Patricia Howarth of Bryan, died at her residence Nov. 12, 2000. She was born March 22, 1921. Following graduation from Bates College and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, Pat worked for several years as a secretary to the chairman of the Romance Language Department at Harvard University.

She married John Howarth, Class of '41 in 1945. They lived with their adopted daughter, Christina Joy, in Reading, Mass. for 28 years; Pat took courses at the Northeastern University suburban campus and discovered her interest in the elderly.

She took the first course for nursing home activities director and worked in this field until John retired in 1975. On July 4, 1975 John and Pat sold out in Reading and headed west in the modern day "covered wagon," a 20-foot motor home, pulling a small car with two bicycles on the roof.

Pat often said that this was a beginning of many "great adventures." They found Palacios, Texas, a small city on the coast. Many productive years followed in a community they came to love.

Pat resumed her interest in the elderly and instigated the forming and naming of the Friends of Elder Citizens, senior project. Pat worked on all grant writing and publicity for a senior citizens nutrition center. In 1983, Pat received the "Woman of the Year" award for her work in behalf of the seniors of Palacios and her efforts in the field of alcoholism.

Pat enjoyed many years of participating and volunteering at this center. She wrote the "Senior Newslines," published in the Palacios Beacon weekly for many years. Her one main love was the Senior Center and the Palacios community. Her husband John, a partner with her in the Senior Center project died in 1984.
