Vencie Jean (Yeager) Hadley, 68, of Bay City passed away June 7, 1996 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. She was born December 26, 1927 in Bay City, Texas to George Briscoe and Vencie Shriver Yeager. She was a member of the Methodist Church and a life-long resident of the area. She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Richey, Janice Nesbitt, and Georgeann Hadley, all of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Susan Hadley of Eagle Lake, Texas; sister, Janice Yeager Sailor of Monarch, Mt.; brother and sister-in-law, George and Dorothy Yeager of Bay City. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Larry and Christie Harrison of Cedar Lane, Crystal and Frederick L. “Pokey” Pierce of Blessing, Danne Richey, Amanda Nesbitt both of Bay City, Bryan and Russell Hadley of Eagle Lake and Kaycee Castleberry of Bay City, also five great-grandchildren, Chase Harrison of Cedar Lane, Brandon Thomas of Cedar Lane, Colton, Sarena and Sabrina Pierce all of Blessing. Vera Hahn, 76, of Wadsworth, Texas died Sunday, Oct. 13, 1996 at her residence. She was born April 2, 1920 to parents John and Vera Vychopen Kopac in Caldwell. She was a member of the Rhema Fellowship Church in Bay City. She retired from the Bay City Independent School District after 20 years of service in the cafeteria. Survivors are son, Marvin Hahn of Wadsworth; daughters, Dolores Arendall of Natalia, Texas, and Rosie Avant, San Antonio; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p. m. at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Villareal of the Rhema Fellowship Church officiating. Annie Hall, 59, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 19, 2012. She passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born on September 25, 1952 in New Braunfels, Texas, to Franz and Mary Hildebrand. Annie married her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Johnny Hall, on August 19, 1972. She went on to have three children, James, Raymond, and Leanne. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Annie believed in showing Jesus’ love to all. Her generous and loving spirit has impacted many lives and she will be in the hearts of everyone she met. Annie is survived by: her husband, Johnny Hall; three children, James (Kris), Raymond (Cathy), and Leanne (James Lee Johnson); seven grandchildren, Valarie, Owen, Ashley, Kaelyn, Jayleigh, Kailey, and Kerri; brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. James Hamilton (Squeaky), 64, passed away at his home in Hamilton, Montana on June 23, 2012. He grew up in Cedar Lane, Texas and lived there until moving to Hamilton, Montana in 2004. He was born to Jim and Amy (Whittlesey) Hamilton on May 29, 1948. James graduated from Van Vleck ISD in 1966, then attended Sam Houston University and receiving a Bachelors and Masters degree in Art and English in 1975. The majority of his career he was employed through the State of Texas, working for TEC in Bay City and then managing the Wharton office until he left in 2003. Upon moving to Montana, he worked with the State of Montana Workforce until he retired in 2009. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Amy and Jim Hamilton; and his son, Logan Hamilton. He is survived by: Gabriel Trollinger - Hamilton, Jaggar Hamilton, and Laci Hamilton; and grandchildren, Garrett, Gabrielle, Joeli, Skyler, Kendal, Jaggar Jr., Jason Jr., and Thomas. He is also survived by one sister, Sue Hamilton Ellis (Leonard), two nephews and two nieces. An informal memorial service will be held for James from 10 a.m. until 2p.m., July 21, 2012 at the Hampton Inn in Bay City, Texas. James Jesse Harris Jr., 60 of Sweeny, Texas, passed away April 5, 1996 at his residence. He was born January 4, 1936 in Blessing, Texas to James Jesse Harris Sr. and Velma Florence Dorris Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of the Baptist Church and a resident of Sweeny for 34 years. He was formerly employed as an operator for Celanese Chemical for 15 years and for the past 14 years was employed by Seagull Energy Products in Palacios. Velma Harris, 78, of Francitas died Tuesday, May 18, 1993. She was born March 30, 1915 in Markham, to the late Benjamin C. and Clara E. Green Dorris. She was a homemaker and member of Francitas Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Hazel Deen of Francitas; sons, James J. Harris Jr. of Sweeny and Charles L. Harris of California; brother, James L. Black of Markham; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Friends of this community were shocked when they received the news Wednesday afternoon, that Mr. and Mrs. C. A[E]. Harter, were in an automobile accident in Colorado. Mr. Harter was killed instantly and Mrs. Harter was injured critically. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Love, friend with whom they were riding, were also injured. Mr. Harter’s body arrived Sunday noon and funeral services were held t the family residence at three o’clock, with Rev. Engle of Bay City, officiating and burial was in the Hawley cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers of Bay City. Mr. Harter was survived by his wife, two sons, Avon and Kirk and two grandchildren. Friends of this community extend their deepest sympathy and sorrow, to the bereaved family. Mr. Avon and Kirk Harter left immediately after funeral services for Colorado to be at the bedside of their mother who isn’t expected to live.

Frances C. Harvey, at the age of 94 years, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Legacy Campus Matagorda Healthcare Center in Bay City, Texas. She was greatly loved by her family, especially all her grandchildren who thought she was the world’s greatest cook, and the one to whom they should tell all their secrets when they spent the night with her. She will be remembered and missed by the ones she left behind…yet who know that one day we shall again see MaMa….this time in Heaven. Mrs. Harvey was born in Devers, Texas, on March 14, 1918, but a few years later her parents, Aze Berry and Anna Snider, moved to Palacios, Texas. As a young girl, she met and later married Freeman Harvey whose family moved from East Texas to Palacios. The couple had five children, a daughter, Nalona Harvey Neuszer (husband, Leo), Blessing; four sons: Gaylon Harvey (wife, Rosemary), Blessing; Larry Harvey (wife, Dorette), Alvin; Donnie (wife, Mary Jo), Palacios; and Lonnie (wife, Wanda), Palacios. She had 16 Grandchildren; 36 Great-Grandchildren, and 7 Great-Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, three sisters, her husband, Freeman Harvey, and her son, Lonnie Harvey, and 1 infant grandchild, and 4 infant great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harvey’s service will be Friday, July 27, 2012, at 10:00AM at Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios, TX. Visitation will be Thursday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Palacios Funeral Home. Mrs. Heller was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Markham to Elwood and Imma Jean Thompson Smith and died June 13, 1994, in the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. She retired in 1979 as assistant post master for the U. S. Postal Service in Markham. A life long resident of Markham, she was a member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church in Markham. Survivors include two sons, Henry Lawrence Heller of Pasadena and Wilburn Howard Heller of Markham; two granddaughters, Stephanie Heller of San Antonio and Chrystal Heller of Ganado and by a cousin, Luella Harper of Bay City. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. B. “Bunny” Heller on June 21, 1963. Pallbearers will be Joe Carter, Gerald Matting, James Cowgar, Bill Ottis, Lee Hall Pierce and Daniel Cornelius. Maudell Gillette Hidy went to be with her Lord , dying peacefully at home July 5, 2012. Maudell was born in Orangefield, Texas on September 9, 1924 to the late Emanuel and Palmy Broussard Gillette. Maudell enjoyed duck hunting and finding native American arrowheads. She traveled all over the world taking cruises and playing golf. Maudell started playing the piano at church and social functions from a very early age. She worked at Camp Hulen during WWll with her father. She was one of the original pink ladies at Wagner General Hospital. During the 1960’s she worked at the First Baptist Church in Palacios as Nursery Director and Church Secretary. She also helped her husband Buster on the operation of Gillett Net Shop. She was a beloved wife and caregiver to her husbands. She was a member of the Grace Fellowship Church at Fair Oaks Ranch, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios for 40 years. VICTORIA - John Milton Hiltpold, 90, passed away peacefully March 4, 2012. He was born October 11, 2011 to parents, Lillie and Ulrich Hiltpold in Matagorda County .
He served in the Army of the United States in the 40th Division Headquarters Company, 108th Infantry where he received three Bronze Stars and many various ribbons and medals for military action. Growing up in rural Texas in depression years prepared him for a life of determination and independence that taught values in surviving with limited resources and relying on oneself.

Mrs. Dorothy Ramsey Hite, 86, of Wharton died Wednesday morning, April 25, 2012, in a Sugar Land Hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on September 19, 1925 in Wharton, Texas, the daughter of the late Ira G. Broughton and Alma Neal Smith Broughton. Mrs. Hite was married to James Hite who preceded her in death on July 2, 2007. Survivors include: her sons, Rob Ramsey (and wife, Lynn) of San Antonio and Van Broughton Ramsey of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren, Ashley Ramsey Weaver (and husband, Kevin) of Kansas City, Kansas and Meagan Ramsey Greene (and husband, Boyd) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; great-grandchildren, Ramsey Claire, Henry, Clayton, Madeline, Sam and Eloise; and cousin, Barbara Sliva (and husband Frank), of Bay City. Mrs. Hite was a graduate of Wharton High School and later studied dancing in the Los Angeles area. She taught dancing for many years in Wharton and Bay City and was active in the Puppet Ministry at First Baptist Church in Wharton, where she was a longtime member. She loved the Lord, her family, her friends, her dogs, dancing, the theater, and puppeteering. And she loved Wharton. It was where she was born, where she lived most of her life, and where she will be buried. Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Mickey Reynolds officiating. Pallbearers will be John Travis Bailey, Jeffrey Blair, Kenny Blair, Lawrence Burnett, Boyd Greene, and Kevin Weaver. Burial will follow in the Wharton Cemetery in Wharton. In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family asks that any memorials be sent in the form of donations to Wharton County S.P.O.T. (Stray Pet Outreach Team), P.O. Box 584, Wharton, Texas 77488. Sandra "Sandy" Y. Hoffman, 68 of Sargent, went home to be with the Lord on March 7th, 2012 after a brief illness. Sandy was born in Lynchburg, Virginia and spent most of her young life there. She met the love of her life, John L. Hoffman, while working at the officer’s club at Fort Belvoir Virginia. John and Sandy went on to wed and had two children that she cherished, Lisa and John. Sandy’s fondest memory was raising her children and then enjoying time with her grandchildren. Sandy had a special gift of taking care of people usually through her cooking. No one left the Hoffman house hungry. Sandy spent her final years on earth celebrating Christ with her Church buddies at Calvary Church in Sargent. Sandy’s sweet smile and demeanor will be missed by many on earth but is now being celebrated in Heaven. Sandy is survived by her daughter, Lisa J. Hoffman of Sargent, son John P. Hoffman and wife Wendy of Bay City, and three grandchildren, Carissa Hoffman, Kaley Hoffman, and Lesley Hoffman. Sandy was preceded in death by her husband John Leslie Hoffman. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home on Friday, March 9th. Funeral service will be 2PM Saturday, March 10th at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. Floyd Holloway, 76, of Blessing passed away Dec. 6, 1996 at Detar Hospital in Victoria. He was born August 22, 1920 in DeQueen, Arkansas to Floyd H. and Eva Mae Hyman Holloway. He had been a resident of Palacios for 69 years prior to moving to Blessing a year ago. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Adkisson Holloway of Blessing; by one daughter and son-in-law, Bettie and James Hagaman of Blessing; by four sisters, Dessie Lehmann of Spring, Bessie Green of Nordheim, Ruth Britt of Dayton, and Nona Warner of Munbank; by three brothers, Clyde Holloway of Sandia, Texas, Lloyd Holloway of Palacios, and Gary Holloway of Cleveland; and by two grandchildren, Cody Hagaman of Blessing, and Stacy Novak and her husband, Andy of Blessing. Graveside services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996 at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with Bro. Shan Jackson officiating. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Palacios.

Beulah Ann Horne, known as Ann to friends and mom to family, was born in Ohio on June 15, 1934. She was one of three daughters born to William Kennedy and Virginia Buckley. Thomas (Tom) William Horne (Sr.) and Ann met in River Rouge, Michigan in April of 1954 and later married on January 7, 1955. She (along with her husband Tom) took a keen interest in the study of God’s Word in 1958 and after a series of weekly home bible discussions both dedicated their lives to Jehovah God. They symbolized that dedication through water immersion on May 4, 1961. Tom and Ann moved from Michigan to Texas in 1970 to “serve where the need was greater.” Upon arriving in Texas, they set up residence in Palacios, Texas, commuting to and serving in the Jehovah’s Witnesses Bay City, Texas congregation. Both later served in a congregation set up in Palacios, Texas. In June of 1977, Tom, Ann and family moved to Bay City, Texas and have served in the Bay City, Texas congregation to date. She is preceded in death by: her parents, William Kennedy and Virginia Buckley; sister, Joanne Kennedy; and one son, Thomas William Horne Jr.. She is survived by: her husband ,Thomas William Horne Sr.; one son, John J. Horne; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Horne and Kendall Horne Niles; one sister, Charlene (Margaret) Kennedy; one son-in-law, Stephen Dale Niles; one daughter-in-law, Vicki Jo Horne; eight grandchildren, Amy Marie Horne, Johnathan Thomas Horne, Alara Rianne Brumaghin, Gary Ryan Smith, Jayme Erin Smith, James Grey Smith, Luke Brenham Horne, and Matthew Thomas Niles; seven great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Joined with the family are more than 7.5 million Jehovah’s Witnesses around the earth that look forward to seeing when the bible based “Hope” of a resurrection becomes a reality. Funeral services for Glenda McSwane Hughes, 60, of Buffalo, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Sunday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Mrs. Hughes was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Lafayette, La., and died May 20, 1994, in Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Fairfield. A retired supervisor and teacher of special education, she was active in cattle and ostrich ranching. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Hughes Glover and George Glover, both of Buffalo; a grandson, Will Glover of Buffalo and a granddaughter, Lindsay Glover of Buffalo. Pallbearers are Steve Barton, Arthur Milberger, Greg Westmoreland, Charlie Allison, Lindsey Thompson and Bruce Richardson. Dorothy M. Humphreys, 90, of Palacios, TX, passed away Friday, April 28, 1995 at the Palacios Healthcare Center, Palacios. She was born August 5, 1905 in Dallas, TX to Hugh and Sadie Rice McNutt. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios. The Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former member of The Athena Club of Palacios. She attended Business College in Dallas, the Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, and married Earl F. Humphreys on November 25, 1945 in Rockwell, TX. She is survived by her husband, Earl F. Humphreys of Palacios, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were 10:00 a. m., Monday, May 1, 1995 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service will be Rev. Ralph Smith of The First United Methodist Church, Palacios and Rev. Jessie Jones of The United Pentecostal Church, Palacios. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, TX. Funeral services were held Wednesday for Edwin Edward Hurta Jr., 49, of Edna. Burial was at Memory Gardens of Edna. Mr. Hurta was born July 15, 1943 in El Campo to Edwin Edward and Anna Mae Swinky Hurta Sr. and he died Dec. 28, 1992 at a Victoria hospital. He was a county commissioner in Jackson County’s Precinct 3 since 1984 and a member of First United Methodist Church. Monday he would have started his third four-year term as commissioner. He was a graduate of Tidehaven High School. Mr. Hurta was a member of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department, club service chairman for the Edna Rotary Club, board member of the Edna Little League Association and a member of the Golden Crescent Regional Council of Governments. He was also a member of the Edna Jaycees and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture as well as being involved in the Heart Foundation of Texas. He was a plant manager and secretary-treasurer for the former Wells-Wright, Inc. in Edna. He married the former Priscilla Fitzgerald Oct. 19, 1963 in Blessing. Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Fitzgerald Hurta; two daughters, Lynda Brooks of Odessa and Brenda Stewart of Hallettsville; a son, Jason Edward Hurta of Edna; his parents, Anna and Edwin Hurta Sr. of Midfield; a sister, LaVerne Hicks of Midfield; two brothers, Marvin W. Hurta of Ashby and Lawrence of Midfield and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were with Slavik Funeral Home in Edna.
