Eugenia Lacy Salter

Eugenia Lacy Salter, a strong southern magnolia and community advocate who lived almost a century in the state she adored, died July 1, 2003 in a Houston nursing home.

Mrs. Salter was born in the small East Texas town of Pittsburgh, the daughter of Robert and Florence Lacy. Her father was a country doctor, who made house calls and often was paid in chickens and home canned vegetables.

After high school, Mrs. Salter attended Southern Methodist University and graduated with a bachelor's degree. Mrs. Salter liked to recall her student days and the year the Texas A&M University yearbook was dedicated to her. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and was active in the alumni association until recent years.

At a dance on a summer evening in 1931, Mrs. Salter met her future husband, Wright "Mony" Salter of Little Rock, Ark. Sparks flew and they were married in October of that year. The young couple lived their early years in Arkansas, Indiana and Kentucky and were helped through the Depression years by crates of sweet potatoes shipped from her family in East Texas. Two children, Robert and Florence, were born in the mid 1930s and died in infancy.

The Salters returned to Texas, moved to Bay City in 1948 and opened W. O. Salter Implements.

When Mr. Salter died suddenly in 1966, Mrs. Salter was determined to continue the business and she did successfully until closing it four years ago.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Study Club, Festival of the Arts, Girl Scouts, Order of the Eastern Star and many other civic organizations.

She loved to travel and made her first trip to Europe with her family in the mid-1970s followed by journeys to many domestic and international destinations.

Her intense pride in her home state was illustrated during a trip to Mexico City.

"We were walking down the stairs of our hotel when the buzz came that Mexico's president was arriving,"ť daughter Martha recalled. "An army of guards, armed with automatic weapons, kept us back. That is everyone except for Mom who stepped out of the crowd and extended her hand and said to the astonished president and said,ť I'm Eugenia Salter from Bay City, Texas and I'm so happy to be in Mexico!"

"We could hear the unmistakable clicking sounds of guns being loaded and everyone held their breath. But I guess those in charge of security concluded she was not a threat to national security but advised her to step away."

Mrs. Salter traveled alone domestically until her mobility, not her spirit, forbade it.

Her family said she was a passionate sports fan and loved attending hometown Black Cat football and Houston Astro ballgames. In later years she followed the Houston Rockets.

She was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed her weekly games until two years ago when health dealt her a losing hand.

Survivors include: four children, Wright Salter of Houston, Martha Salter Cordell of Berwyn, Penn., Margaret Salter Carrington of Danville, Calif., and Julia Salter Hollister of San Francisco, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Cornell Barnard of Oakland, Calif., Diana Barnard of San Francisco, Scott Salter of Houston, Bradley Salter of St. Petersburg, Fla., Robert Cordell, Christopher Cordell and Mark Cordell, all of Berwyn Penn., Taylor and Austin Carrington, of Danville, Calif.; two great grandsons, Grant and Tye Salter of Houston, one great granddaughter, Lacy Salter of St. Petersburg, Fla., a sister-in law Gladys Lacy and two nephews, William Lacy and Robert Lacy, all of Houston and family companion, Christine Spiller of Bay City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. A00014D2003JL02

Baker Lee Shannon
April 26, 1925 – February 26, 2021

Baker Lee Shannon, 95, of Houston, TX, passed away February 26, at his home in The Abbey Senior Living Center.

He was born April 26, 1925, in Eastland, Texas, to Catherine and Baker Shannon. He had a younger brother, Harry Shannon. His father worked as an oil driller and they moved around a lot in South Texas, eventually to settle on the Pierce Ranch, where his father became the ranch manager. As a boy, he and his brother were in the Boy Scouts and both earned the Eagle Scout Badge.

Baker went to Texas A&M College of Engineering and earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in the Class of 1946. He was a lifelong supporter of the school and of the Corps of Cadets Association, endowing some scholarships and making a large contribution to the construction of the new engineering center.

After college, he moved to Houston. While trying to find a permanent place to live, he resided in the Downtown Houston YMCA. He met his future wife, Nancy Beatrice Pittman, in a bible class in the First Presbyterian Church in Houston, and they were married on April 3, 1948. He worked as an engineer in the growing air-conditioning industry, eventually starting his own company, Air Conditioning Industries, Inc., which built highly-specialized environmental control rooms for cancer research and other complicated projects; he was a Registered Professional Engineer. He also liked to travel, along with his wife, to other countries on ASME sponsored trips to look at engineering marvels around the world, as well as take vacation cruises. And, he loved ice cream!

He was active in the Presbyterian church and the Boy Scouts of America, where he became the Scoutmaster of Troop 624, then later becoming involved with adult leader training in the Wood Badge Program. In later life, he joined the Volunteers at the West Houston Medical Center and served as President for a number of years. He also was President of the Alief AARP Chapter three times. At the age of 50, he decided to become a Deputy Constable, and so he had the distinction of being the oldest rookie constable in Harris County Precinct 5!

Competitive swimming, in the Senior Masters Program, became a great passion of his, and he loved to travel to swim meets, even as far away as New Zealand. Sometimes he was just trying to beat his own time in many categories, because he was often the only one in his advanced age group.

Baker is survived by his two children, three grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his brother Harry, and his grandson Josh.

Davant attended elementary school in Matagorda and high school at Gulf, where he earned a varsity letter as a basketball player. He entered the U. S.
