SPC Andrew S. Hafen

June 23, 1988 – January 12, 2014

SPC Andrew S. Hafen, 25, formerly of Bay City, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014 in Clarksville, TN.

Hafen was born June 23, 1988 in San Bernadino, CA and was the son of Keith (Kathy) Hafen and Michele Marsh (Brook) Hoyt. He graduated BCHS in 2006 as a distinguished scholar. He joined the army shortly after his daughter was born, and graduated with honors from AIT. He went on to become a member of the 101st Airborne (Air Assault). He was deployed in October of 2012 and returned stateside in July of 2013. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service posthumously.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sonja Hafen; and grandfather, James Marsh; and two young cousins.

Other than his parents; survivors include his wife, Laura “Gaby” Rodriguez Hafen; daughter, Nadia “Izzy” Hafen; brothers, Lucas Hafen and Stephen Hafen; step-sisters, Ashley (David) Schild, Brianna Hoyt; grandparents, Juleen (Paul) Downer, DeWayne Hafen, Jackie Wilson; sister-in-law, Laura Diaz; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins; three nieces; and one nephew.

George W. Haines

HAINES, George W., 64 died early Saturday morning following an extended illness. A Bay City resident for many years. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. at Bay City Funeral Home with the Rev. James B. Billman officiating. Burial was in Hawley Cemetery, under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bernadette Speckman of Bay City, two brothers, Preston Haines of Bay City, William Haines, Houston. One sister, Mrs. George Gray of Houston and two grandchildren. Memorials may be sent in lieu of flowers to the M. D. Anderson Hospital, Houston. Pallbearers: Frank Craft, James Craft, Robert Craft, J. B. Graham, W. J. Klingaman, Claude Hall.

P. R. Hamill dies at age 85

P. R. Hamill, former chairman of the board of Bay City Bank and Trust Co., died Thursday at the age of 85 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Commenting on Hamill’s death, Frank Kruppa, executive vice president of Bay City Bank & Trust Co., said that Hamill would be sorely missed.

“He was certainly one of the pioneers in Bay City and Matagorda County,” Kruppa said. “His banking career stretched back for many years, and he made many valuable contributions to the area.”

Services will be held for Hamill Saturday at 11 a. m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City. The Rev. LeRoy Stanton will officiate. Burial at Cedarvale Cemetery will follow the services.

P. R. Hamill’s family moved to Bay City in 1909 after the Old Spindletop Well was brought in. Hamill’s father, Curtis Hamill, driller of that famous well, also brought in the first oil well in Matagorda County at Clemville.

Hamill was student leader of the Bay City High School band in 1911. He graduated from the University of Texas and was a member of its band. He led the band at halftime during the Texas and Notre Dame game in which Knute Rockne played and again at the ceremonies when the Battleship Texas was docked at San Jacinto.

Hamill founded Bay City Bank & Trust on June 1, 1918. He was the owner of the bank, and served it as president and chairman of the board until 1964 when he became honorary chairman of the board he retired from that position in December of 1978. He was a member of the Federal Reserve Board and served as president of the Texas Bankers Association.

Hamill was active in the community as a member of the City Council of Bay City, a member of the board of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce and president of the Bay City Country Club when it was organized. He was also a member of the board of the Lower Colorado River Authority, a member of the Matagorda County Museum Association board, a member of the Bay City Library Board and a member of the board of stewards of the First United Methodist Church.

Hamill is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae Perry Hamill of Marshall; his daughter Barbara Ray Timanus and son-in-law Hall E. Timanus of Houston; his brother, Claude Hamill of Houston; his two grandchildren, Hall E. Timanus, Jr. and Barbara Timanus Dexter of Houston; and by his four great-grandchildren, Carrie and Laura Timanus and Stephen and Lindsey Dexter.

Hamill’s pallbearers will be Millard Brooking, Jack Huebner, Frank Kruppa, Bill Humphrey, Charles Cobb and Stephen Perry.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Charles Roy Haney

December 30, 1930 – February 19, 2014

Charles Roy Haney, 83, of Bay City, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at home, with his family by his side.

He was born in Sebastian, Texas on December 30, 1930. He was an A1C Air Force Korean Veteran. He was an avid softball player for 58 years and was a recognized softball player for the Air Force Soft Ball Team.

He worked for Celanese Chemical Company for 34 years as an operator and was on the Celanese Emergency Response Team.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nina Belle Williams; father, Roy Hill Haney; wife, Aleida Anne Lambert Haney; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Haney Nyman; and great-granddaughter, Alexandria Rupe.

He is survived by his daughters Katherine Elaine Haney Ussery and Michelle Dionne Haney Neumann; grandson, Owen Roy Neumann; granddaughters, Shannon Nicole Nyman, Sarah Houston Ussery Garza and Isabelle Marie Dionne Neumann; and great-grandchildren, Katilyn Rupe, Gabrielle Rupe and Kamryn Fischer.

Memorial services will be held from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the Celanese Park.

Bruce Steven Hanson
13 May 1954 – 3 February 2014

GRAPELAND - Bruce Steven Hanson, 59 of Grapeland, passed away February 3, 2014. He was born on May 13, 1954 in Bay City to Granville "Doc" and Dolores Nyquist Hanson. He was a lifelong beekeeper and a member of Sioux Bee Honey Corp. Bruce had 3,500 hives of bees between South Dakota and Texas.

He is survived by his wife Toni Praytor Hanson, brothers Dennis Hanson of Sweeny and Brian Hanson of Corpus Christi, sister Cindy Hanson of Corpus Christi, step-children Ryan Ramsey and wife Kristen, Adrienne Perkins and husband Michael, and grandchildren Hunter, Holton, Dane and Jack.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Triska Funeral Home with Kris Humble officiating. Burial will follow at a later date.

Esther Hardegree
(August 25, 1916 - September 13, 2013)

Esther Hardegree, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 13, 2013 at the Matagorda House in Bay City. Esther Elizabeth Augsburger was born August 25, 1916 to Amos and Mary Augsburger. She moved to Sweeny, Texas when her parents relocated from Illinois. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Lawrence “Six” and Clarence Augsburger; her first husband Troye F. “Tuffy” Adams; her second husband, Gordon Hardegree; her niece Mary Walker and nephew David Augsburger. She is survived by two sisters Eva Orr of Sweeny and Peggy Young of College Station; four nieces Shirley Carter, Peggy Galyean, Laura Long and Debbie Greer; six nephews Tommy Orr, Larry & Harper Augsburger, Richard, Jim and Wayne Young and numerous great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and special friend, Barbara Jo Baethe.

Esther was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she and her first husband worked with the youth group. She also taught Sunday School, was senior adult department director, served on committees and participated in numerous mission ministries, touching many lives through the years. Everyone who knew her knew she loved the Lord and her Church. In her later years, she was member of the Jet Set and the senior adult choir, the Jublilaires of the Church. She and her husband Tuffy lived in Africa for a while, where she served her Lord doing mission work. Esther loved Bay City and was a community servant. She was a Pink Lady and volunteered many hours as a part of this organization to help others. Her life was about service and helping others.

She retired from First National Bank of Bay City after many years of service. She had a strong work ethic and mentored many beginning employees. She loved to cook and entertain family and friends. She is best know for her famous yeast rolls. She enjoyed playing bridge and could rarely be beaten in a game of forty-two. She also loved to travel and took numerous cruises.

You always knew when Esther was around, as there was always laughter. Hers was contagious. Her keen wit and sense of humor brightened any room. A copy of the following verse was found in her dresser and marked in her Bible: “And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Thy strength to this generation. Thy power to all who are to come.” Psalms 71:18.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM Monday, September 16, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with funeral services following at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Zimmerman and nephew, Rev. Jim Young officiating. She will be interred next to her first husband at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be Frank Baethe, Troye Bradley Baethe, Jimmy L. Farica Priscilla Harper

Funeral services will be held for Priscilla Harper, 65, of Palacios, 4 p. m. today (Friday) at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Officiating at the services will be the Reverends Barry Bauerschlag and Marvin Moore.

Harper died January 7, 1962 at the Wagner General Hospital in Palacios.

Survivors include husband, John Alfred Harper of Palacios; daughters, Susan Joy Harper of Houston, Marilyn Jean Varner of Brazoria, Priscilla Lois Whited of Palacios; sons, John Alfred Gene Harper of Palacios, Hubert Alan Harper of Bay City, Russell Lynn Harper of Cleburne, sisters, Zelda Dunn of Riverside, California, Naomi Kyle of Madisonville, Lora White of Fort Benning, Ga., Darlene Owsley of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Hope Crain of Beaumont, Buford Crain of Hollister, Florida, Thornell Crain of Jacksonville, Florida.

She has been a resident of Palacios since 1955.

Burial will follow services at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Harold Gene Harper Sr.

A memorial service for Harold Gene Harper Sr., 68, lifetime resident of Palacios, TX, was held June 15, 2013 at 109 Commerce Street in Palacios.

Harold Harper – Red, as his brothers and sisters referred to him – was born April 14, 1945, to the late John A. Harper and Farica P. (Polly) Harper in Lockhart, and passed away June 6, 2013 in Palacios.

He is survived by his sons, Harold Harper Jr., Jeffrey Harper, and Markus Harper; brothers Johnny Harper, Hubert Harper, and Russell Harper; sisters Susan Rich, Marilyn Waring, and Priscilla Harper; as well as his 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Jackson Harper and his only wife Maxine.

Harold (HG) was an avid Cowboys fan, brisket champion, pool shark, expert welder, and guitar player.  Harold's impact on the community can be seen around town in the houses, boats, barbecue pits, and felt in the hearts of the people of Palacios.

Kirk Veyne Harter Dies At Blessing

Mr. Kirk Veyne Harter, age 56 years and five days passed away at his residence in Blessing, Texas at 7:45 on November 8th. He had been a resident of Blessing for 40 years. Mr. Harter is survived by one brother Avon E. Harter of Blessing.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 at Taylor Brothers Funeral home with the Rev. A. C. Maxted officiating. Interment in the Hawley Cemetery with Masonic ritual.

Jessie Lafayette Harvey

VANDERBILT—Jessie Lafayette Harvey, 92, of Vanderbilt, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999.

He was born July 28, 1907, in Broddus, to the late Jasper and Dee Quinn Harvey. He was a retired mechanic and bus driver for the Industrial ISD. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors: daughter, Lanelle Sliva of Edna; Donald F. Harvey of Lafayette, La., Weyman Harvey of Edna and Kenneth Harvey of Humble; sister, Mattie Snider of Markham; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: parents and four brothers.

Services will be 10 a. m. Monday at Slavik Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Jack Hudson officiating.

Maudie Mae Hauff

Funeral services for Maudie Mae Hauff, 94, of Matagorda were held 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Oliver Southall officiating.

Interment was to follow at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda.

Mrs. Hauff died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 in Bay City. She was born August 20, 1905 in Bosque County, Tex. to Jim Hadley and Lillie Hastie Hadley.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Matagorda and a resident of Matagorda for the past 30 years.

She was known by all for her great love of home, family and friends. She took great pleasure in fishing and working in her yard, which was a joy for all passers-by.

She is survived by: her daughters and sons-in-law, Stella Phillips of Bay City; Marie Beck of Sweeny, Dorothy and Jerry Boleyn of Sweeny and Joyce and Dickey Schneider of Port Lavaca; by her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Arlie Hauff of Matagorda; by a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Pauline Hadley of Olivia; 18 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband of 57 years, Phillip Hauff, son Kenneth Hauff; and two grandchildren, Jerry Boleyn and Mike Davis Gasaway.

Pallbearers were to include: George West, Mark Phillips, Ricky Gasaway, Calvin Taylor, Clyde Hauff, Jr. and Kenneth Hauff, Jr.

Funeral Services For Miss Rose Hawk Are Held Here Thursday

Funeral services for Miss Rose Hawk of Clemville were held Thursday afternoon at the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home here with the Rev. R. E. Black of Markham officiating. Burial was in the Hawley Cemetery.

Miss Hawk died Tuesday morning, June 14, in a San Antonio hospital. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Showers of Caney and Mrs. Edith Alexander of Bay City; three brothers, Joe of Clemville, Charlie of Letcher, South Dakota, and John of Lake Wilson, Minnesota.

Palacios Man Buried Sunday – Horace E. Hawks

Horace E. Hawks of Palacios passed away in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston on Friday at the age of 73.

A native of Bradley, Tennessee, he had been a resident of Palacios for the past seven years.

Services were Sunday at 3 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with interment in Hawley Cemetery, Rev. E. Bozeman.

Survivors includes his wife, Mrs. Kate Hawks of Palacios; three stepdaughters, Mrs. D. L. Rowe of Lancaster, Mrs. Charles Vasek of Pasadena, and Mrs. Bertice Smith of Eagle Lake; and two stepsons, Jack Smith of Eagle Lake and J. L. Smith of Houston.

Pallbearers were Verlin Murphy, Persey Reed, W. C. Spoore, Joe Tanner, Bill Jenkins, Bob Crawford and Bob Jenkins.

Services were under the direction of Palacios Funeral Home.

Marianne Hayes
(August 26, 1923 - November 11, 2013)

Marianne Vercher (Sullivan) Hayes died Monday, November 11, 2013 in Bay City, TX at the age of 90-years. She was born August 26, 1923 at home on Wallace’s Prairie near Whitehall in Grimes County, TX. She was the second of six children born to Edward Franklin Sullivan, Jr. and Ruth Elizabeth (Meineke) Sullivan. She married Gilbert Louis Hayes February 1, 1952 in Houston, TX and their union lasted 30-years until his death November 27, 1982.

Marianne enjoyed a very active and full life…a life that mattered. She led by quiet example, giving back to the world in which she lived. In addition to having a number of jobs outside the home during her lifetime, she participated in many organizations. Most important was supporting the Markham United Methodist Church in various capacities, but she also had other wide-ranging interests. These included belonging to the Memory Makers Quilt Guild, the Midfield Extension Homemakers Club, the Matagorda County Genealogical Society, the Bay City Nature Club, the Matagorda County Aggie Moms’ Club, the Matagorda County Chapter of AARP, was an Emeritus Member of the Matagorda County Museum Association Board of Directors, and served as a long-standing notary public and election judge in Markham.

Above all, Marianne’s love of family knew no bounds. She and Gilbert raised their children to be educated, responsible adults. She did so by supporting each of their interests and offering wise words of encouragement when needed. She was very proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She cherished her dear friends, many pets (mostly cats), the color purple, family reunions, and enjoyed the Houston Rockets and funny birthday cards. She was an outstanding cook and family and friends always looked forward to enjoying the delicious dishes she prepared, especially desserts. Marianne will be sorely missed by all who loved her.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Elise Lawrence and Martha Jonas. She is survived by sons: Allan (Patty) Hayes of Corpus Christi, Glenn (Janis) Hayes of Markham, and Joel (Melissa) Hayes of Jakarta, Indonesia; daughters: Lou Anne (Douglas) Kahlich of Midland, and Susan (David) Salidivar of Bay City, ten grandchildren: Robby (Stacey) Henske, Elizabeth Anne (Tyler) Topper, Kristin Kahlich, David (Allison) Kahlich, James Kahlich, Zachary Hayes, Russell (Tomoko) Hayes, Sarah Hayes, Laura Salidivar, and Mark Salidivar; and one great grandchild: Haylie Henske. She is also survived by brothers E.F. Sullivan III (Joan), and Robert (Marilyn) Sullivan, both of Navasota, and a sister, Carol (Granville) Dutton of Dallas.

The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to Houston Hospice – El Campo for its kind help with Marianne’s final journey. Memorial gifts may be made to the Markham United Methodist Church, or to Houston Hospice – El Campo.

Visitation will be Friday, November 15 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16 at 10:00 am at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

F. J. Hejtmanek Funeral Services Set For Thursday

Funeral services have been scheduled for F. J. Hejtmanek 74, of Route 1, Palacios for 2 p. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Hejtmanek, a longtime country resident, died Tuesday at Highland, Texas. He was born in Czechoslovakia and was a retired farmer.

The Rev. Gordon Hejl of the Blessing Czech Brethren Church will officiate at the rites and interment will be in Hawley Cemetery.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Albina Hejtmanek of Palacios, four daughters, Mrs. Henry Jurek and Mrs. Hubert Jurek of Pasadena, Mrs. A. J. Lostak of Highland and Mrs. Ottmar Schimek of Bay City; two sons, Frank of Pasadena and George of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Macek of Rosenberg and Mrs. Marie Fojtik of Czechoslovakia.

Wilburn Ben Heller, 53, Succumbs

Wilburn Ben Heller, 53, of Markham, died Monday in Matagorda General Hospital. Rosary will be held at 8 p. m. Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home and mass at 10 a. m. Tuesday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Father Joe Harnala, will officiate at all services.

He is survived by his wife, La Verne Smith Heller; two sons, Henry Lawrence and Wilbur Howard, both of Markham; one sister, Mrs. George Kusey, of Weimar; two brothers, Oscar of Weimar and Frank of Dallas.

Donald E. Heyen

A memorial service for Donald E. Heyen, 56, of Blessing is scheduled for 2 p. m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Blessing with the Rev. Ron Lyn and the Rev. Mitch Sauls officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing.

Mr. Heyen was born Jan. 1, 1937 in Colfax, N. D. to Dick and Dorothy Nelson Heyen and died Sept. 8, 1993 at his residence.

Survivors include: his wife, Marion Heyen of Blessing; three sons, Mitch Heyen of Blessing, Randal Heyen of Fort Worth and Donald Heyen Jr. of Alaska; four daughters, Debra Horton of Fargo, N. D., Melissa and Melody Heyen of Fort Worth and Cheryl Watkins of Springtown; five brothers, Darrell and Leonard Heyen of Colfax, N. D., James and Dickie Heyen of Walcott, N. D., Lloyd Heyen of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; a sister, Arlene Cooper of Poway, Calif.; 25 grandchildren, 22 foster children; a stepson, Robert Anderson Jr. of Granbury and two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Lowery of Palacios and Beverly Hilli of Granbury.

Father of  Claud Hickey Passes Away Saturday

Mr. Charlie Augusta Hickey of Rock Island, Texas, passed away at a Columbus hospital at 2:55 p. m. Saturday, July 26. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Markham today, July 28, at 2:00 p. m., with Rev. Leslie LeGrand officiating. He will be assisted by Rev. R. E. Black, and Rev. G. G. Cecil.

Mr. Hickey is survived by his wife, of Rock Island, three sons, Clyde of Berwick, La., Ray of Markham and Claude of Bay City. A brother, Earl H. Hickey of Yoakum also survives.

Pall bearers will be Alvin Sparks, Clyde Everett Farthing, Bill Taylor, Larry Lynch, Cecil Owens and Harry Townsend.

Taylor Brothers are in charge of arrangements and interment will be in Hawley Cemetery.

Mattie Irene Hickey

HICKEY, Mrs. Mattie Irene, age 80, of Markham died Tuesday afternoon in Matagorda General Hospital. She was born Dec. 10, 1890 in Des Moines, Iowa. Services will be held at 3 p. m. Thursday at the Markham Methodist Church, the Rev. Alfred DeKunder officiating. Interment will be in the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. She had been a Markham resident for 15 years. Survivors include three sons, James Clyde Hickey, of Ameli, La., C. C. Hickey of Bay City, Ray Hickey of Midfield; one sister, Mrs. Willa Clements of California; one brother, Lou Wilson of California; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. June 4, 1949 – December 16, 2013

Melvin Joe Hickl, 64, of Brenham, passed away December 16, 2013, in Houston, Texas.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Bastrop Christian Outreach Center.

Burial followed at Oakhill Cemetery in Smithville.

Joe was born June 4, 1949 to Edward L. and Martha (Kristek) Hickl.

He was preceded in death by his father; and step-brother, Thomas Houston, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela; mother, Martha (Kristek) (Hickl) Houston; children, Traci Jo Hickl Jackson and husband Michael, and Randall Parr Hickl and wife Emily; four granddaughters, Ryen, Armaris, Camille and Liv Sophia; one brother, Edward Hickl II and wife Barbara; and sister, Cyndy Hickl Hahn and husband Charles.

Quang Minh Hoang, 76, of Palacios passed away on March 8, 2014 at his home. He was born October 15, 1937 in Vietnam to the late Oanh and Dieu Ho Hoang.

Quang is survived by his wife Tin Hoang; daughters Canh Nguyen and My-Dung Hoang of Wichita Falls, Texas and Mythuy Cieslar of the Woodlands, Texas; son Minh Hoang of Houston; sisters Tinh Hoang and Mia Hoang of Vietnam and 5 grandchildren.

Rosaries will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Palacios Funeral Home. William Henry Hobbs, 82, of Bay City passed away July 31, 2013. He was born June 10, 1931 in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late Melvin Hobbs and Nell Fisher Hobbs. He proudly served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict, retired after many years as a Petroleum Engineer and was a former member of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce.

His wife of 52 years, Peggy Hobbs, preceded him in death.

Survivors include: daughter, Amanda Smith; son, Keith Hobbs; brother, Don Hobbs and wife Eileen; sister-in-law, Carmen Guidry; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren

He passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 in Beaumont, Texas. He was born May 15, 1957 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Clive has left behind: a daughter, Shannon Hockett and her mother, Susan Graham of Grapevine; sisters, Donna Hockett and Hazel Guillen of Blessing, and Mary Main of Freeport; and a brother, Harold Hockett of Blessing.

He is preceded in death by: his mother, Winnie L. Hockett; and father, Clive Clyde Hockett.

Jack Hodge, 63, of Blessing, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 after a short illness.

He was born December 31, 1949 in Lake City, South Carolina to the late Layton and Mable (Geddings) Hodge. He was a Baptist and a retired boilermaker, a veteran who served in the Vietnam War, was a Mason, and enjoyed his hobby of golf.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Hodge of Blessing; son, Brock Hodge of Iberville, Mississippi; sisters, Rae Ward (John) of Summerville, South Carolina, Sara McKnight of Hartsville, South Carolina, and Mary Weaver of Hartsville,

South Carolina; brothers, Dean Hodge (Brenda) and Allen Hodge (Janet), of Sumter, South Carolina; and grandchildren, Chloe, Mariah, Brianna, Skyleigh, Mark, and Sonja Hodge.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dwayne Hodge; sisters, Christine Lovett and Corrine Weaver; and brothers, Buddy Hodge and Richard Hodge.

Gladys Elizabeth Hoffman

Gladys Elizabeth Hennessey Hoffman, 88, of Bay City passed away October 30, 2013. She was born September 1, 1925 in Highlands, NJ to the late Thomas Hennessey & Frances Mount Hennessey. She was a retired program analyst for the Air Assault and Special Missions AV Weapon Systems (Harrier) program executive office. She was known as the “Grandma” of the AV-8B Plus Harrier Wing of the US Navy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie J. Hoffman and sons John L. Hoffman and Robert E. Hoffman. Survivors include sons Paul Hoffman and Michael Hoffman, 6 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He worked for Bay City ISD for many years and for the El Campo Post Office.

Evelyn Holland

(March 25, 1926 - December 17, 2013)

Evelyn Holland, 87, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on December 17, 2013. Evelyn was born on March 25, 1926 to Harold A. and Ella H. Olson Hansen of Davevang, TX and she was their only child.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Faith and her husband of 56 years, Robert E. Holland, who died in 2011. Survivors include her son Glenn Holland; grandson Sherman Redd; granddaughter Melissa Willy and 4 great grandchildren Nicholas Willy, Samira Redd, Aryannh Redd and Aaden Redd.

She was a good wife, mother and friend to many. She was also a friend to animals and supported many causes. Both she and her husband did nice things for others, but never advertised it. She was a voracious reader and had a small book club. In her earlier years she was an accomplished seamstress, pianist and organist as well as an avid orchid grower and an excellent cook. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bay City for many years until she was unable to go. The world was a better place with her in it and those who knew her best will miss her the most.

Her family would like to thank a few people for being so kind and supportive to her. Klara Rowland for her encouragement and cookie baking, Boogie and Emily Svoboda for their friendship to us and their devotion to both Evelyn and Robert and to Joy Wernley who was like a second daughter to my mother and has been a great help in ways too numerous to mention.

BAY CITY - Barbara Lorraine Savage Stell Holloway, 86 (October 23, 1926-August 16, 2013) passed away peacefully at her home on the Pitchfork Ranch surrounded by her daughters.

She came from a long ranching heritage and received the Cattleman of the Year Award in 1999 as did her mother and father in previous years. She was an avid supporter of the youth of Matagorda through the MCFLA Heifer Show & Sale. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City & Susanna Wesley Class, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Republic of Texas, and Cattlemen's & Cattlewomen's Associations of Matagorda County. She was known throughout the community for her kind heart & generosity and was loved by many.

She is preceded in death by her parents Eva Robbins & Hamilton Savage, Sr., her brother H.W. Savage, Jr., her husbands Howard W. Stell & Edwin F. Holloway.

Mrs. Holmans died Sept. 2, 1997.

She was born in Nacogdoches on Sept. 29, 1909, and was married to William Palmer Holmans on March 17, 1933.

Mrs. Holmans was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Allandale Garden Club and the United Methodist Women's Lydia Circle.

Martha Marie Holub

(January 15, 1931 - December 19, 2013)

Our precious wife, Mother, and Jaju (Grandma), Martha Marie Vacek Holub, passed away at Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas, on December 19, 2013. Martha was born on January 15, 1931, in East Bernard, Texas, to the late Rudolph and Lucy Viktorin Vacek and was the youngest of ten children.

She attended Holy Cross Catholic School in East Bernard and graduated from East Bernard High School. She attended banking college in Houston and was employed by Union State Bank in East Bernard. Martha married Fred Paul Holub on March 29, 1952. She was an inspiration to many as she survived ovarian cancer found after the birth of their only child, Sandra, in November of 1954.

Martha was a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Through the years, she served on Church Council and held various offices in the Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society, KJZT, and KJT. She served on the School Board and Finance committee and was active in the PTA for Holy Cross School. She worked with the American Cancer Society and served as chairman of the Matagorda County Relay for Life. She was a member of the Lioness Club and the VFW Auxiliary.

Her caring, joyful spirit was a gift to her family and to all who knew her. Over the years, she enjoyed many hobbies, including water skiing and spending time with family and friends at Lake Travis, bowling, playing cards and dominoes, fishing and crabbing, and attending sporting events, especially those involving her beloved grandson, Christopher.

Martha is survived by her husband of 61 years, Fred Paul Holub; her daughter, Sandra Holub Conlan, of Austin, Texas; and her grandson, Christopher Paul Holub Conlan, and his wife, Caitlin Paver Conlan, of Dallas, Texas. Martha is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home on Friday, December 27, 2013, from 5:30-8pm, with the Vigil service and recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 6pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City, with Father Greg Korenek as celebrant. The Rite of Committal will be at 3pm at Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard, Texas.

Pallbearers include her Godchildren, Edward Vacek; Janet Vacek Koening; Linda Vacek Janik; Bill Vacek; Karen Vacek Machann; Lisa Vacek Stafford; John Muskiet; and Steve Sliva.

Richard Carman Holzaepfel
March 13, 1930 – February 18, 2014

Matagorda, Richard Carman Holzaepfel, age 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Tuesday, February 18, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Carman was a proud member of the United States Navy for four years. He held numerous positions, including Post Commander and Quartermaster of VFW Post #4459 in Matagorda, TX. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1987, with 30+ years of service. He was involved in multiple community service organizations, including the Lion’s Club and Telephone Pioneers of America.

He was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska to the late Chris Holzaepfel and Clara Davis Holzaepfel.

He is also preceded in death by his sister, Lois Jean Todish; stepfather, Dennis Watkins; and his beloved wife of 53 years, Norma Beth Holzaepfel.

He is survived by his daughters, Jo Lynn Sutton and husband Thomas, Terry Wyatt and husband Leslie, Toni Steck and husband Gary; 10 grandchildren, Nathan and wife Janet, Tiffany and husband Larry, Jenny and husband Sal, Eric and wife Brittany, Amber, Carman and wife Rebecca, Kelly and husband Aaron, Holly and husband Kris, James, Brent and wife Emily; 18 great-grandchildren; half-brothers, Stan Holzaepfel and wife Shirley and Carl Holzaepfel and wife Lynda. He is also survived by other numerous beloved family members and friends.

The family will receive friends for visitation at First Christian Church, Bay City, Texas on February 24, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services following at 1:30 p.m.

Interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery.

After Interment, full military honors will be provided by Bay City VFW Post #2438.

BLESSING - Sheila Horton, age 60, passed away February 24, 2014.

She was born July 28, 1953 in Penn Yan, New York to Kermit and Lois Ayrault Parson.

Rupert Milton "Rusty" Hughes passed from this life and into the loving arms of God on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 2:10 p.m. in the Audie Murphy Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

He was a decorated Korean War veteran of the United States Army having been awarded the Purple Heart and 4 Silver Stars by the country he loved and protected.

He passed peacefully in the presence of his family who loved him dearly.

He is preceded in death by: his mother, Amanda Jane Hughes of Bay City; father, William Otto Hughes of Sweeny; sister, Markie Howell of Sacramento, California; and brothers Henry and Dooley Hughes of Bay City.

Funeral services for Samuel N. Hughes were held Saturday, January 30, at 1:30 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Buck Mathis of San Antonio and Rev. Van Dickens, of the Church of God of Prophecy, officiating. Interment followed in the Hawley Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for 31 years, he was born March 12, 1888 in Butler, Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Franklin Hughes. A veteran of World War I, he passed away Monday, January 25 at the Veterans Hospital in Houston.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nancy Hughes of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Rinks and Mrs. Lillie Mae Dove of San Antonio; one step son, Woodroe Sellers, of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Lillie Wayne Hooford of San Antonio, David Monroe Sellers of Hereford, Johnny Lee Rinks, Wanda Marie and Juanita Mae Sellers of San Antonio; and two nieces, Mrs. Estelle Caamano and Mrs. Irene Brown of Houston.

Hiler William Hull

Graveside services for Hiler William Hull, 76, of Tide Water Oaks, Palacios, will be held 2 p. m. Monday at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, with Verne DiPasca officiating.

Visitation is scheduled for 9 a. m. to noon Sunday at Palacios Funeral Home, Palacios.

Mr. Hull was born Jan. 1, 1917 in Detroit, Texas, to Arch G. and Verna Tyler Hull and died Sept. 9, 1993 at Veteran’s Administration Center, Houston.

A resident of Palacios since 1969, Mr. Kovar is a veteran of the U. S. Army, 141st Infantry Co. C. He is also a past VFW post commander.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Lenore Hull of Palacios; two sons, H. W. Hull Jr. of Bozeman, Mont. and Robert E. Hull of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Ruby Winfield of Galveston; a brother, Weldon Hull of San Antonio and nine grandchildren.

PALACIOS—Earl F. Humphreys, 94, of Palacios, died Sunday, June 8, 1997.

He was born June 26, 1902, to the late Joe L. and Mellie Wiggs Humphreys.

Survivor: brother, Judge Joe Bailey Humphreys of Dallas.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. today at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, the Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating.

Leo Raymond Hunt

Leo Raymond Hunt, 82, of Rosharon, Texas, died November 30, 1997 in Webster, Texas. He was born in Citrus Grove on October 7, 1915 to Albert Gerrard Hunt and Iona Jane Corporon Hunt. He was a resident of Rosharon for 57 years, where he was a member of the Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department and a retired Rosharon postmaster. He was a WWII Navy veteran and had attained the rank of Chief Machinist's Mate. Survivors were: wife, Norma Ruth Hunt of Rosharon; sons, Raymond Lynn Hunt of Madisonville and Morris Wayne Hunt of Nevada; daughters, Sue Ann Marasckin of Manvel and Connie Ellen Brown of Lufkin; sister, Lera Lucille Hunt Collins of Angleton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at 11 a. m. on December 3, 1997 at Hawley Cemetery with Carolyn Del Bello officiating.

PALACIOS - Mary Jean Majors Hurley, 76, of Palacios, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. She was born May 10, 1937 in Mississippi to the late Artemous and Elsie Mae Tubbs Majors. She was a Methodist and a homemaker.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Linda Faro (Danny) of Indiana; sons, Terry Hurley (Sandy) of Russell, Illinois, Tony Hurley (Mike) of Seattle, Washington, and Tim Hurley (Janet) of Bay City; sister, Arvella Cox of Amory, Mississippi; 9 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Drexell Hurley; step-son, Bob Hurley; grandson, Corey Hurley; 1 sister; and 2 brothers.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Anna Hurta Passes Away Sunday Afternoon

Mrs. Anna Hurta, a former longtime resident of Midfield, passed away at the Matagorda General Hospital Sunday afternoon. The Midfield Community was saddened by her death and extend deepest sympathy to her family.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Anna Hurta Conducted Tuesday

Funeral services were held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Anna Hurta, 78-year-old Midfield resident. Officiant was the Rev. Joseph Barton.

Mrs. Hurta passed away Sunday at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Burial was in Hawley Cemetery, with Taylor Brothers in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hurta is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Roberts of Bay City, Mrs. John Sedlacek of Gonzales, and Mrs. A. V. Bosak of Midfield; four sons, Edwin Hurta of El Maton; Louis Hurta of Bay City, and Alfon Hurta and Frank Hurta, both of Midfield.

Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Rudolph Kalenda of Robstown, and one brother, John Mikus of Temple.

Pall bearers were Ed Matura, Henry Knebel, Alphonse Siptak, Edmonds Siptak, Joe Lucas, Frank Taska, and F. J. Hejtmanek.

Annie Mae Hurta

Annie Mae Hurta, 76, of Midfield, Texas died February 19, 2001 at Bay Villa Nursing Home in Bay City. She was born February 28, 1924 in Sealy, Texas to the late John J. and Emily Esterak Swinky. Mrs. Hurta was a member of Midfield Community Church, a resident of Midfield since 1973, a member of and Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Cecil Lee Post #649, a member of the Midfield Extension Homemakers Club, and was very active in 4-H Clubs of Matagorda Co. In 1985 she received the Homemaker of the year Award, and in May of 1994 she received Certificate of Appreciation from the Midfield Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, in March of 1996 she received a 50 year members Award of Texas Association for Family and Community Education.

Survivors include: daughter, LaVerne Hicks of Midfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Marvin and Nona Hurta of Ashby and Lawrence Hurta of Midfield; sisters, Wilma Vavra of El Maton, Frances Dusek and husband Ray of East Bernard, Doris Johs and husband Sonny of Blessing, Margaret Fehmel and husband Bill of Bay City, Geraldine Strelec and husband Edwin of Edna, and Patricia Scott and husband Gary of Clear Lake, Texas; brothers, Edwin Swinky and wife Helen of Bay City and Johnnie Swinky and wife Loreen of Florida; eight grandchildren, Lynda Brooks of Edna, Brenda Stewart of Tekamah, Neb., Kimberly Hurta of Bay City, Wendy Saha and her husband Eric of Blessing, Jason Hurta of Edna, Chad Hurta of Van Vleck, Russell Hicks and his wife Rebecca of Aransas Pass, and Ashley Hurta of Bay City; eight great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Priscilla Hurta-Skalicky of Edna, Texas; sister-in-law, Edith Hurta of Midfield; and brother-in-law, A. W. Hurta and his wife Totsy of Midfield and Bill Herrin of Palacios. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Edward Hurta, Sr. in 1995 by her son Edwin Edward Hurta, Jr. in 1992, her two sisters, Louise Knebel Boling and Emily Herrin and her brother, Bennie Swinky.

Funeral Services will be 2 p. m. Friday, February 23, 2001 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Adamson officiating. Eulogist will be Ona Lee Pierce. Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. The family will receive friends at Taylor Bros. Thursday from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. Pallbearers will be Russell Hicks, Jason Hurta, Chad Hurta, Eric Saha, Ralph Petersen and Bill Hurta. Memorials may be made to the Midfield EMS or Midfield Community Church.

Edwin E. Hurta

Edwin E. Hurta, 83, of Midfield passed away October 8, 1995 at his residence. He was born July 1, 1912 in Hobson, Texas to Frank and Anna Mikus Hurta. Mr. Hurta had formerly lived in El Maton for 32 years and had lived in Midfield for the past 22 years.

He was a longtime farmer in El Maton and Midfield. For many years he was the bookkeeper, secretary/treasurer, as well as a board member of the Blessing Farmer’s Co-op. He was also very active in the leadership of the 4-H Clubs of Matagorda County and the Matagorda County Extension Service, being voted Outstanding Cotton Farmer in 1959, a former member of the Matagorda County Farm Bureau, a Veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy, a member of the American Legion Cecil Lee Post # 649 in Blessing, member of the S. P. J. S. T. Lodge, and a member of the Czech Brethren Church, but in recent years attended the Midfield Community Church.

Mr. Hurta married Annie Mae Swinky on November 19, 1941 in Midfield, Texas and they were to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary on November 19.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Tuesday, October 10, 1995 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Alfred Toerne officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

Pallbearers include, Frank Hurta, Jr., Bill Hurta, Sam Hurta, A. V. Bosak, Milton Vavra, Jr., Donnie Knebel, Sonny Strelec and Randall Hicks.

Mr. Hurta is survived by his wife, Annie Mae Swinky Hurta of Midfield; by one daughter, LaVerne Hicks of Midfield; by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Marvin W. and Nona Hurta of the Ashby Community and Lawrence Hurta of Midfield; by a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Hurta of Edna; by a brother and sister-in-law, Alphon and Totsy Hurta of Midfield; by a sister-in-law Edith Hurta of Midfield; by eight grandchildren, Brenda Stewart of El Campo, Lynda Brooks of Odessa, Jason Hurta of Edna, Kimberly D. Hurta of Bay City, Chad W. Hurta of Van Vleck, Wendy Saha of Blessing, Russell Hicks of Midfield, and Ashley Hurta of Tidewater Oaks; by five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edwin E. Hurta, Jr. December 28, 1992, by three sisters, Sophie Roberts, Emma Sedlacek, and Albina Bosak, and by two brothers, Louis Hurta and Frank Hurta, Sr.

Frank J. "Sonny" Hurta

Funeral services for F. J. "Sonny" Hurta, 68, of Midfield will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Olson officiating. Burial will be in Midfield Cemetery.

Mr. Hurta was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Sample, Texas, to Frank Joe and Anna Mikus Hurta and died Aug. 7, 1988, at his residence.

A resident of Midfield for 62 years, he was a member of Blessing Masonic Lodge 411 A. F. & A. M. and the Midfield Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Richardson Hurta of Midfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Joe and D'Ann Hurta Jr. of Bryan, Bill Hurta of Bay City; three daughters, Priscilla Wayman and Susie Hamlin, both of Bay City, and Gay Barrett of Clute; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alphonse W. and Totsy Hurta and Edwin and Anna Mae Hurta, all of Midfield; 11 grandchildren, Terri Jean McKinley, Shelton Hebert, Jr., Jared Hurta, Rachel Hurta, Kristi Hamlin, Bruce Hurta, Bryan Hurta, Brian Ottis, Shaw Ottis, Jeffrey Hurta and Sean Barrett; and one great-grandson, Christopher McKinley.

3 Year Old Tot Has Head Crushed Under Maintainer
Falls From Machine Being Operated by Father, A. W. Hurta

Helen Louise Hurta, three year-old-daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Hurta of Midfield, was instantly killed yesterday when she fell from a county-owned maintainer being operated by her father near her home and the wheels passed over her head.

According to information received here the child desired to ride a short distance with her father and climbed into the machine with him. In some way she fell out and her absence was not noticed at once.

Funeral arrangements are being held in abeyance until word can be received from her grandmother, Mrs. N. E. Hurta, of Gonzales, and an uncle Louis A. Hurta, now in the Army in California.

She was the only child of her parents.

L. A. Hurta, 54, of Midfield Dies

Louis Alvin Hurta, 54, passed away Monday afternoon at Matagorda General Hospital.

Hurta, a veteran of World War II, was a rancher in Midfield.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. in the Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John J. Bravenec of the Czech Brethren Church officiating.

Interment will be in the Hawley Cemetery.

Hurta is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sophia Roberts of Bay City, Mrs. Emma Sedlacek of Gonzales and Mrs. Albina Bosak of Midfield.

He also leaves three brothers, Edwin Hurta of El Maton, A. W. Hurta of Midfield and Frank Hurta also of Midfield.

Pallbearers will be A. V. Bosak Jr., Lawrence Hurta, Sammy Hurta, William Sedlacek, Frankie Joe Hurta, Bill Hurta, Marvin Hurta, Edwin Hurta Jr., Earl Sedlacek and Clifton Sedlacek of Bay City.
