Timothy Ann Hardy Sloan DiNino

July 22, 1937 - July 31, 2016

A native resident of Bay City, Texas, and prominent retired lawyer, Timothy Ann Hardy Sloan DiNino, died peacefully in her home on July 31, 2016, at the age of 79, surrounded by her five sons, siblings and close friends.

Born on July 22, 1937, to Susie Lou Cunningham Hardy and retired State District Judge G.P. Hardy Jr., she is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent R. DiNino, Director Emeritus of Bands at the University of Texas at Austin, and Director Emeritus of the UT Longhorn Band; and sister, Patricia Sue Hardy Townsend.

She is survived by her five sons, David Michael Sloan and wife Dena Guisti of Baytown, Texas, George Todd Sloan and wife Elizabeth of Austin, Texas, Timothy Patrick Sloan of Houston, Texas, Richard Geoffrey Sloan Sr. and wife Marianne Gordey of Austin, Texas, and Matthew Hardy Sloan and wife Crystal Len of Bay City, Texas.

She is also survived by her step-children, Dinah DiNino Rieves and husband Mike, Carmen DiNino Alspach and husband Rick; step-grandson, Charlie Ward. In addition, she is survived by her brother, G. P. Hardy III and wife Sandra McKenzie Hardy of Victoria, Texas; sister, Susie Lou Hardy Longand husband Robert Long of Bay City, Texas; and sister Melinda Hardy Horn of Stafford, Texas. She is also survived by eight loving grandchildren and their spouses; five great-grandchildren; numerous cousins; and other relatives who reside across the United States, and extended family around the world.

She was married three times, first to David Walter Sloan, the father of their five sons; then Earl Vandorn Keene; and finally to Vincent R. DiNino.

Timothy was the oldest of five siblings and possessed a unique feature - one blue eye and one brown eye. She graduated from Bay City High School with the Class of 1955, and her love of music and learning sustained and filled her heart. Timothy attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she began studying biology and chemistry, as well, she played clarinet in the UT Symphonic Band. She received a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in Biology, English and Education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and later taught biology at Fulmore Junior High school in Austin Texas. Beginning law school at the University of Texas School of Law, she transferred to the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law and received a JD in 1971, as she was one of only six women in the graduating class.

Timothy obtained her Texas State law license while working with attorney Warren Burnet from Odessa, Texas, and worked with him in the representation of Caesar Chavez, Texas Farm Workers Union. After partnering with Richard C. Abalos of Odessa, Texas, she was employed with the Midland County District Attorney’s Office, and later served as the Administrative Assistant District Attorney in Fort Bend County, Texas. Desiring to return to her hometown of Bay City, she opened a law office with her brother and retired father. She retired in 2013, after her son took over the law practice.

With 40+ years of professional legal experience, she attributed her early success as a trial lawyer to having a man’s first name, at a time when very few women were trial lawyers. She experienced great joy in helping her clients. Timothy was a member of numerous legal Who’s Who affiliations for dedication, leadership and excellence in legal services, was a member of the Matagorda County Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, The Missouri Bar, the American Bar Association and disputed cases in both the Texas Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States. She also served to provide expert legal consultation to scholars and litigators of several foreign countries. A highlight of her career was working with a team of criminal defense lawyers in 1981, in defending a prison inmate in a death penalty case involving the killing of a Texas prison warden and deputy, and various violations of prisoners’ civil rights, which led to the reform of the Texas prison system by the legislature.

During her life in Bay City, she was involved in many causes: Matagorda County Jazz Festival; Palacios Beautification and Pavilion Project; Matagorda County Women’s Crisis Center and Matagorda County Episcopal Health Outreach Program (MEHOP). She sponsored exchange students throughout her life including students from China, India, and Norway.

Timothy’s life was fulfilled with love in her twilight years, with the marriage of Vincent R. DiNino. Her “darling boy” as she described him, was a charming and marvelous Italian gentleman. Their courtship brought two people together who shared the love of the arts, music and a quest for companionship. Vince often said how lucky he was to share his love with Timothy. In her honor, he created The Timothy Ann Sloan Scholarship for the Clarinet Section Leader for the UT Longhorn Band.

Timothy Ann rarely minced her words, she loved her family and never met a stranger. She was a classic beautiful Texas lady, with true grit, and championed her causes to the end. She loved to travel the world, as she made friends everywhere she went. She loved her pets, and rarely was without a purring cat to cuddle with. She will be remembered for her words of encouragement, and her open arms and willingness to help anyone.

A “Celebration of Life” memorial service will be held on August 20, 2016, at 11 a.m., at the Matagorda County Multi-Purpose Building, located at the Matagorda County Fairgounds facilities, 4511 FM 2668, Bay City, TX 77414.

Memorial donations may be made in Timothy’s honor, to the Matagorda County Women’s Crisis Center, P.O. Vincent R. DiNino
(October 25, 1918 - September 9, 2014)

Vincent R. DiNino, Director Emeritus of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, and Director Emeritus of the Longhorn Band, died peacefully at home in Bay City Texas on September 9, 2014, with his wife at his side.

There will be a memorial halftime performance of the UT Longhorn Band and the Longhorn Alumni Band at the October 18, 2014 football game in Austin Texas at Darrell K Royal - Memorial Stadium, and a public memorial service will be held on October 19, 2014 at The University of Texas at The Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Concert Hall.

Vincent DiNino was born October 25, 1918 in Manhattan, Kansas. He was preceded in death by Jane DiNino, his first wife of 67 years. He is survived by his wife, Timothy Ann Sloan DiNino; his daughters, Dinah Rieves and husband, Mike; Carmen Alspach and husband Rick; grandson, Charlie Ward. He is also survived by his stepsons, Michael Sloan and wife, Dena; Todd Sloan and wife, Beth; Patrick Sloan, Geof Sloan, Sr. and wife, Marianne Sloan; and Matthew Sloan, along with a host of friends including his former students he called his ‘children.’

DiNino, formerly the Director of Bands at Alexandria High School in Alexandria, Minnesota, and the first faculty status Longhorn Band Director at The University of Texas, was a living legend in the Burnt Orange Nation. He was a beloved mentor and guiding force to Longhorn Band members from the time he first climbed the ladder in 1955, throughout his time after retirement in 1985 as a many time director of The Eyes of Texas at home football games through his 94th year in 2014. He was known to many thousands of football fans as the Director of the Showband of the Southwest, and affectionately known as “Mr. D”. DiNino loved The University of Texas, the Longhorn Band, the Longhorn Alumni Band and the Longhorn football team. He was known as a man who could remember the names of his former students and former football players and could recite a story about each, as he possessed an amazing recall at any given moment.

DiNino, along with his deceased wife of 67 years, Jane DiNino, and a few former Longhorn Band members founded the Longhorn Alumni Band, now the largest organization of its type in the United States. Jane was an integral partner with DiNino in the transition of a motley crew of about 70 men in 1955 culminating into the legendary Showband of the Southwest of today.

Under DiNino’s leadership, the Longhorn Band grew to an organization of 400 and more at times. During the years of Coach Darrell K. Royal’s era, the Longhorn Band, or a smaller contingent thereof, was always present at all football games. DiNino is one of the few non-sports figures to be elected to the Longhorn Hall of Honor and was an honorary member of the “T” Association, The Silver Spurs and the Texas Cowboys. With his influence in Longhorn traditions, DiNino is also credited with presenting a Texas flag to the spirit service organization, Alpha Phi Omega, as they incorporated the use of the world’s largest Texas flag used during pregame ceremonies at all Texas home football games.

DiNino’s love for the Longhorn Band will be carried forth to many generations of Longhorn Band members who will benefit from the scholarship programs he initiated. Beginning with $200.00 in 1956, the scholarship programs have grown to substantial sums through scholarships offered by the Texas Exes Association, the Engineering Department Band Scholarship program, the Longhorn Alumni Band and others. The Longhorn Alumni Band endowed scholarships fund alone now exceeds $1,000,000.00.

Vince DiNino will be missed and continued to be loved by all who knew him and all who ever came in contact with him. He was an amazing man, known to be firm but fair and was a true gentleman’s gentleman. In lieu of flowers, we request donations to be directed to the Longhorn Alumni Band Scholarship Fund at PO Box 302611, Austin, TX, 78703, or The Bay City Public Library at 1100 7th Street, Bay City, TX, 77414.

Former Longhorn Band Director Vincent DiNino dies at 95
The University of Texas at Austin mourns the passing of Vincent R. DiNino, director of bands emeritus.

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas at Austin mourns the passing of Vincent R. DiNino, director of bands emeritus. He was 95 years old.

Known affectionately by his students as "Mr. D.," DiNino served as director of the Longhorn Band from 1955 to 1975 and as the university's director of bands from 1975 to 1985.

DiNino touched the lives of thousands of Longhorn Band members during his tenure and remained a fixture at campus football and basketball games, concerts, rehearsals, workshops and weekly band staff meetings for the nearly 30 years after his retirement. His leadership was integral in establishing the reputation of the Longhorn Band as "The Showband of the Southwest."

"Vincent R. DiNino is to the Longhorn Band what Darrell K Royal is to UT football," said Robert Carnochan, current director of the Longhorn Band. "Through his charm, wit, dedication, passion, talent and desire, he built our program to what it is today. He had the unbelievable gift to recall the most minute details about nearly all of the thousands of members of the band who came through the doors of UT."

DiNino graduated in 1941 with a B.S. in music education from the University of Minnesota, where he met his wife, Jane Dahlgren, who died in 2008.

He went on to a 30-year career in UT Austin's School of Music, serving as the first full-time director of the Longhorn Band. Under his leadership, the band acquired Big Bertha, the world's largest bass drum; adopted its now well-known western-style burnt orange uniforms, complete with faux Stetsons; marched in the inaugural parades of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; and opened itself up to women and minorities in 1955.

Jane and Vincent DiNino also served on the board of directors of the Longhorn Alumni Band, which established the Jane and Vincent R. DiNino Honorary Scholarship and the Jane Dahlgren DiNino Scholarship for Longhorn Band members. In 2000, the couple donated $500,000, half the funds for establishing the Vincent R. and Jane DiNino Chair in Music, to benefit students of the Longhorn Band.

Having recently returned to his home in Bay City, Texas, after an extensive stay at St. Luke's Medical Center in Houston, Mr. DiNino was surrounded by family at the time of his passing in the late evening of Sept. 9.

He is survived by his second wife, Timothy Ann Hardy Sloan.

"All of us are the inheritors and beneficiaries of his energy, his integrity and his standards. We will always be grateful, and we'll do our best," said Mary Ellen Poole, director of the Butler School of Music, which is home to the Longhorn Band.
