courtland), and Miss Orville Earls, all of Missouri City, and Mrs. Arva Thomas (& Gary) of Houston. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Pauline Earls Allen of Galveston, as well as seven grandchildren, Danna, Adrain, Courtland, Jr., Clevon, Shamira, Gary and Joseph. Also his mother-in-law, Mrs. Alja Johnson of Bay City, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and an extended family of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Earls, Sr., and two brothers, Horace Earls, Jr. and Billie Earls. Serving as active pallbearers are Roosevelt Allen, Donald Bratcher, Malachi Brown, Jr., Leroy Ellis, Kenneth Rutherford and Hewitt Wiggins. Honorary pallbearers will include Gary Alliniece, Ronnie Berry, Courtland Byrd, Lloyd Earls, Danna Earls, Gary Thomas and Robert Durgan. Arrangements with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mr. Edison was born Feb. 18, 1948, to Ivan and Elizabeth Fletcher Edison in Bay City and died May 7, 1991, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Bettie Jean Acker Elliott (Billie), of Seguin, Texas passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at her residence after a long fight with C.O.P.D. She was born in Sulpher Springs, Texas in September of 1929 to parents Esther Darden and Haskell Acker. She later moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. In August of 1944 she married George Elliott, Jr. in Bay City. They raised a family of four boys, David Lee, Larry Ray, Donald Wade, and Kenneth Dwayne. They were the light of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, 3 brothers-in-laws, one son, and one daughter-in-law. She is survived by her sister, Mary Jo Bone, her sons Larry (Ramona), Wade (Deane), and Kenneth (Annie). She leaves 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, 1 niece, 1 great-nephew, and 1 great niece. There will be no visitation but a graveside service will be held on Monday, April 23, at 1:00 PM at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, Texas. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please make donations to Hawley Cemetery. Bay City Funeral Home is in charge of her services.

She was born Oct. 3, 1934 in Palacios to the late Aurelio and Carmen Lopez Ellis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Markham, and a life-long resident of Matagorda County. She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Pete and Mary Ann Medina of Markham, Ernest and Connie Medina of Bay City, Gabriel Medina of Houston, and Johnnie Medina of Bay City; three daughters, JoAnn Alvarez of Bay City, Minnie Medina of Austin, and Melinda Melendez of Freeport; three sisters, Vidala Jalomo, and Emilia Zarate both of Bay City, and Lillie Robles of Houston; two brothers, Louis Longoria of Pasadena, and Jacinto Longoria, Jr. of Houston; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. Richard Encinas, longtime resident of Brazoria passed peacefully July 9, 2012 at the Palliative care unit of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Richard was widely known and respected as the caring evening charge nurse at Matagorda County Hospital. He will be missed by his many friends and patients. Mr. Encinas is survived by: his large and loving families and his devoted life partner of 36 years, Mr. Thomas Valliere. In accordance with his wishes, Richard will be interned in Alden, Michigan near his beloved Torch Lake. No services or viewings are scheduled. Funeral services of Bonny Joyce (Yonan) Engwer, 43, of Bay City, will be Monday, Feb. 23 at 2 p. m. at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery. Mrs. Engwer died at Matagorda Hospital on Friday, Feb. 20, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in San Angelo to Dolores (Schultz) and the late Richard Yonan. She taught English, French, reading and art at Van Vleck Junior High School. Her husband, David, teaches math and drives a bus at McAllister Junior High School in Bay City. Before moving to Bay City, the couple taught in Pecos, Crystal City and Comstock. Mrs. Engwer was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1990, but vowed to never give up fighting. Indeed, while doctors initially gave her only about six months to live, she clearly had other plans. She survived for almost eight years, thanks to a remarkable spirit that saw her through radiation treatment, chemotherapy, two surgeries, and many close calls. Her guiding philosophy was Winston Churchill’s famous “Never give in.” She was a lifelong artist who loved painting and sculpture. Much of her art during her illness reflecting the struggles of living with cancer, and she found comfort in the ability to express her pain artistically. She was particularly proud that one of her brain surgeons bought two of her pieces: an Adam and Eve sculpture and a papier mache fish. Another great love was motorcycling. Before she lost mobility because of her illness, Mrs. Engwer and her husband often rode together. Recently, in a successful effort to brighten her spirits, her brother and husband had a sidecar customized and attached to David’s BMW. Her cancer had kept her from taking long trips but in the sidecar Mrs. Engwer was able to again taste the thrill of motorcycling. It delighted her, and while riding she proudly waved to onlookers. She is survived by her husband, David and son, Joshua both of Bay City; her mother and stepfather, Dolores and Vernon Jones of San Angelo; four sisters, Teri Beasley of Oviedo, Fla., Nancy Norwood of Galveston, Rebekah Yonan of Boston, Mass., and Julie Yonana of Tampa; two brothers, Michael Yonan of Chicago, and Joe Yonan of Boston; her stepmother, May Yonan of Chicago, mother-in-law, Jean Engwer, Father-in-law, William Engwer of Pittsburgh; her nephew, Brent Bradley of Savannah, Ga.; and special friends Velda Keen, Helma Hannusch and Carolyn Elliot. Lilla Pauline Etgen, 73, of Bay City passed away on September 1, 2016 in Victoria, Texas. Pauline was born on February 25th, 1943 in Angleton, Texas to parents, Otha and Joan Fowler Caldwell. She was a retired employee of the Bay City Independent School District and a faithful member of St Paul’s United Methodist Church of Bay City. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin Etgen and a son, Jerry Wayne Etgen. She is survived by two sons, David Michael and Marvin Paul Etgen and a sister, CoCo Caldwell. Visitation will be held at Taylor Bros. on Monday, September 5th from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday September 6th at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Ann Rainey Evans, 75, of Bay City passed away June 29, 2011. She was born December 17, 1935, in Bay City, Texas, to the late James Rainey and Iris Rice Rainey. Ann was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She worked at Central Power and Light’s central office and helped in opening the South Texas Project Visitor’s Center for CPandL. She then earned her real estate license and was an agent for Hugh Harper Realty and purchased that business in 1985. Later she founded and operated Ann Evans Real Estate until failing health forced her retirement. She was Past President of Matagorda County Board of Realtors and Past Board Member and Past Secretary for Federation of Employers and Workers of America Foundation. Her hobbies included worldwide travel, collecting bells and taking pictures. Survivors include: her husband of 56 years, Lamar Evans of Bay City; sons, Lamar Evans, Jr. and wife Diane of Katy, Texas, Craig Evans and Scott Evans and wife Pam all of Bay City; brothers, Herbert Rainey of Lake Livingston, Texas, Mickey Rainey and wife Margaret of Needville and Larry Rainey and wife Debbie of Van Vleck; grandchildren, Ashley Ann Evans of Austin, Christopher Evans and wife Hillary, Greg Evans and Robert Evans all of Katy and great-grandson, Bryson Evans of Katy. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for John D. Evans, 88, who moved to Collegeport from Waynesburg, Pa., in 1909 and was one of Matagorda County’s leading citizens. Mr. Evans died in the Matagorda General Hospital at 9 o’clock Monday morning. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Louise Marsland of Bound Brook, N. J. The Rev. George Gillespie of Palacios conducted the services at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home and burial was in the Hawley Cemetery. Many friends are mourning the death of this beloved man, who spent his life doing something good for other people.

Roy Evans, 87, of Bay City passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Matagorda Regional Medical Center. He was born September 19, 1924, in Wayne County, Mississippi to Samuel Oliver Evans and Clara Rolison Evans. He was preceded in death by: his parents; daughter, Sandra Rickaway; twin brother, Rex; brothers, Sam and Lawrence and sisters, Agnes Frost and Jewel Sykes. He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Billie Dean Evans; daughters, Carol Wolf and husband Kevin and Pam Calk and husband Wade; son and wonderful caregiver, Roy Dean Evans; brother, Lamar Evans; grandchildren, Ronald Lynn Rickaway and wife Laurie, Gregory Rickaway, Theresa Puccetti, Gerald Puccetti and wife Chelsey, Jennifer, Jessicca and Ashley Wolf, W. T. Calk and wife Shannon, Amanda Hahn and husband Jason and Dean Evans; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy served his country during World War II with the US Army Company “C” 172D Engineers Combat Battalion.

Funeral services for Richard Thomas Evens were held at the First Baptist Church Sunday, October 1, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. Son of the late William Thomas and Sally Cox Evens, he was born April 12, 1918, in Marietta, Mississippi. He died of a heart attack Friday morning, September 29, while working on his house at 405 Perryman. A resident of Palacios for 30 years, he was a member of the First Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army. He was employed as a truck driver for Hurley Butane. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Laslie Evens; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Elaine Meadows of Tustin, Calif., one son, Richard Martin Evens of Palacios; four sisters Mrs. Arneli Caldwell and Mrs. Betty Heatty of Minden, La., Miss Olie Evens and Mrs. Sue Brown of Bloomington, Texas; two brothers, Claudis Evens of Midland, Texas and Roy Evens of Kensington, Maryland.
