Lena Maude Pollard Shaffer was born in Dallas, Texas, December 9, 1925, to Irma Jean and Hudson Dixon Pollard and passed from this earth to be with the Lord Jesus on December 21, 2001. She was preceded in death by husband, Gordon Lee Shaffer in 1986, her father in 1973, and her mother in 1993.

Her survivors include: son and daughter-in-law Deon Kirk and Dana Renea Shaffer; granddaughter Leslie; and grandson Jackson, all of Nashville, Tennesee; brother Hudson Donald Pollard of Bay City; brother and sister-in-law D'Janin and Sue Pollard of Alvin; two nieces; three nephews; several grandnieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.

Lena Maude was a retired school teacher and had taught in area schools for many years. She retired from the Van Vleck Independent School District in 1987. Her love of young people, high principles, and ideals made her an asset to any school system. She was a firm teacher who believed one had to have discipline in the classroom in order to teach and learn. This had a positive effect on the lives of many young people of Matagorda County. Watching each student excel made years of teaching worthwhile and rewarding. Maintaining a great rapport with the students was a principal goal. To her, it took a special person to be a teacher, and "Mrs. Shaffer" met the challenge. The evidence of a job well done continued even years after her retirement in the form of letters from grateful students.

Lena Maude's principal focus, notwithstanding her professional accomplishments, remained her devotion to her family, many friends, and Christian faith. No obligation was as important to her as being a Mother and Grandmother, and nothing gave her as much joy. Her friends were those of recent acquaintance and those of a lifetime. No birthday, anniversary or important event was forgotten. No memory of good times past ever faded. All were held dear. Raised by Christian parents, she was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City. She firmly believed that the Bible held the answers to all of life's challenges and mysteries, and fallible as she was, she always turned to God's word for those answers. She literally faced the end of her earthly life with a smile on her face, secure in the knowledge that God sent Jesus to die for the sins of mankind so that we could live forever. She rests with the Lord. Her family and friends miss her sorely, even while rejoicing in the life she led and the life that continues into eternity.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2001 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating.

Interment will follow at
Hawley Cemetery. Family will receive friends at Taylor Bros. Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m.
