Funeral services for Opal Joyce Cooke Danner, 76, of Palacios were scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Palacios with the Rev. Ray Boykin officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing.
Mrs. Danner was born Jan. 21, 1909 in Thomas, Okla., and died Sept. 3, 1985 at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.
Survivors include her husband, Samuel Danner of Palacios; two daughters, Anita Joyce Frankson of Bay City and Myra M. Brhlik of Palacios; two sisters, Lillian Miller of St. Louis, Mo., and Margie Porteus of Paonia, Colo.; two brothers, Howard Cooke of Lake Jackson and Ross F. Cooke of Henderson, Nev.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers include Frank Paul Brhlik, Jr., James Maynard Frankson, Russell Brhlik, Donald Stephen Frankson, Samuel Patrick Frankson, Allan Miller and Don Tyler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Palacios Medical Foundation.

Ellsworth “Ed” Dare, 73, passed away January 9, 2016. Memorial Service to be determined in Bay City, Texas. Memorials may be sent to Cancer Care Services of Hood County; American Cancer Society – Hood County Chapter, or American Heart Association. Ed was born June 27, 1942, in Gloucester, MA. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school, and served 16 years destroyer duty, seeing action in the Cuban missile crisis, and four tours of duty in Vietnam. Ed was a Mason; past Master of the Bay City Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite of Houston; member and past president of Bay City Town Clowns Shriner unit. It was in Bay City, where he worked at the South Texas Nuclear Operation Project for 19 years, he retired in early 2000. He was a member of Triple Cross Cowboy Church in Granbury. He enjoyed fishing with his boys. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edith and step-father, Maynard Tucker Jr.; sister, Margaret Fonte; and brother, Forrest Dare. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Geri; sons, Edward Dare and Andrew Dare; brothers, Fred (Donna) Tucker and Maynard (Leslie) Tucker III; sisters, Eileen (Howard) Lodge and Helen (Rick) Acosta; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Lee Daugherty Sr., 77, of Bay City, Texas, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. He was born on March 12, 1938, in Edinburg, Texas, to the late James and LaFaye Reese Daugherty. Jack served in the Army in Verona, Italy, where he played saxophone in the 4th Army Band. He owned his own crane company in Freeport, Texas; Morgan City, Louisiana; and Deridder, Louisiana. Jack served as past president of the Bay City Country Club. He participated in numerous car shows and loved building cars with his son and grandson. Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Jack is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jim Daugherty. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gayle Davis Daugherty; son, Jack Daugherty Jr. and wife Dawn; grandchildren, Zachary, Garett and Blake; niece, Cathy Twilligear and husband Steve of Corpus Christi; nephew, Jimmy Daugherty of McAllen; and great-nieces, Kaylee and Terri. Mildred Sadie Daugherty, 84, of Matagorda, TX, passed away November 1, 2015. She was born August 10, 1931, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late John Heselbach and Mildred Taylor Heselbach. She served her country in the U.S. Arm, and later worked as a Lab Tech, at Matagorda General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Daugherty; and a son, Charles K. Daugherty. Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Daugherty of La Porte, TX, Docia Phillips of Wilberton, OK, Gloria Pfaff of Matagorda, Susan Davis of Wilberton, OK, Eileen Stout of Daisy, OK and Melanie Wolf of Arlington, TX; son, Michael Daugherty of Matagorda; 29 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Calvary Baptist Church for Harold Davis, 52. The Rev. W. L. Hughes, pastor of the church, officiated.
Mr. Davis passed away Sunday at Memorial Hospital in Houston. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Ethel Davis of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Adell McGaughey of Bay City and Miss Kelly E. Davis of Houston; three brothers, G. W. Davis of Bay City, George C. Davis of Angleton, and Frank Crawford of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Pallbearers were Edgar McGaughey, Billy McGaughey, Cleveland Davis, Mac C. Davis, Tommy Littlejohn, George W. Jeanes, and Harry Brady.

A memorial service for Richard Willie Davis, 59, will be held on Dec. 31, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Agape Family Outreach Church, located at 1811 Newsome Blvd. in Palacios.
Richard was born Dec. 31, 1955 to Frances and Archie Davis, Sr. in Palacios and he passed away on Dec. 13, 2015 from a lengthy illness with great dignity and strength.
He graduated from Palacios High School and went to work at various jobs in Palacios, San Antonio, Austin (Dell, FIC) and Freeport (USC, Enduro).
Willie loved fishing with a passion, and was passionate about playing the drums and guitar. Music was part of his life and played avidly, determined to be the best of anything with his six fingers.
He was preceded in death by his father, Archie Davis, Sr.; stepfather, Vernon Matthews, Sr., and brother, James Davis.
He leaves to mourn his loving mother; brothers, Paul (Mattie), Archie Jr., Barbara, Hurbert, Kenneth, Betty K (Donald), Vernon Jr. (Cindy); his lifelong partner, Jennifer French; her brother, Ava, stepdad, Terry Mandrell; father, Steve French; sister, Annie (Josh); brother, Chris; a host of nieces and nephews; daughters, Camilla (Dietrich), Tunisia (Lauren), Tiffany (Ronald), and son, Corey; four grandkids, and one on the way; and his lovin g pride and joy Lillie.

Fern Louise Powell Deans, 74, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, the 29th of October, 2015, surrounded by family, after a courageous and hard fought battle against heart, brain, and pulmonary issues, over the last three years, and especially the last six months, until the Lord called her to her Eternal Home in Heaven. Fern was born on the 3rd of June in 1941, in Bay City, TX, to Marianne Lorenzen Powell and Samuel L. Powell, and grew up on her namesake grandmother, Fern Lorenzen’s, family ranch outside Edna, TX. She went to Vanderbilt Elementary School and High School in Edna, as a proud cowgirl, and played clarinet in the band, along with many other school activities. She graduated in the top 5% of her class, in 1959. She later went to Houston Business College and completed her courses in less than 2 years, again with honors. She first went to work as a secretary for a patent lawyer firm in downtown Houston for several years, and was then later recruited to NASA in the legal office, by their patent attorneys, where she began her 25 year career at NASA, in 1965. Fern quickly moved from the legal patent office to Apollo Lunar Mission planning office, and later Apollo Lunar Science Experiment office, whose staff was responsible for experiments in the CSM/ SIM Bay and the Lunar ALSEP experiment stations, left on the surface during the six lunar landing missions, and the lunar rover vehicle used on the moon for extended exploration away from the lunar lander on the last three Apollo missions, 15, 16, 17, over the time period of July 1969 to December 1972. It was during this time, Fern met her future husband, Philip M. Deans, who was working with the Engineering Directorate, support to these same engineers on the Mission Planning and Lunar Science Experiment and Apollo Program Offices. After about a year of courtship, they established a wedding date, on August 15, 1969, after the successful completion of the Apollo 11 First Lunar Landing, on July 20, 1969, and the safe return of crew back to earth landing on July 24, 1969. After the Apollo Program ended, Fern’s group supported the Skylab 3 Manned Missions of 30, 60, 90 days duration, and they performed all kinds of biomedical experimentation on the astronauts, for long duration zero gravity effects on crew performance and external science studies of the earth observation, with an EREP package, similar to the earlier lunar orbiter SIM Bay experiments of the lunar mapping and observation, and the Apollo Telescope Mounted Camera for long duration studies of sun, solar activities and space radiation effects. She later worked in the Medical Directorate with the doctors and engineers, monitoring the overall crew health, mission monitoring, medical facilities for health monitoring of astronauts, their families, and the NASA workforce, for annual monitoring and any space degradation effects of fl own astronauts. It was during this time, Fern got to experience one of her most exciting events as a test subject, due to her small size, 5 percentile (Asian female), to test out the lower body negative gravity suit/rubber pants with waste band pressurized to force/redistribute blood back to extremities and head, to condition from zero-g back to 1 G during re-entry from spaceflights. Fern was fortunate to work in the most creative and innovative part of NASA’s human spaceflight programs with some outstanding people, in all the areas of space disciplines, engineering, science, and medical, on all the major programs. During this creative time, women made significant strides forward and were really the glue and executive secretarial support arm to their managers, and they were merged into the “60’s Chicks Professional Group, totally recognized and supported by the JSC top center management as the movers, shakers and expediters to process all their extensive official documentation, directions, and administrative functions. While working for NASA, Fern, Phil and son, Jeff, were able to go to KSC and witness Apollo 15 and 17 launches. They were fortunate to go to the second return flight of Space Shuttle/Orbiter STS-127, which was launched on July 4, 2009, as a family, with son, Jeff, and two granddaughters, participate and witness the last Space Shuttle/Orbiter STS 135 final flight, in the program before premature retirement. Fern and Phil celebrated her 74th birthday, back on June 3, 2015, and their 46th wedding anniversary on August 15, 2015, while in Cornerstone LTAC hospital, in Webster, TX. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, therapists and staff of Cornerstone LTAC ICU, and Memorial Hermann SE ICU for their compassionate care. Outside of NASA, Fern supported her husband, Phil, and their family, with her youthful love of ranching, animals, particularly the baby goats, sheep, calves, cow dogs, and horses. Phil and Fern were involved in ranching operations for over 35 years, in Houston and Jackson Counties, 35 year members of Farm Bureau, TSCRA, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as lifetime members, enjoying many rodeos and entertainers over those 25 to 35 years. It was during their ranching in Grapeland, Houston County, that they fell in love with Bluegrass and attended the First Salmon Lake Labor Day Festival started by Floyd and Fanny Salmon, in 1976, and never missed a Festival, until Fern had a fall and brain surgery, back in April 2013. Fern and Phil have also been lifetime members of the Bay Area Bluegrass Association (BABA) in League City, held at the Civic Center for over 29 years, and have supported monthly shows and FOTS festivals conducted by BABA, over the years. When they would visit Phil’s family, back in his hometown, of Wilson, NC, they would always try to make a weekly show at the Bluegrass Barn, near New Hope where Phil grew up. Fern was preceded in death by her grandparents, Fern and Andrew Lorenzen; her parents, Sam and Marianne Powell; several great aunts, aunts and uncles and cousins. She is survived by her husband, Philip M. Deans; son, Jeffrey L. Barbara was born in Bay City, Texas on August 14, 1918 to James and Loraine Nolte Bruce.
She was a resident of Angleton since 1953; a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Freeport; a member of Daughters of the King and she loved to play bridge. Her husband George Deerman and three sisters preceded her in death.
Survivors are: son, David Deerman and wife Freddie of Harlingen, Texas; grandsons, Kevin Deerman and wife Alicia of Galveston, Brian M. Harvey and wife Linda of Ft. Worth; granddaughter, Kimberly McClearly and husband Derrick of Angleton; four great grandchildren, Jesse Harvey, Collin and Conner Golightly and Dax McCleary; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was born Jan. 3, 1914, in Palacios [Matagorda County, Texas], to the late Robert Lee and Maggie S. Noland Moore. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

EDNA—Carl Knight Dewett, 72, of Edna died Saturday in a San Antonio hospital. He was born April 22, 1915, in Athens, Texas, son of the late William A. and Martha H. Madden Dewett. He was a retired potman from Alcoa Aluminum and moved to Edna in July 1980. He married the former Alberta R. Moore on Oct. 21, 1935, in Greenwood, Miss. Surviving are his wife, Alberta R. Dewett of Edna; a daughter, Martha Loretta Wright of Palacios; two sons, Carl Kennon Dewett of Smithenville, Kelly Knight Dewett; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Monday at the Baptist Temple Church of Edna with the Rev. Howard Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Hawley Cemetery near Bay City under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home of Edna.

Sheriff J. B. (Jack) Cole said this morning that a prisoner in the Matagorda County Jail took his own life Monday night. Cole said the incident occurred around 10:00 PM. Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton, with Matagorda County Health Doctor Charles A. Shoultz, held the inquest at the scene. Hinton has ordered an autopsy. Sheriff Cole indentified the man as Bishop Dickey.
Dickey was placed in the jail only Friday on a drunk charge, according to Cole. The sheriff said one of the prisoners in the jail found Dickey’s body and called for radio dispatcher Elmer Cornett, who was on duty at the time. Cornett then called for the sheriff and other units of the department and units from the Bay City Police Department, Cole stated. Sheriff Cole said Dickey was 47 years of age and gave his address as 407 Ave. H in Bay City. Dickey slashed his wrist using a “double-edged razor blade,” the sheriff said.
Funeral services for Dickey were held this afternoon at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.
Dickey was survived by: his mother, Mrs. Archie Dickey of Bay City; and, five brothers, Melvin, Hugh, Vernon, Nolan and Forrest.
Pallbearers at the funeral were Joe Ducroz, Henry Harvey, Wade Ashcraft, Carl Derkas, Earl Gibbens, and Mac Dornak.

Mary Phillips Domstead, 72, of Boerne, Texas, took her last breath on Earth, and her first breath in Heaven, on October 31, 2015. Mary was born on December 30, 1942, to the late Wallace S. Phillips Sr. and Mozelle S. Phillips, in Palacios, Texas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by husband of 54 years, Gary Domstead; daughter, Kim Domstead Tinnin of Fair Oaks, Texas; son, Greg Domstead of Victoria, Texas; granddaughter, Ashley Brooke Tinnin (Robert Grayson) of Spring Branch, Texas; grandson, Riley Craig Tinnin of Lubbock, Texas; and great-granddaughters, Tori Brooke Tinnin and Teagan Brooke Grayson. Mary is also survived by her sister, Betty Sue Reeves; brother, Pat (Lindy) Phillips; sisters-in-law, Laura Phillips Lawson, Carolyn Boshart and Lisa (Ronnye) Rode; brother, Ira (Myrtle) Phillips; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lela Barnhart; and brothers, Wallace Phillips Jr., Earl Phillips and Gene Phillips. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Taylor Bros Funeral Home, in Bay City, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Taylor Bros Funeral Home, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Rodney Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. PALACIOS - Joe Fred Drastata, 91, of Palacios passed away on
Feb. 4 in El Campo. He is survived by his wife Marcella (Margie) Drastata; son, Douglas Drastata of League City; daughter, Janet Drastata Bliss and husband Bill of Bastrop; son-in-law, Steven Morrison and wife Patt of Clear Lake; brother, William (Bill) Drastata and wife Pam of Clear Lake; sisters-in-law, Anita Drastata of Taiton, Annie Drastata of El Campo, and Bessie Juranek of Ganado; grandchildren, Wayne Drastata and wife Debbie, Tammy Morrison Bolander and husband John, Michele Morrison, Ryan Bliss and wife Sarah, Kevin Bliss and wife Becky, Darin Bliss and great-grandchildren, Mason Drastata, Tyler Davidson, Drew Davidson, T.C. Bliss, Rivers Bliss, Maggie Bliss, Hayden Bliss, Noah Bliss, and Madeline Bliss. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews. Joe is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diana Drastata Morrison and siblings, Betty McPherson, Martha Kotlar, Georgie Duyka, Frank W. Drastata and Jim Drastata. Visitation begins at 2 pm Monday, Feb. 8 at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo with a Rosary being recited at 7 pm. Funeral mass begins at 10 am on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at St. John Catholic Church in Taiton with burial to follow.

Samuel Maurice Danner, 98, of Palacios passed away October
10, 2007. He was born in Thomas, OK on April 30, 1909. He
was 1 of 6 children born to the late Lillie B. and Henry L.
Danner. He married his high school sweetheart, Opal Joyce
Cooke right after their high school graduation and they
remained in love for 63 years, until she died of cancer. He
later married Lurlie McCall, but they only enjoyed being
together for 10 years before she died. Sam, as he was
called, went to work in the gasoline recycling industry
shortly after his marriage, and they made several moves
before coming to Texas to work for H. B. Zachery at the
Francitas Gas Plant located in Deutschburg. In the early
1950's he went to work for Trunkline Gas Company and was
supervisor for a plant in Illinois, one in Shaw, MS for
several years, and then in the same capacity at Kaplan, LA.
While living in Louisiana, they traveled weekends to
Sargent, Texas and Sam built a small house there. Duke
Energy contacted him when he retired, and he worked for them
as a consultant at several pipeline plants in the Laredo
area. They sold the house in Sargent and built a log cabin
on 12th Street in Palacios to be near their only two
daughters. Sam lived there alone for several years before
his physical health began to deteriorate, so he sold the log
cabin and built an efficiency- apartment off the patio from
his daughter, Myra. Sam has lived the last few years in the
Matagorda House Healthcare Center of the Legacy campus in
Bay City, Texas. His exceptional and alert mind never failed
him as he kept abreast of all the world happenings and all
the sports events. Sam was only a high school graduate, but
was always studying about machinery and ways to better
educate himself. He was a "do it yourself" guy who could fix
anything including the early radios and T.V.'s . His best
asset was that he was a decent, honorable, kind man who
loved his family above all else. During their early years
raising a family the funds were tight, and they lived
frugally, but the family of four was very happy and had fun
together. Church was an important part of their life. The
attached picture was taken two months before his 98th
birthday.
