Mrs. Jackson was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Bay City to George Calvin and Pearl Callis Woods and died May 13, 1994. She was a member of the Baptist church and the Order of Eastern Star Olive Leaf Chapter 219. Survivors include a brother, Earl Woods; a niece, Sheryl Woods; an aunt, Laura Matthews; a nephew Terrance Woods; and a special friend, Joe Garcia. Vernon, Texas, brothers: William Coleman of Deport, Texas, Donald Coleman of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeffrey Coleman of Bryan, Texas, and Rickey Coleman of Bay City, Sisters: Alice Baker of Kleamath Falls, Oregon, Marie Henry of Sour Lake, Texas, Jo Helen Hutson of Cookville, Texas, Ruby Wendelken of El Dorado Estates, and Sharon Lewis of Bay City. She is also survived by 9 grand children and 3 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Billie Faye Harbour. This neighborhood was shocked last Sunday evening upon hearing of the sudden and untimely death of Earl James. He was taken sick Saturday morning, but thinking his condition was not serious, the doctor was not summoned until Saturday night, when Earl seemed worse. Dr. Moore was called, finding the boy in much pain, the doctor decided an operation was necessary at once, and returned to Palacios to get Dr. Wagner and Elliott, who operated on the lad Sunday afternoon. Earl's condition was such that no physician could help and he answered the Master's calling at 6 p. m. Sunday. The doctors pronounced it acute appendicitis. Joseph Earl James was born in Bosky [Bosque] county, Texas, 1898, and died at his home near Palacios, April 26, 1911, being 13 years of age at the time of his death. Earl was a bright, lovable christian boy and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves a mother, father and brother to mourn his departure, besides other relatives and friends. A sister preceded him to the glory world some time ago and today they are walking hand in hand on the golden streets. The remains were taken to Hawley cemetery for burial. Rev. Israel, of Palacios, spoke a few words at the grave. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and point them to Him who heals all our wounds.
Dear Earl thou hast left us Palacios Beacon, April 28, 1911 Earl, the twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. James, of this city, died Sunday evening at 6 o'clock. His illness was of short duration having been taken sick on the preceding Friday. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, and the remains laid to rest at the Hawley burying ground. The sympathy of all the people of this city goes out to the sorrowing family in their loss and affliction.

Funeral services for William Allen “Chick” James, 68, of Markham, a former resident of Palacios, were held at 10 a. m. Friday, February 1, at Taylor Brothers Funeral chapel in Bay City. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. Born May 29, 1894 in Hawley, James was pronounced dead on arrival at Matagorda General Hospital Wednesday morning, January 30. He had been ill for some time with a heart condition. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth James, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Guynes and Mrs. Albert Watzlavik, all of Markham and five sons, Jodie of Houston; W. L., Cecil, Danny and Roy of Markham.

Edward “Eddie” G. Jecmenek, 84, of Bay City passed away on Friday, December 14, 2012. He was born on March 12, 1928 in Ellinger, TX to the late Edward Charles & Eleonora Hruska Jecmenek. Eddie graduated from LaGrange High School where he was the class Valedictorian. He continued his education at Blinn Junior College. While at Blinn, he was a four-sport letterman, and received the “Little American” award for sports. Eddie then earned his Bachelors degree at Sam Houston State University. He completed his education by earning his Masters degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. Eddie began his teaching and coaching career at Van Vleck High School. He then came to Bay City High School and taught science and continued coaching. Eddie became an Asst. Principal & Principal serving Bay City High School, Hilliard Junior High, and McAllister Junior High Campuses. In 1969, Eddie became the Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs for BCISD, a position he held for 22 years. He retired in 1990 with 39 years of dedicated service to education. Eddie was a teacher for the Men’s Wesley Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church of Bay City. He also served as a coach for Bay City Girls Softball Association, was a Master Mason, and a member of the Gulf Coast Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Jessica Jecmenek of Bay City; 2 daughters: Jessica Elizabeth Stone & husband Philip of Bay City, and Eddie Kaye Jecmenek of Sugar Land; son: Joseph McWilliams of Seattle, WA; 3 grandchildren: Amanda Elizabeth Slater & husband Charles of Brazoria, Klaudie Kaye Stone of Huntsville, and Cassidy Leigh McWilliams of Dallas; Eddie was preceded in death by his parents and brother Leon Jecmenek. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Monday, December 17, 2012 at First United Methodist Church of Bay City with Rev. Jeff Gantz and Rev. Pauline Storey officiating. Graveside services for Julian Ray Jenkins, 51, of Houston, are scheduled for 3 p. m. Thursday, March 2, 1995, at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Mr. Jenkins was born May 31, 1943, in Augusta, Ga., to Julian A. and Ruby Jean Munkers Jenkins and died Feb. 25, 1995, at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. A member of the Baptist church, he was a resident of Houston for the past 20 years and a musician by trade. He graduated from Palacios High School as valedictorian in 1961. He received his degree from Texas Tech University and went through R. O. T. C. as wing commander. He was gifted with many musical talents. At the age of 6, he began playing the piano for Sunday School in the beginners’ department at First Baptist Church in Palacios. At the age of 12, he became the church organist until he left for college. He was pianist for College Heights Baptist at Lubbock and served as choir director at Reece Air Force Base. After graduation, he moved to Austin and did some college work at The University of Texas. He spent 30 years playing the piano or organ full time for various churches. He cherished the memory of playing the organ and having Mr. John Richards play his fiddle for services at First Baptist Church in Palacios. He worked as a buyer for Scarborough’s and Dillard’s in Austin and San Antonio, all the while serving as organist, pianist or choir director. He spent years working and playing the piano in Houston and five years playing at all Furrs Cafeterias in Lubbock. Mr. Jenkins had been ill about three years. The last two years he was unable to work, but was still playing music up to three weeks before his death. He was a loving son and held his parents in high regards. He brought joy to all he met, and never met one he could not love and have compassion for. Survivors include his parents Earl and Ruby Jean Jenkins Adams of Blessing; two brothers, Mark Adams of San Antonio and Tommy Winzer of Houston; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Julian A. Jenkins on Jan. 24, 1973. Honorary pallbearers are Fred Law, Joe Rowland, Fred Huitt, Fred Wesselski, Robbie Woodard and Kirby Dismukes. In lieu of usual contributions, donations may be made to the music department of First Baptist Church of Palacios or First Baptist Church of Bay City. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Chester Johnson, 97, of Bay City passed away at the Seabreeze Nursing Home Jan. 28, 1996. He was born July 29, 1898 in Columbus, Texas in Colorado County to Lewis and Gennie Scott Johnson. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 1 at 11 a. m. at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at East View Cemetery in Bay City. Rev. Johnson was born July 11, 1900 in Markham to the late Napoleon and Siless Johnson and he died Sept. 16, 1992 at Sweeny House in Sweeny. He was a longtime resident of Bay City who was a member of the Baptist church and Gulf Coast Masonic Lodge #272. Rev. Johnson pastored Mount Zion Baptist Church in Van Vleck for 17 years. He was a pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Cedar Lane for approximately 37 years and retired earlier this year. Survivors include a daughter, Hattie M. King of Bay City; a son, Nathaniel Johnson of Evanston, Ill; 10 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews and friends, including the St. Mark Baptist Church family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Dugard Johnson; five sisters, Mamie, Gertrude, Carrie, Ruby and Sadie and three brothers, Milton, Rivers and Lewis. Pallbearers will be the deacons of St. Mark Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers are the ministers of the Matagorda County Ministerial Alliance. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

He was born December 03, 1941 in El Campo, Texas to the late Erich Erhardt Johs, Sr. and Lenadene Ramsey Johs. Erich is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sandy, of La Ward, his son, David A. Johs of Bay City and one sister, Wanda Foster, also of Bay City. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Alexandra Claire Blande (James) of Mississippi, Victoria Jane Johs of Lubbock, and Brandon Shane Cornett (Alicia) of Bay City. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6pm until 8pm Wednesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. The Funeral Service will held Thursday at 10:00am at First Baptist Church in Lolita, Texas with Rev. Dennis Phariss officiating. Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas. Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 15, 1934 in Richmond to the late Hallard and Esther Lemons and she died Aug. 18, 1992 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was a teacher at Tenie Holmes Elementary School for 12 years and a member of the Texas State Teachers’ Association and Classroom Teachers. She was also the musical director at Enterprise Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones received her education from the A. G. Hilliard School, Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University (then Houston College for Negroes) and the University of Southern California. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Horace Jones; three daughters, Devette Lorraine Jones of Houston, Esther Mary Jones of Anchorage, Alaska and Horeis Jones of San Diego, Calif.; one son, Chawyer Kent Jones of Houston; a daughter-in-law, Tina Jones; stepgrandson, Chad; two brothers, Charles Lemons of Richmond and the Rev. Funeral service for Mrs. Catherine Whitley Jones, age 69, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, July 1st, at 11 a. m., at the Bethel Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. L. C. Cunningham, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Friday until 9 P. M. in the Chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Saturday from 10 til 11 A. M. at the church. Mrs. Jones was born March 20, 1926, in Bay City, to Marshall Whitley and Amy Mills Whitley and died June 23, 1995, at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Gloria (& Albert) Tucker of San Antonio, and Mrs. Marilyn (& James) Ellis of Houston. Also two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jimmie (& Patricia) Jones, and Harold Jones, all of Houston. One step-daughter, Mrs. Irvy Stroud of Edna, and one step-son and daughter-in-law, Billy Joe (& Brenda) Jones of Detroit, Michigan. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Almeda Irons of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Dorothy Taylor of Bay City, and two brothers, Marshall Whitley, Jr. of Bay City, and Melvin Whitley of Phoenix, Arizona. Also one paternal aunt, Mrs. Ida Whitley Hayes of Bay City, 4 grandchildren and 8 step-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L. E. Jones, and two sisters, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Baugh and Mrs. Loreace Oliver. She was born in Galveston, Texas, Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1967, to Richard Eaton and Alta Mae Jones Eaton, and died Monday, February 6, 1996, in Bay City. Survivors include her father, Richard Eaton and a daughter, Ry’Keisha NiRee, both of Bay City. Also seven sisters, Eddie Marie, Alta Faye, Shirley Jean, Sheila Redette, Betty Loraine and Vicky Renee, all of Bay City, and Sarah Woodbury of Markham; and six brothers, Bobby Ray of Hawaii, Richard Keith of Richmond, Carl Lee of Wharton, A. C., Lawrence Troy and Nathaniel. Dana was preceded in death by her mother, Alta Mae Jones Eaton, May 12, 1971, and one brother, Charles Jones Eaton, Feb. 24, 1971. Active pallbearers will include Ernest Austin, Troy Davidson, Stevie Franklin, Timothy Hayes, Derrik Johnson, Leon Johnson and Jerome Sanford. Nov. 28, 1923 in Pledger, Tx. She passed away May 1, 2001 in Katy,
Tx. She had been a resident of Palacios for 45 years and had resided
in Houston for the past 15 years. She is survived by her husband,
Allen W. Jones of Katy; two sons, Edwin Leon Mosier, Jr. of Elkhart,
Tx. and Charles Mosier of Dallas; a daughter, Dortha Ann Hamm of
Bellmead, Tx; two stepsons, Dwayne Jones of Willis, Tx. and Dennis

Jeanette (Skinner) Jones, 81, a long time resident of Friendswood, Texas passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013. She was born on September 12, 1931 in Navasota, Texas to Fred Skinner and Muriel (Sampson) Skinner. Jeanette graduated from Lutcher Stark High School in Orange, Texas in 1949. She married Edward M. Jones, Jr. in Orange, Texas on May 14, 1954. Jeanette is survived by: her husband of 58 years, Edward M. Jones, Jr; sons, Edward “Skipper” Jones III and wife, Jane, William Clay Jones and wife Chris and David Andrew Jones and wife Micki; and her daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Jones Wallace and husband David; and five grandchildren. Walter Jones, Jr., 74, of Houston, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston. He was a veteran of World War II and a former resident of Bay City. He is survived by one son, Walter Jones, III of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Beatrice Hyde of Bay City; one grandson and three nieces. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p. m. at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. L. R. James officiating. Interment will be at Eastview Cemetery with Eddie Griggs, Buster Henry, Robert Griggs, John Hilliard, A. C. Henry, and O. D. Keys serving as pallbearers. Anna Mae Hejtmanek Jurek, of Pasadena, went to be with her Lord January 31, 1998. Her husband of 62 years, Henry E. Jurek, Sr., preceded her in death on July 1, 1995. She was born on January 4, 1914, in Rosenberg, Texas, the eldest of six children born to Frank and Albina Hejtmanek. She grew up in El Maton, Texas, and married Henry on October 30, 1932. In 1942 they moved to Pasadena where Henry worked for Champion Paper for 35 years. A Charter member of the Pasadena Brethren Church, she served faithfully, and particularly enjoyed teaching Confirmation classes, serving as Christian Sisters president, and organizing the church’s Strawberry Festival booths. In 1990 the Church Women United presented her with the Valiant Woman Award. Anna Mae loved reading, gardening and canning, sewing, and doing for others. She was unfailingly patient and loving, giving of her time, energy, and optimism. In her years of illness, Anna Mae was able to remain at home with the devoted care giving of her son Henry Jr. She is also survived by her son Glenn and wife Robbie of Austin; daughter Patricia Ann and husband James (Mickey) Jones of Deer Park; daughter Alice Marie and husband Ronald Braley of Fayetteville, GA; seven grandchildren; sisters Alice Jurek of South Houston and Martha Jane Schimek of Bay City, Texas; brother George Hejtmanek of Ashby, Texas; and sister-in-law Alice Marie Hejtmanek of Pasadena. She was preceded in death by her husband and a granddaughter. Special thanks to Mary Starling for her home health care. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p. m. Monday, Feb. 2. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, Pasadena Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Jim Hickman and the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Henry E. Jurek Sr., 84, of Pasadena, went to be with his Lord Saturday, July 1, 1995. He was born December 29, 1910, in Milam County, Texas, to Steve and Liddie Jurek. He was a loving family man and hard worker, completing 35 years as a pipefitter for Champion Paper Company. He was a charter member of the Pasadena Brethren Church and served on the Board of Elders. Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anna M. Jurek; sons Henry E. Jurek Jr., Pasadena, Glenn and wife Robbie of Austin, Texas; daughter Patricia Ann and husband James E. “Mickey” Jones of Deer Park, and Alice Marie and husband Ronald L. Braley of Fayetteville, Georgia. Seven grandchildren survive him, Jonathan and Sarah Jurek, Deborah, James and Jason Jones, Pamela and Brian Braley. A granddaughter, Laura Braley Williams and her infant, preceded him in death. He is also survived by brothers Hubert Jurek of South Houston, and Eddie Jurek of Orange, Texas, sisters, Lillie Bohuslav of Markham, Della Schneider of Bay City, Texas, Lena Hill of Boling, Texas and Johnnie Mae Myers of Boling, Texas as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
