William R. Wagner, 72, passed away November 29, 2012. He was born February 1, 1940 in Antigo Wisconsin to Warren R. and Lenora Knorr Wagner. He spent eight years in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, worked at nuclear plants in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, California, Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. His last job was at NASA in Mission Control. He retired in 2002. He was a member of the Bay City American Legion Post 11, No Coal Coalition and the Matagorda Museum. He is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Helen; and four children, Christopher and wife, Mona Varney Wagner, Jennifer Wagner Nicholson and husband Russell, Terry Wagner, and Victoria Wagner and friend Gary Harper; grandsons, Nicholas Wagner, Adam Wagner, Robert Wagner, Clarissa Wagner, Dana Holm, Jacob Kirstein, Mathew Kirstein and Nickolas Kirstein. Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Green’s Mortuary in Bay City. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday December 5, 2012 at Green’s Mortuary with Dr. T. L. Richardson of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church officiating. He will be cremated.

Bob “Captain” Wakefield, Sr., 82, went to be with his Lord after a short illness on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Bob was born on July 4, 1929 in Bay City, TX. to the late William and Vallie Sparks Wakefield. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter at the bay-shore camp he built. He was a man that took a little and made it a lot. The things that were most important to him were his Lord and his family. Bob is survived by his wife, Dot Wakefield; daughter, Diane Wakefield; sons, Mike, Bobby, Scott, Glen and David all of Bay City; 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous other loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Bill. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Dot Wakefield Dorothy S. “Dot” Wakefield, 77, of Bay City passed away July 2, 2021. She was born April 24, 1944 in Bay City, TX to the late Eaton Stansell & Pauline Shannon Stansell. Dot was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She always had a smile and loving heart. She touched many lives in such a positive way, and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob Wakefield and her son Michael Dewayne Wakefield. Sally J. Warnes, age 80, of Georgetown, Texas passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at her residence in Georgetown. Services for Mrs. Warnes are currently pending. Born on August 30, 1932 in Medina, Ohio, to parents Warren A. and Arebecca White, she was one of five children raised in the White household. After graduation from high school, Sally earned her Associates Degree from Wooster Business College in Ohio. She began her career in the family business and later directed her skills in a medical clinic serving others. She had a heart of gold and the love and care she modeled for her children was a testament to how much she cherished being a mother. Sally loved the outdoors, where she enjoyed the beauty of flowers, the local wildlife and fishing. Her joy in music included traditional, county and polka songs. Sally will be greatly missed, but she will be forever in our memory and always in our hearts. Sally was preceded in death by: her parents, Warren A. and Arebecca White; stepmother, Ethel White Browand; daughter, Christina May Sears; granddaughter, Leigh Anne Frontz; grandson, William Wesley Frontz; brothers, Jack and Robert White. PALACIOS, Dec. 27.—A baffling mystery of the sea Wednesday night confronted officers of this Gulf coast town as they searched for H. O. Welch, 36, keeper of the light on forlorn Half Moon Reef—a desolate rocky place in the bay. Welch was last seen when boatmen took him to the crescent-shaped reef on Friday, December 13. That night he made his last entry in the lighthouse log. It read: “Lamp lighted at 6 p. m. All is well.” Three days later when the alternate lightkeeper went to relieve Welch the beacon was darkened and there was no trace of Welch on the barren reef. The missing lightkeeper’s watch, money and personal effects were inside the lighthouse. Apparently, investigators said, Welch had prepared for bed but did not retire for the bed bore no evidence of having been in use. The beacon light had consumed the oil and wick and was extinguished when relief reached the reef. Authorities said the light was an old fashioned type that burned for 24 hours without refilling. Half Moon Reef is two miles from the mainland and a strong undertow swirls around the bay, desolate spot. Because of the undertow, officers said, it would have been practically impossible for Welch to swim to the mainland if he had sought to do so. Welch was marooned on the reef without a boat. Coast guardsman and aviators Wednesday searched for marsh-like mainland for miles in quest of the missing lightkeeper. Earl R. Allen of Palacios, brother of the missing man and other relatives have kept a vigil along the shore for the lightkeeper. “I can’t understand it,” Allen told friends. “He seems to have just vanished from the reef.” Daily Tribune, December 27, 1934 Lightkeeper’s Body Is Found PALACIOS. Dec. 29—The sea Friday gave up the body of H. O. Welch, 36, missing keeper of the light on Half Moon Reef. Coast guardsman sighted the body as the tide swept it in near Port O’Connor, 12 miles from the lonely reef on which Welch tended the lighthouse, and from where he disappeared mysteriously on December 13. Justice of the Peace A. C. Frazier of Port Lavaca, who went immediately to the spot where guardsmen brought the body of Welch to shore, returned an inquest verdict of “accidental death.” The body was badly decomposed. Sheriff J. O. O’Neal said, but apparently bore no outward marks of foul play. Welch was taken to Half Moon Reef lighthouse by boatmen on December 13. The boatmen returned to the mainland and left Welch alone on the reef. Three days later, when the light in the beacon burned out, it was found Welch was missing. Authorities had not determined the manner in which Welch apparently fell from the rocky reef and was drowned.

Dale Edward Wendt, 83, passed away December 1, 2012. He was born December 15, 1928 in Markham, TX to the late Edward Wendt & Lela McElroy Wendt. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict and worked for many years at Marathon Oil Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Socha Wendt, in 2010 and his daughter, Angela Lynn Smith, in 1983. Anthony (Tony) Shawn Whitt passed away on October 16, 2012 surrounded by his loving family in his parents’ home after a short and tough battle with cancer. He was born in Bay City, Texas on August 21, 1961 to Mary Griffin Whitt and Delbert Whitt. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1979 and attended Sam Houston State University. Tony worked several years for Dow Chemical before he found his true passion in life. Tony was a car enthusiast, whom if you knew him, you probably bought a car from him at some point. He spent many years working for multiple car business across Brazoria County. He was the life of family and friendly gatherings, always making people smile and laugh. He is survived by his parents Mary Griffin Whitt and Delbert Whitt of West Columbia, his two brothers Dr.Ken Whitt of College Station and Timothy Whitt & wife, Wendy of West Columbia, his grandmother, Mary Dee Griffin of West Columbia; his two nieces , Whitney Whitt and her fiance’ Kevin Kelso of San Antonio and Alona Whitt of College Station; nephews, Dr Jacob Whitt of New Orleans, La.; Dr. Travis White of New Orleans, La., Zach Whitt & his wife, Cally of College Station and his very special friend, Zella Harvey of West Columbia, who stood by his side with love and care, and many other loving relatives. Steven Arnold Wilbanks, aged 79 years, 9 months and 11 days, died at his home in Palacios early Tuesday morning following an illness of some duration. He was born in Elkhart, Ill., Feb. 10, 1860, where he grew to manhood and continued to make his home until he moved to Texas some years ago. He was a very progressive farmer in his native state and continued this vocation near Collegeport, where he located when coming to this state. About five years ago he moved to Palacios to make his home. He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters and several grand children. Funeral services were held at the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning, Rev. Mack officiating and the Methodist choir furnishing the music. The remains were then taken to the Hawley Cemetery east of Blessing where interment was made. A large concourse of friends from Bay City, Collegeport and Blessing were in attendance.

Mr. Williams was born in Bay City, Friday, July 12, 1929, to Louis Williams and Harriett Morgan Williams, and died Sunday, Feb. 25, 1996, at Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ester Williams of Bay City, and a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Rose Mary (& Sammy) Hayes of Bay City. He also leaves four step-children, Mrs. Lisa (& Nathaniel) Moore, Ms. Rosa Williams, Ms. Paula Williams and Ms. Michele Williams, all of Bay City; three grandchildren, Ms. Patricia Williams, Barry Williams and Mrs. Lolita (& Roosevelt) Gardner. Billie Mack Williams, 90, passed away on April 3, 2012. Billie Mack was born to Lee and Eudora Williams in Rita, Texas on December 16, 1921. He grew up in Rita and Hix Texas and graduated from Caldwell High School. After graduation, Billie Mack traveled from Central Texas to the Texas Gulf Coast working in Freeport, Texas and, due to a childhood injury, supported the war effort by working at the Abercrombie Refinery. He began working for the Ohio Oil Company, later renamed Marathon Oil, in Freeport in 1948. In 1948, Billie Mack married the love of his life, Earline Angell, of Cameron, Texas who had also migrated to the Texas Gulf Coast. In 1951 the newly-married couple transferred with Marathon Oil to the Markham Gas Plant in Markham Texas. In Markham, Billie Mack and Earline spent the majority of their adult years working and raising a family. Billie Mack and Earline were lifelong members of the Markham Baptist Church. Billie was instrumental in obtaining Markham a safe water system and served on the Markham Water Board for many years. Billie Mack retired from Marathon Oil in 1984. After retirement, Billie Mack and Earline relocated to El Campo, Texas in 1998 becoming members of The First Baptist Church, El Campo. Family and friends were the focus of his life. Life in Markham revolved around sons Tommy and Greg’s activities in Markham and at Tidehaven High School. Later, Billie Mack focused on his grandchildren, Brandon and Alex Williams, attending activities, teaching them a variety of skills and visiting them whenever possible including multiple visits to Bogota, Colombia and Chicago, Illinois. Billie was always known for his kindness and patience for all family, friends, and extended family members. He was always willing to assist anyone in any way in good times and when in need. He is preceded in death by: his son, Thomas Lee Williams in 1994; his parents; brother, Pat Williams; and sister, Pauline Kornegay. He is survived by: his loving wife, Earline Williams; son, Greg and daughter-in-law Lucy of Friendswood, Texas; grandchildren, Brandon Williams and wife Shona of Joplin, Missouri and Alex Williams of Los Angeles, California; brothers, Lonnie Williams and his wife Brenda of Hix, Texas, Ed Williams of Hix, Texas; sisters, Shirley Eberspacher and her husband Lou of Angleton, Texas, Martha Phillip of Freeport, Texas, Patricia Hebert and her husband A. J. of Palacios, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend our thanks to all friends and family for your prayers, cards and loving support. We also wish to extend our gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and caregivers at The Colonnades, Holly Hall, Memorial Hermann, Clear Lake Regional Hospital and Triumph Rehabilitation over the past year that cared for dad during dad’s illness. Rose Lee Polensky Williams, 91, of Bay City passed away February 21, 2012. She was born August 23, 1920 in Hungerford, TX to the late Antone Michael Polensky and Mary Ann Luczak Polensky. On November 23, 1940 she married Lonnie Williams. They were married for 70 years. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and loved her garden, which she shared with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister four brothers, one grandson and one great grandson. She is survived by daughter Mary Jean Hawthorn of Wharton, TX; son Johnny Robert Williams of Bay City; grandchildren Paul Tenberg of Van Vleck, Keith Robert Williams of Bay City and Jill Suzanne Davis of Bay City; 6 great grandchildren, 2 great- great grandchildren; brother Laurence Polensky of El Campo and sister Beatrice Duzan of Saginaw, TX. PLACEDO - Twila Corena Williams of Placedo died May 4, 2012 at the age of 72. She was born on July 1, 1939 in Palacios to the late Charles Austin and Ethel Willingham Williams. She had worked at Hinzes Barbeque for 10 years and then was a hotel clerk at Homer Norton Hotel in Rosenberg for many years before her retirement. She is survived by her children Christine Poppinga of Brazoria, Dennis Johnson of Freeport, Shannon Johnson of Sweeny, Diana Johnson Redd of Placedo; brothers Delmar Williams of Kingsville, Oland Williams of CA, Andy Williams of LA; sister Wanda Gonzales of Galveston; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Army who was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Y Medal. Survivors include the following: a brother, Horace Williamson of Los Angeles, Calif.; a niece, Doreen Coyle of Houston; and many other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers will be Rev. Williamson’s friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Lee Williamson, in 1992.

Funeral services for Mr. Andrew Buford Witherspoon, age 81, will be held Wednesday, October 11, at 11 a. m., at the Tyree Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bay City, with Rev. Roy Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Tuesday until 9 p. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Wednesday from 10-11 a. m. at the church. Mr. Witherspoon was born Monday, July 13, 1914, in Birmingham, Alabama, to George Witherspoon and Viola Green Witherspoon, and died Friday, October 6, 1995, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He graduated from Industrial High School in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a member of the band and the football team. He pursued further studies at Payne University in Birmingham, Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. The culmination of his education resulted in his receiving his Pharmaceutical Degree. He later enlisted in the armed services where he served in World War II. His army career was completed with his rank as 1st Sergeant. Witherspoon’s religious affiliation included membership at Tyree Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bay City, where he was church organist for 30 years. He also served as Trustee and member of the Board of Stewards. His love for music enhanced his desire to provide free piano lessons to interested individuals. His civic representation and community involvement was evident throughout Matagorda County and in Bay City. He was a member of the Matagorda County Hospital District, and a member of the Matagorda Sheriff’s Reserve. He also was a former member of the Draft Board, and one of the organizers of the Economic Action Committee. He served as former secretary of Gulf Coast Lodge #272. For 27 years, Witherspoon owned and operated South End Drug Store on Duncan Street. He later bought the Roland Hilliard Project to Bay City, and was instrumental in the building of the Bay Breeze Project in Bay City. Survivors include his faithful wife of 51 years, Mrs. Lottie Boone Witherspoon of Bay City, and two foster sons, Roy Armelin of Houston and Michael Hebert of Bay City. Also a foster daughter-in-law, Wanda Sue Hebert, and two foster grandsons, Michael, Jr. and Andrew Hebert. Also two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Mrs. Erma Boone Stevens and Mrs. Naomi Boone Young and husband, Dave, all of Bay City; and three cousins. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Mrs. Fannie Boone Armelin and husband Wellington, Lloyd Boone, Arthur Boone and Alonzo “Prof” Stevens. Robert Wittig, 83, of Wharton died Saturday, November 24, 2012, in Houston following an extended illness. He was born on May 20, 1929, in Wharton, the son of the late Clarence August Wittig and Frieda Henrietta Margareta Koch Wittig. Visitation was held on Tuesday night at the Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Robert was a lifelong resident of Wharton and he graduated from Wharton High School in 1947. He served his country in the US Army 1st Armored Division and Radio Operator of the 5th Armored Division. He married Georgia “Ann” Lewis on September 6, 1958, and she preceded him in death on November 23, 1980. Besides his wife and parents, his brother Leroy Wittig also preceded Robert in death. Robert was a farmer and worked as armed security for South Texas Nuclear Project for ten years. Robert loved offshore fishing, playing dominoes, gardening, and growing pecans and vegetables. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Survivors include: his daughters, Kathy Freidhof and husband Bill of Houston, Naida Kellogg and husband Randy of Cypress, and Roxanna Wittig of Sugar Land; son, Larry Wittig and wife Teri Ann of Lake Jackson; brothers, Leonard Wittig and wife Lil of Boling, Albert Wittig of Freeport, Raymond Wittig of Wharton, Herman Wittig and wife Linda of Boling, and Howard Wittig and wife Loretta of Lane City; sisters, Helen Thomas and husband Bill of Houston and Edith Thonsgaard and husband Dale of Wharton; sister-in-law, Shirley Wittig of Wharton; grandchildren, Conner Freidhof, Claire Freidhof, April Williams, Lindsey Wittig, Clifford Wittig, Clayton Wittig, Elijah Wittig, and Shelbi Kellogg and great-granddaughter Kaci Williams.
