Tom was elected as State Representative in a special election on his birthday, December 16, 1967 and served the counties of Matagorda, Wharton, and Brazoria for 36 years.  He served on many various committees but the ones closest to his heart were always Education, Vice Chair for Higher Education, Chair for Higher Education Subcommittee on Budget and Oversight, Chair for Redistricting, Ways and Means, and his most important Bill of Law that he wrote and passed was the MD Anderson Cancer Center Self Referral Bill allowing people to no longer have to have a referral from another doctor.  He served over three decades spanning eight Presidents, and was Speaker Pro Tem from 1993-2001 and upon leaving office was Dean of the House. He absolutely loved his wife's oatmeal cookies and German Chocolate cake...and always had a candy dish near!

He never met a stranger and was always extending a hand to anyone, truly wanting to know more about them, always talking to everyone, anywhere he went and never making people feel rushed.  He truly and genuinely cared about people.

Rose Mary Uherek
(October 14, 1929 - June 20, 2017)

Rosemary Trentham Uherek, 87, was born October 14, 1929 in Stafford, Texas to Jessie Raymond Trentham and Bertha Mae Tipton Trentham. She was the 2nd of 5 children. Rose and her family lived in Damon, Texas. It was there through the encouragement of her grandmother that she went to Sunday School and Church where she learned about Jesus Christ and trusted her life to Him. When Rose was 14 the family moved to Louisiana. It was there that she met Adolph Frank Uherek and at age 15 she married him. “Ade” served in the U.S. Military during WWII and when his term of service ended they moved to the oil fields of West Texas where he found work on the rigs. During this time their children were born. Later they were transferred by Marathon Oil to Matagorda County where they made their home first in Markham then Sugar Valley and finally settled in Van Vleck. Rose had been a full time homemaker and after the children were older she worked as a waitress for Caine’s Restaurant, Circle C, and Wayne’s Restaurant. She enjoyed being with people as she served them food because this gave her opportunity to talk to them about Jesus and serve them faith. She and the family attended the Church of Christ and later Harvest Time. Later into Ade’s retirement, his health declined and she spent most of her time lovingly caring for him. She took pleasure in her flower garden and her collectibles, but most of all she loved her family and took every opportunity to tell others about her children’s talents and accomplishments which she considered as God’s gifts of Grace and Truth in their lives. In the past five years Rose’s health began to steadily decline. Her children cared for her in her home until she needed the services of Sweeny House, The Legacy, and finally the Bay Villa Healthcare Center. It was there, with family at her side that she passed from their loving care into her eternal home with her wonderful Lord Jesus Christ.

Rosemary is preceded in death by sister Opal Lee Trentham who died at birth; brother Raymond Gilbert Trentham; parents Jessie and Bertha Mae Trentham; her husband of almost 60 years “Ade” Uherek; and grandson Frankie Orr.

She is survived by sisters JoAnn Heffernan and Jessie Ruby Jenkins both of Eldorado, Texas; daughter Nova Jean Orr of Van Vleck; son Louis Ray Uherek and his wife Gay Lyn of Markham; daughter Caroline Mae Griffith and her husband Vernon Ray of Van Vleck; grandchildren David Orr (Sandra), Chris Orr (Amy), Luann Uherek, Karen Uherek , Louis Ray Uherek Jr., Susan Mary Lewis (Wesley), and Julie Deckard (Andrew); 18 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren; and as well as nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. “She loved them all.”

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, June 22, 2017 at The First Baptist Church of Van Vleck with Rev. Bob Hobbins officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers are Bobbie Jean Behlan, Hailie Marie Geracci, Andrew Deckard, Louis Ray Uherek Jr., David Behlan, and Zachary Behlan.

Edith Louise Urban

February 18, 1946 – November 9, 2022

Edith Louise Urban left this life on November 9, 2022 at her home at the age of 76.  She was born to Francis Harvey Gragg and Dorothy Melda Thompson Gragg on February 18, 1946 in Peebles, Ohio.  Francis Gragg passed in 1947 and Dorothy Gragg remarried in 1954 to frank Daniel Burchett.

Edith is meeting her husband of 46 years, Hollie Warren Urban; father, mother, step-father, sisters Gloria Jane and Helen; brothers Robert Lynn, Orvie, Russell and Billy Joe and grandparents Arthur and Essie Thompson and Milton and Edith Mary Gragg.

She leaves behind sons Harold Leo Urban and Willie Dean Urban, 5 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, 1 great grandson, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Edith had two loves outside of her family.  The first was her church and church family.  Though unable to attend in later years, she was quite active before health forced her to slow down.  She served as Acteens Director for several years.  The second love was golf.  She actually got her husband H. W. into golf.  She told him she wanted to do something with him outdoors instead of sitting in the stands while he officiated football, baseball and softball.  He retired from umpiring to play golf with his wife.    As with church, she was unable to participate as much in later years, but she kept his game going by watching his swing.  She especially enjoyed working at the Bay City Country Club in the pro shop.  She made a lot of friends there.  She loved going outside and watching the kids run and play.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Cedar Lane Baptist Church.  Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mike Patterson officiating.  Interment will follow at the Bowie Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Eugene Taylor, Jason Beard, Cadin Cain, C. L. Hollie Warren Urban

May 25, 1945 - September 16, 2021

Hollie Warren “HW” Urban left this life on September 16, 2021 at the age of 76. He was born to Lloyde Morris and Dorothy Bankhead Urban on May 25, 1945 in Laurel, Mississippi.  Dorothy passed from this life the same day.  Lloyde married Mildred Bowie seven months later.  Mildred Bowie Urban adopted and raised Hollie as her own.  No one ever had a better Momma and Dad.

HW was preceded in death by his father, mother, momma and sister Judith. He was also preceded by all three sets of grandparents Lloyde Warren and Leona Urban, Hollie and Rosalie Bankhead and Hubert and Ada Bowie. He leaves his beloved with of 45 years, Edith and sons Harold Leo Urban of Illinois and Willie Dean Urban of Old Ocean; 5 grandsons and 3 granddaughters. HW served his country for six years in the US Navy. After returning from the service as a non-commissioned officer (E5), he attended Stephen F. Austin for a year. In 1971 he went to work for Dow Chemical. He retired in 2001 after 30 years of service in research.

He said his life changed for the better on November 11, 1976. On that day he married his soul mate, Edith Louise Gragg. She was his reason for the rest of his life. They were married in Cedar Lane Baptist Church where they remain members. They spent the next 45 years together. How he loved his wife and boys.

After his family, he loved officiating high school sports and golf. He spent 25 years on the football field. He served as President, Vice-President and Secretary of the Gulf Coast Football Chapter of TASO (Texas Assoc. of Sports Officials). He also served 4 years on the TASO Football state Board. He spent his last years as an Observer for the Houston Football Chapter of TASO after the Gulf Coast Chapter merged with the Houston Chapter.

He and Edith loved to play golf. She was the one that got him into golf. Even when Edith couldn’t play very much, she kept an eye on his game. He called her his “golf coach”. It was something they could do to spend more time together outside instead of her sitting in the stands watching him.

HW was also a member of both Brazoria County Cavalry and Matagorda County Cavalry. He wanted the kids coming back for the Middle East to know they were appreciated, instead of being treated the way many Vietnam Vets and Vietnam era Vets were treated when they came home.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mike Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at the Bowie Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie Urban, Harry Urban, Jr., Jason Beard, Eugene Taylor, C. I. Pray III and C. I Pray IV.
