Stanley Eddie Genzer, Sr.
October 10, 1930 - November 24, 2020

Stanley Eddie Genzer, Sr., 90, of Markham passed away November 24, 2020.  He was born in Matagorda County on October 10, 1930, to the late Adolph and Ethel (Vavra) Genzer.  He married the love of his life, Joyce Frick Genzer, on June 16, 1951 and remained devoted to her and their family for 69 years.  One of his passions was twirling his “Cotton Top” either on the dance floor, in the kitchen, or wherever he would strike a tune.

In his earlier years, Dad enjoyed fishing and floundering at Oyster Lake and deer hunting in Hondo. For 34 years, he farmed rice and soybeans in Palacios, Collegeport, and Buckeye.  When tending to his soybeans, he enjoyed singing the Johnny Cash song, “Look at those beans!”

Cooking was another passion.  His homemade chicken noodle soup, dressing, BBQ, and beans were almost legendary and will be missed by all.  He was a charter member of the Markham Volunteer Fire Department established in 1967.  Their annual fund raiser earned him the title of Bean Master.  His fellow firemen joked that he flavored the beans with his cigar ashes.

In his later years, he traded his title of the family “king of washers” to the family “king of cornhole.”  Dad always loved laughter and family gatherings.

He served on the Tidehaven ISD school board for nine years.  Education was a priority.  When he started school, he could only speak Czech.  Dad was an ESL student and didn’t even know it.  Jokingly, he would say that he graduated from Ashby University.

Dad was a member of the First Baptist Church. He upheld The Ten Commandments and cherished faith, family, and friends.  Every night, he prayed in Czech and thanked the dear Lord for the many, many blessings He bestowed upon his family and his home.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Irving, Adolph, Johnny, and Joe Allan, sisters Evelyn, Georgie Hahn, and twin Annie Mae Gates Miller.

Dad is survived by his honey bear and wife, Joyce, sister Bernice Brunner Woodrow, brother Johnny Wayne Micah, children Jane Zapalac (Stephen), Stanley Genzer, Jr. (Joyce), and Jan Piwonka (Ronnie), grandchildren Zachary Zapalac (Jana), Juliane Zapalac Garcia (Aaron), Bryan Genzer (Eva), Nicole Tennant (Mike), Nathan Genzer, Wes Piwonka, and Hannah Garcia (Ken), great grandchildren Barrett and Payton Zapalac, Zane and Zander Garcia, Addison and Ella Tennant, Leila, Drake, and Landon Genzer, and Henley Garcia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services 10:30 am Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Hawley Cemetery.  Masks and social distancing are required.  Pallbearers will be his 7 grandsons: Bryan and Nathan Genzer, Zach Zapalac, Wes Piwonka, Mike Tennant, Aaron Garcia, and Ken Garcia.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Markham Volunteer Fire Department.

J. D. Greenawalt

May 05, 1929 - September 29, 2020

J. D. Greenawalt, 91, of Palacios, Texas, went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2020 after a short illness. He was born on May 5, 1929 in Edna, Texas to Albert Felix and Sadie Mae Hart Greenawalt. He was married to Isabel Louise Abrahamson Greenawalt on September 4, 1953. They just recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.

J. D. graduated from Palacios High School in 1947 and served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He worked for Alcoa for over 30 years developing many life-long friendships there.

J. D. was fiercely devoted to his wife and family. He gave credit to his wife Isabel for being the greatest influence for good in his life and said that she was the glue that held the family together.

Dad was proud of his children, doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved his many nieces and nephews.

Virtues Dad was known for include honesty, fidelity, and a strong work ethic. Dad often talked about the value of a strong work ethic and he considered it a “redeeming virtue” for other character flaws.

Dad had a gift for storytelling and he loved to laugh. We all knew his stories by heart. Because of Dad’s stories we had an idea what it was like to grow up during the depression, to live during the war years, and to see life as he experienced it. Through his stories we got to know our grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins in a more intimate way. We also gained a greater appreciation for the many friends who have made our lives so rich. If you were lucky enough to spend time with Dad at work, in a hunting camp, at a field trial, on the golf course, or any number of other activities…it is likely that you were in some of Dad’s stories.

J. D. loved life and lived it to the full. He told his children that you live life every day and that you don’t wait until you retire to start living. Because of that philosophy, his family and friends are flooded with memories from all the things that he did with us and for us.

Over the years his hobbies included field trialing (he especially loved dogs), hunting, boat racing, golf, and reading. Dad was especially well known as a dog trainer having raised and trained National Champion pointers.

J. D. is survived by his beloved wife Isabel Louise Abrahamson Greenawalt, sons James Dwayne ( Beverly) Greenawalt, Mark Stephen (Linda) Greenawalt, daughter Susan Leigh Greenawalt, grandchildren Mark Ryan Greenawalt, John David (Stacy) Greenawalt, Darren Anthony Samora, Amy Lynn (Tony) Greenawalt Montes, Kristen Elizabeth (Dane) Greenawalt Kubecka, great-grandchildren Hannah Grace Montes, Matthew James Montes, Abby Lynn Montes, Sadie Faith Montes, Brooke Taylor Greenawalt, Shelby Lanae Greenawalt, Luke Mason Greenawalt, Bailey Elizabeth Kubecka, and Clint Andrew Kubecka. He was preceded in death by his daughter Diane Isabel Greenawalt, parents Albert Felix and Sadie Mae Hart Greenawalt, his brothers M.F. Greenawalt, Charles Ray Greenawalt, and Albert Felix Greenawalt.

Services will be held on Friday, October 2, 2020 at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church of Palacios, Pastor David J. Moreno officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Palacios Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Mark Ryan Greenawalt, John David Greenawalt, Darren Anthony Samora, Dane Andrew Kubecka, Tony Montes, granddaughters Amy Lynn Greenawalt Montes, Kristen Elizabeth Greenawalt Kubecka, and Stacy Lynn Bowers Greenawalt. Honorary pallbearer is Charles Gohmert.

The life of a man cannot be summed up in an obituary. J.D. was a man’s man in the very finest sense of the word. Loving, generous, loyal, and to us…bigger than life. We thank Jesus, the author and sustainer of life, that he blessed us with Dad’s presence for 91 years.

Lonnie Dean Greenawalt

March 9, 1949 - May 3, 2022

Lonnie Dean Greenawalt passed away on May 3, 2022 at HCA Southeast Hospital in Pasadena, TX at the age of 73. Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Ray and Marjorie C. (Wendt) Greenawalt; and his sister, Sherri E. Wingard and brother, Charles Jeffery Greenawalt. He is survived by his wife of 49+ years, Judy along with his son, Charles and his wife, Kelly, and their children, Clay, Travis, Callista, Kaia, Ryder, Ansley and Cameron; his brothers, John (wife, Linda) Greenawalt and Kevin Greenawalt and sister, Carol (husband, Jason) Beal; nephews, Justin Greenawalt and Andrew (wife, Tina) Greenawalt; niece, Sarah Wingard, along with a host of friends. Lonnie was born on March 9, 1949 to Charles Ray and Marjorie Corinne (née Wendt) Greenawalt in Pecos, TX. Lonnie was the first of six children and spent his early years in Pecos before the family moved to Port Lavaca followed by Houston and then Palacios where he graduated from Palacios High School in 1968. Lonnie joined the United States Army on May 13, 1968. After basic training, he served one year in Germany then he spent his second year in Vietnam. Lonnie was honorably discharged on May 4, 1971 and happily joined the family in Waco, TX for a short time before joining his father in Alvin, TX as a painter for a couple of years. Then Lonnie went to Florida and utilized the GI Bill to obtain training and certification to became a Heavy Equipment Operator. When his son began working in a tower crane for higher wages, Lonnie quickly transitioned as well and did that until his retirement in 2013. On his 24th birthday (March 9, 1973), Lonnie married the love of his life, Judith Ann Korando. Judy had relocated from her family home in Chester, Illinois and was visiting with a friend when she met Lonnie and there was an immediate attraction and they began dating. Judy says Lonnie never really proposed but instead said “Well, are we getting married on your birthday or mine and I’d prefer mine”! On December 9, 1975, Lonnie and Judy welcomed their son, Charles Eugene Greenawalt and their family was complete. Lonnie’s unfailing work ethic served him well, but nothing kept him from being a Scout Master for Charles’ Boy Scout Troup #840 and making every meeting and event. Lonnie and Charles enjoyed many shared adventures while camping, hiking, and canoeing, and doing whatever was required to earn the next badge. Under his leadership, Charles attained the rank of Eagle Scout and Lonnie could not have been prouder of him. Lonnie was an avid reader but also loved fishing from an early age. His nightstand by the bed never lacked a stack of books. He amazed people by telling them he was simultaneously reading 4-5 books at the same time. He also loved to fish and was super excited when he purchased his boat. He and Judy, along with his brother, John, would frequently be up before dawn to make it to a favored fishing spot. They were not always successful in their fishing endeavors, but they always enjoyed being together and making special memories sharing jokes and stories about the ones that got away. Lonnie’s mind was forever seeking new knowledge and opportunities. When he worried about the declining construction industry, he enrolled in night school with the goal of getting his heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning certification. Before he could complete his training, the feared downturn happened, and he was unemployed. The only employment Lonnie could find was in New Jersey, so he bought a Merry Miler van and left his family in Houston and moved to the job site. He was allowed to use the electricity and water from the site in exchange for being the night security. He returned to Houston but in later years spent time working in Florida and Arizona when jobs in Houston were scarce. Lonnie was always looking for things to do after work and on weekends. When his son, Charles, brought home a wood Texas-shaped clock that he made in a wood shop class, Lonnie decided to start a side business and set up the garage to do woodwork. He and Judy produced Texas clocks, wall shelves, bookcases, and a variety of other products that they sold at Fairs and other events on weekends. Lonnie’s retirement project came about when Charles gave Judy a hibiscus for a special occasion. Lonnie started researching and planning and was soon in business growing hibiscus. Over a number of years and much frustration, Lonnie and Judy worked out all the myriad of details required to formulate the process of obtaining the rooted hibiscus in January, transplanting them to larger pots, watering and fertilizing them in February and finally selling them in March in “flash” sales on their driveway. Lonnie was a loving and devoted grandfather, although he was frequently given a warning look from Judy when he got the grandkids stirred up and hollering with his practical jokes. They called him PawPaw and he had a special relationship with each one of them. Lonnie and Judy attended almost all the various school events and activities, from choir concerts to football and basketball games. Having been on the high school football team himself, he especially enjoyed watching his grandsons playing football. When his grandson Travis earned a D1 athletic scholarship to play football for the HBU Huskies, PawPaw decided he would go to every game, and he did just that, driving from Houston New Mexico and then to Louisiana to attend games. And Travis always knew he was there when he heard Lonnie’s distinctive yell of “TRAAAVVVIS”. His grandson Ryder especially enjoyed spending time with him and begged to go to his house every day after school. Lonnie’s “little buddy” was allowed to negotiate time playing on Lonnie’s cell phone even after Lonnie found out Ryder ordered a helmet and several sets of gloves from Amazon without asking…and without Lonnie even realizing he knew how to do that! Lonnie impacted so many people throughout his life. It started when he was Scout Master and helped his son and other young men work through the ranks to achieve Eagle Scout. That progressed over the years to helping other young men get their first jobs. His tutelage and belief in them changed the rest of their lives. He was always patient with young people and helped them understand what they needed to do to succeed. Lonnie has left a legacy of love and he will be missed by so many.

Monetta Gregurek
November 25, 1939 ~ February 18, 2021

Monetta Lee Gregurek, age 81, was a wonderful woman that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. She passed away peacefully February 18, 2021 after losing her battle with cancer. She was born November 25, 1939 to William B. Hubbard and Julia Tanner Hubbard. She was married on October 22, 1955 to the love of her life, Philip J. Gregurek, who preceded her in death in August of 2020. Dancing was one of their favorite past times, while attending many weddings Monetta and Philip would be one of the last couples dancing to the tradition of how long a couple was married.

Monetta loved to have her family nearby, and was a dedicated wife, mother and Nana. She treasured her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. From arm wrestling with her boys, throwing baseballs in the backyard to helping them work on the grass farm was something she did with love and pride. She embraced every moment with them. She always had cookies and treats out on her kitchen island for the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her famous sweet ice tea was always fresh and in demand. There were many a mouth she fed over the years making sure they had a “full belly”. Each grandchild and great grandchild had their own special memory of Nana.

Whether it was through her phenomenal cooking (blackberry cobbler, bohemian tacos, homemade salsa to name a few) or her special holiday gift bags that she made for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she always made you feel special. She was the Queen to our Buffalo on our Barbeque team “The Wild Bunch” and even had her own signature BBQ sauce that was used every year that won many trophies. Joining in on the girl’s group “Beer around the World” only added to the fun and many memories were made. Her participation didn’t just stop there. She spent many a day mud racing with her boys by endlessly videoing each race. No wonder the sign on the back of the “Wild Turkey” race truck proudly says, “Thank You Mom”.

For many years, she was an Avon lady and enjoyed visiting with all of her customers. She mentored all of us with her commitment and success as an Avon representative. She just had a way of making everyone feel that special.

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Sweeny, TX.

Monetta is survived by her sons and their families: Philip Jr. (Donna), Paul David (Kelly), and Mark Alan (Evette), grandchildren Philip Matthew Gregurek (Tabitha), Christopher Gregurek (Stephanie), Jayson Gregurek (Jessica), Yvonne McKnight (Brandon), David Lee Gregurek, Jeremy Yearout (Samantha), Chais Yearout (Liz), Julia Stock, Cody Filipp, and Cord Filipp. Nana was blessed with 10 great grandchildren: Zachary Philip Gregurek, Bradley Gregurek, Laynee Gregurek, Wyatt Gregurek, Connor Gregurek, Dakota Gregurek, Harper Gregurek, Damon McKnight, Emma Yearout, and Ella Yearout and 1 sweet angel in heaven, Evelyn Jane Yearout. We will forever be tied to our mother and Nana by the invisible heartstrings called love.

Mrs. Gregurek’s grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.

Visitation with the family will be on Monday, March 1, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of C.T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home, West Columbia, TX., with a rosary to recited at 7:00 p.m.
