Bernice Terry Shannon

Funeral services for Bernice Terry Shannon, 53, of Bay City will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Dr. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing.

Mrs. Shannon was born June 25, 1932, in El Maton to P. P. Terry and Cygred Spoor and died Dec. 13, 1985, on the island of Aruba.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Bay Villa Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Shannon of Bay City; nieces, Mary Sue Estes of Corpus Christi, Della Jo Lowery of Bay City, Jane Bates of Plantersville and Judy Reitz of Denton; and nephews, Percy Carroll of Markham, and Johnny and James Carroll, both of Bay City.

Pallbearers include Fred Law, Bert Huebner, Jimmy Craft, Jimmy Powers, Gerald Rowland and James Harris.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Ministries Center of the First Baptist Church.

Harry Samuel Shannon, 83, of Bay City, passed away on January 11, 2010.

A long time local farmer, Harry was also a Lt. Colonel in the Texas Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and had recently been elected to serve a second term as a Bay City Port Commissioner.

His passing was preceded by: his beloved wife, Berniece Terry Shannon; his father and mother, Baker Lee and Nancy Catherine Shannon; and his aunt, Violet McKnight.

After serving his country in the US Army Cavalry during WWII, he graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. He lived for several years in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and then moved to Bay City, where he farmed rice and other crops for over 50 years.

He served the community as a Boy Scout Troop leader and as President of the Matagorda County Hospital Board for a time. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and then joined the First Baptist Church after marrying Berniece.

Harry is survived by: his brother and sister-in-law, Baker Lee and Nancy Shannon, and many nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation with the family will be held on Friday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Bay City Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating.

Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Harry's family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Bay City.

SHARP

Jackie Carlene Sharp, 66, of Markham passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Spur, Texas on July 30, 1937, to parents, Mike Cager and Opal Juanita Johnson Wade.

She was a very active member of the Bay City Bowling Association, a member of the Pink Ladies Auxillary of Matagorda General Hospital, a member of the American Auxillary-Blessing, and a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City.

She is survived by: her husband, Jim Sharp of Markham; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Margaret Winkles of Bay City and Wade and Linda Sharp of Houston; daughters, Rhonda Mitchell of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Pam Reyes of Sidney, Ohio, and Tennie Mozley of Markham; sisters, Louise Blackerby of Bay City and Tennie and Sal Gatto of Spring; step-children, Jim and Janice Sharp of Austin and Victoria and Mike Shaw of Dallas; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Myrt McKay and brother Bobby Wade.

A visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the Bay City Funeral Home from 7 until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Mozley, Danny Villanueva, J.C. Lomax, Blake and John Hanley, and Tommy Reece, Jr.

ROWENA L. SHARP

PALACIOS - Rowena L. Sharp, 90, of Palacios, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010 in Bay City. She was born Dec. 17, 1919, in Danforth, Maine, to the late Benjamin McLaughlin and Gusta Scott McLaughlin. She lived most of her life in Old Town, Maine and had worked in food service at the University of Maine.

She is survived by her sons, Robert S. Sharp (Elizabeth) of Marlow, N.H. and Bruce A. Sharp (Sharon) of Palacios; grandchildren, Tom Rogers, Kelli Cotton, Kristi Sharp, and Beth Sharp; and great-grandchildren, Antonio Villarreal and Emily Cotton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Matthew S. Sharp; sisters, Nellie, Thelma, Dora, Dorothy, and Geneva; and brothers, Floyd and Howard McLaughlin.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, at Turning Point Church, 1800 Marguerite, in Bay City.

WEBSTER - Victoria Lynn Talafuse Sharp, 23, of Webster, passed away April 29, 2009. She was born April 2, 1986, in Lake Jackson. She was a 2004 graduate of Van Vleck High School.

Family members who survive her include Michael Micshawn Sharp, Micyla Sharp and Jordan Sharp, all of Webster; Norma Jean Talafuse of Van Vleck, Mary Gibbens of Sugar Valley, Gena Wienserski of Friendswood, Nora Jean Henry, Christina Henry, Ashley Henry and Brittany Henry, all of Van Vleck, Adam Smith and Kyle Wienserski, both of Friendswood.

Mrs. Ina Mae Harter Shaw, 68, of San Antonio, died Sept. 30, 1975 in San Antonio. Survivors include her husband, Douglas of San Antonio; one daughter, Mrs. Abner Ussery of Luling, one son, A. C. Harter of Blessing; one sister, Mrs. Ennie Warn of Palacios and five grandchildren. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of San Antonio and the Persian Lodge No. 160 of San Antonio. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 1975 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in San Antonio at 9 a. m. The Rev. Harold B. Nickle will officiate the services. MARY ANN RUSSELL SHAW

BAY CITY - Mary Ann Russell Shaw, 74, of Bay City, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009 at her home. She was born Oct. 19, 1934, in Warrick County, Ind., to Allen Niles Russell and Dessie Evelyn Wetzel Russell. She was a businesswoman, a life member of VFW Post 2438 Ladies Auxiliary in Bay City, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bay City.

She is survived by her daughters: Diana Ellis of Paramount, Calif., Sandra Winberry of Piggott, Ark., and Vickie Saa of Oceanside, Calif.; her son: Donald Embry of Bay City; her step-children: Barbara Joy Bazzell of Grand Prairie and William Shaw of Redding, Calif.; her sister: Lee McGuire of Bay City; her brothers: Richard Russell of Oklahoma City, James Russell of Vista, Calif., Dennis Russell of San Diego, Calif., Danny Russell of San Diego, Calif., and Don Russell of Bay City; and by four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Walter "Bud" Shaw; her parents: Allen Niles Russell and Dessie Evelyn Wetzel Russell; and by her brothers: Robert Russell and David Russell.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Chris Bischoff officiating.

Funeral services for Patricia Michelle Shaw, 54, were held Jan. 21, 2009 at The Chapel of Beresford Funeral Service in Houston with Pastor Larry Womack officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaw was born Aug. 25, 1954 in Houston to Louis and Margie McDuffie. She died Jan. 16, 2009 in Houston.

Walter Ernest Shaw, 83, of Bay City, Texas, passed away Monday, November 17, 2008.

He was born April 21, 1925 in Watts, California to Walter Weedall Shaw and Beryl Eeleen Lenz Shaw. He was a former resident of California and has resided in Bay City since 1993. He retired as a Deputy Sheriff from the L.A. County Sheriffs Dept in California after 31 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City, a Life Member of VFW Post 2438 in Bay City, and was a World War II veteran of the US Navy.

He is survived by: his wife, Ann R. Shaw of Bay City; his daughter, Barbara Joy Bazzell and husband Jeff of Grand Prairie, Texas; his son, William Shaw and wife Ginger of Redding, California; his step-children, Diana Ellis of Paramount, California, Sandra Winberry and husband Ted of Piggott, Arkanas, Vicki Saa and husband Misael of Oceanside, California and Donald C. Embry of Bay City, Texas; by his brothers, Ronnie Shaw and Ben Shaw, both of Long Beach, California and Stanley Shaw of Ventura, California; and by seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter W. and Beryl L. Shaw.

FRANCES SOPHIA BOWIE SHEARER

ANGLETON - Frances Sophia Bowie Shearer, 93, of Angleton passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. She was born to the late Hubert W. Bowie and Ada M. Spivey Bowie on Oct. 8, 1915 in Bay City at her uncle Harris and aunt Lou Bowie's home on 6th Street. Frances grew up in the community of Cedar Lane, attending school there through the seventh grade, and then attended Bay City High School. After high school she then attended the Marinello School of Beauty in Dallas. In Palacios she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Harmony Club, and the Presbyterian Ladies Church Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Ginger S. Hennig and husband Charles of Angleton; son, Jimmy Shearer Jr. and wife Dubie of Sweeny; sister, Mildred Urban Adams of Cedar Lane; brother, Philip M. Bowie of Cedar Lane; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband of 60 years, James "Jimmy" Shearer; son, Philip H. Shearer Sr.; sister, Huberta Petersen; and a grandson preceded Frances in death.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with the Rev. Janelle Blair officiating. Interment will follow at Bowie Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Collegeport—Dorothy L. Sheldon, 63, of Collegeport died Thursday morning in a Houston hospital following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 24, 1922, in Leon County to Charlie and Mozelle Wells Williams. Her father preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City with the Rev. Lloyd Nixon officiating.

Burial will follow at Halley [Hawley] Cemetery in Blessing under the direction of Talor Brothers Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Donald Wells, Durwood Wells, Robert Ellis, Chester Corporon, Don Fowler and Mason Holsworth.

Funeral services will be held for Felix “Rocky” Sheldon, 21, of Collegeport, 2 p. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Chapel.

Sheldon died September 29, 1981 in Matagorda County.

Carl Raymond Shepard

Carl Raymond Shepard, 54, of Monahans, Texas, formerly of Markham, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 1996 in Ward Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born April 19, 1942 in Bay City to parents Ike and Inez Sisson Shepard. He was employed with Production Operators, Inc. as an operator mechanic working in Monahans.

Survivors are wife, Ann Sheppard of the home, daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ronnie Huffman of Caldwell, daughter, Mary Shepard, Markham, mother-in-law, Mary Singer, Markham; brother, Richard Shepard, Santa Fe; sister, Doris Bradley of Dickerson [Dickinson?]; grandchildren, Derrick, Kelly, Ashley Huffman of Caldwell, and Bobby Shepard of Markham;  three nieces and three nephews.

Funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2 p. m. at the Bay City Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howard Harper officiating. Burial will follow at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Karen Ann Sheppard
(June 14, 1949 - March 3, 2010)

Karen Ann Sheppard passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at her home in Sweeny after a battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was born in Bay City, Texas, to Myrtle and Morris Tullos. She is survived by her husband, Monte Sheppard, two loving sisters, Brenda Ashcraft and Joyce Tullos, daughters, Amanda and Lacey Sheppard, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Karen attended Sweeny High School and Stephen F. Austin University. In school, she was a drum major, twirler, and participated in many local pageants. She worked at the Matagorda County Courthouse as court coordinator for Judge Craig Estlenbaum. Her main passion was her family and friends. Karen loved to cook, read, entertain, sing, and later in life, paint. She loved to laugh and lit up a room when she entered it. Karen always put others above herself, and touched every life she came in contact with in a positive way. She was beautiful inside and out; when asked, her friends and family will tell you what an absolutely special and unique person she was. Karen will be missed. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Monday, March 8, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Sweeny with Pastor Maurice Morrew officiating. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 2:00 p.m., until 4:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia. Master Sergeant Robert E. Sherman, Sr. (U.S. Army, Ret.) departed this earth on April 28, 2010 to rejoin his many comrades in arms on the field of honor of the Houston National Cemetery.

His ashes will be interred with those of his beloved wife and son. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Barbara Chisholm Sherman.

Barbara and Robert married in March 1945 and she served along side her husband as a soldier’s wife raising three children, often alone during his many overseas tours of duty.

A son, Ralph Sherman who was a veteran of the U.S Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Eisenhower during the Vietnam conflict also preceded him in death. Robert served his country for twenty-seven years as an active duty soldier and another eight years as an inactive reservist. He answered the call of duty in March of 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and retired in April of 1969. His overseas tours included North Africa and Italy, two years in Korea, Germany, Japan, and Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict. His awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Medal, Three Army commendation Medals, and Twenty-four years of Good Conduct Medals. He was a graduate of Towson State University of Baltimore, Maryland where he received a bachelor’s degree in Education. He served as an ROTC instructor at Temple University of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for three years. Sergeant Sherman chose to spend his final years of retirement enjoying the quiet life of small town Bay City.

He is survived by: his daughter, Kathryn Huftalen and her children, Steve and Courtney; by a daughter-in-law, Pam Davis and her children, Barbara, Brynna, Austin, and Bryan; and a son, Robert, Jr. as well as two brothers, Ralph and Olin Sherman and a sister, Clarice Tuck.

Walter J. Sherman, 87, of Chicago Illinois, Was born to Francis Xavier Sierminksi and Pearl Bednarek Sierminski on May 15, 1923 and passed away June 8, 2010 in Van Vleck, Texas.

Funeral Services For A. A. Sherrer Are Held Last Thursday

Funeral services for  A. A. Sherrer, 41, were held at the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home last Thursday afternoon with burial at the Hawley Cemetery.

Mr. Sherrer died at his home near Palacios. He was an employee of the Houston Drilling Corporation.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Sherrer; one daughter, Mrs. J. A. Sliva of Blessing; his mother, Mrs. Maude Frieze of Clemville; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Pope of Magnet, Mrs. Etta Mallicitt of Sinton, Mrs. J. R. Davenport and Mrs. Mamie Lee Cardwell of Edna; three brothers, Fred of Edna, Bill of Markham, and George of Monahans; one granddaughter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Vern Sherrer were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leslie Webb officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery.

A life long resident of this area, she was born January 6, 1906, the daughter of John and Ellen Blackburn. She nursed at Wagner General Hospital for many years before she retired. She passed away in Wagner General Hospital Sunday April 7, after a long illness.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Sliva and two grandchildren.

SINTON - Evelyn Katherine Sherrer died Sept. 13, 1999. She was 89.
 
Survivors include her husband, Nealy; two sons, David Sherrer of Sinton and Richard Sherrer of St. Paul; a daughter, Sally White of Sinton; two brothers, Keith Curtis of Houston and Mason Curtis of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Betty Curtis of Bay City; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Ritchea-Gonzales Funeral Home. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 15 in Hawley Cemetery, Bay City.

Bernard H. Shield
(December 13, 1926 - January 8, 2009)

Bernard H. Shield died peacefully at the Methodist Hospital on January 8, 2009, at the age of 82. Bernard was born in the Panhandle town of Miami, Texas, on December 13, 1926. He left high school to enter the Navy at the end of World War II. Following his service to his country he studied at West Texas State University and the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, he taught engineering briefly at UT before embarking on a career as a civil engineer, working first for the Texas Geological Survey, then for many years with the Celanese Corporation. He entered the consulting engineering field with Turner, Collie, and Braden, before launching his own civil engineering consulting firm. He was a specialist in concrete, hydraulics, and construction, and was a life-long member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He enjoyed his involvement in various other professional associations, including the Jaycees and the River Oaks Rotary Club.

Bernard’s first love was ranching. He believed in good stewardship of the earth and of God’s creatures, and was never happier than when he was tending his cattle.

Bernard was a life-long disciple of Jesus Christ and active in the United Methodist Church. He offered himself in service to many ministries in the various congregations to which he belonged. Faithfulness and integrity were hallmarks of his life.

Bernard was deeply devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Mae, in 1980 and a granddaughter, Lindsay Ann Ray, in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Brenda Shield of Bay City; daughter Linda Shield Ray & husband Kenny of Burnet, TX; sons David Bernard Shield & wife Debra of Bay City and Robert C. Shield & wife Carla of Beaumont; sister Ardena Fehr of Greeley, CO; grandchildren Bryan K. Ray, Cecily Shield, Cara Shield, Matthew Murray, Joshua Shield & Emily Shield and great grandchildren Karsyn Murray, Kolbe Murray & Kaleb Murray.

A memorial service will be held in his honor 1:00 PM Monday, January 12, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City with Rev. Chris Harrison officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bay City Building Fund, 2300 Ave. H, Bay City, TX 77414, or the First United Methodist Church of Miami, TX scholarship fund, 201 South Main St., Miami, TX 79059.

Graveside Services For Mrs. Short Sun.

Graveside services were held for Mrs. Henrietta Short of Houston on Sunday at 3 p. m. at the Hawley Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Leonard George Showers

L. G. Showers died at his home, fourteen miles east of Bay City, Sunday morning at 11:30 a. m. He is survived by his wife and son, mother and father and brother.

Funeral services were held at the Walker-Matchett Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 3 p. m., Rev. E. A. Peterson officiating. Burial was in Hawley Cemetery.

Carol Shugart
(August 2, 1934 - August 23, 2006)

Carol Shugart, 72, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at her home in Palacios, TX. She was born August 2, 1934 in Garfield , TX to the late J.D. and Helen Eugenia Lockhart Smith.

Mrs. Shugart is survived by 3 daughters: Pat Carpenter of Taylor, TX; Evelyn Gauna of Tempe, AZ, and Sharon Holbrook of Palacios, TX; 2 sons: Welton T. Shugart, Jr. of Carmel, Indiana, and Michael Shugart of Willow Springs, NC; 2 sisters: Vivian McClure of Elgin, TX, and Fannie Lawrence of Garfield, TX; 2 brothers: J.D. Smith, Jr. of Wealder, TX, and Jackie Smith of Rosenberg, TX; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: W.T. Shugart.

A Graveside Service at Palacios Cemetery will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, August 27, 2006 in Palacios, TX with Rev. David Gruhn officiating. Arrangements with Palacios Funeral Home (361) 972-2012.

Bernice V. Shults

Funeral services for Bernice V. Shults, 85, of Palacios, were held Nov. 3, 1996 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Palacios with Rev. Karl Choate officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Mrs. Shults was born March 7, 1911 in Huckabay, Erath County, Texas to Lyman and Minnie Allen Lennox. She died Nov. 2, 1996 at Memorial Hospital in Port Lavaca.

She was a resident of Palacios since 1984 and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Veda and Jim Dale of Palacios; three grandchildren, Laurie Ford of Houston, Jim Dale of Coppell, Tex. and Dan Ripple of Plano, Tex.; and five great-grandchildren, Amber Dale of Palacios, Katie and Kerrie Ford of Houston, and Jessica and Mickey Dale of Coppell, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Ripple, and grandson, Kerry Dale.

Jeanette Sue Rickaway Shultz

Bay City—Jeanette Sue Rickaway Shultz, 24, died Sunday in Laredo.

Services will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

Survivors are her husband, Medford B., of Laredo; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Lindsey Rickaway of Blessing; and a brother, Ronald Rickaway of San Antonio.

LEROY SIDNEY
 

BAY CITY - Funeral Services for Leroy Sidney will be Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m., at First Berean Baptist Church, Cedar Lane, with Rev. Gilbert Franklin officiating. Burial will follow Berean Cemetery, Cedar Lane.

He was born March 12, 1932 to the late Alfred Sidney and Esther Boston in Matagorda County. He died Aug. 17, 2008 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Viewing will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday, at Green's Mortuary Funeral Home.
