Final Services Held Friday Morning For Mrs. Edna M. Bachus

Funeral services were held Friday morning, July 15, at the Palacios Funeral Home for Mrs. Edna Mae Bachus, daughter of the late Joe B. and Rosa Lee Robison, with Rev. Rayford Harris of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

She was born May 7, 1898, in Limestone County, Texas and passed away July 14, 1966, at Wagner General Hospital.

She was married in Temple, Texas, on October 4, 1917, to Henry Lee Bachus and they made their home there until 1941 when they moved to Palacios. Her husband preceded her in death on December 21, 1950.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edna Lee Williams of Palacios; two sons, Joe E. Bachus of Houston and H. L. Bachus, Jr. of Palacios; her step mother, Mrs. Alma Robison and half brother, J. B. Robison of Groesbeck and an aunt, Mrs. Ben S. Layne of Mart.

Bertha Louise Backen

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Louise Backen were held at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, May 23, in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of Millard and Harriet Viola Draper Lipscomb, she was born October 31, 1889, in Chester, Illinois. A resident of Palacios since 1906, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, an honorary member of the Wednesday Club, former member of the Tres Palacios Garden Club and Wagner General Hospital Auxiliary. She had also been a worker in the Presbyterian Mexican Mission. She passed away Saturday, May 20, in Wagner General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl and son Carl Jr.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Keith ad Ruby Backen of Sweeny and two grandsons.

Larry Keith Backen

The many Palacios friends of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Backen deeply sympathize with them in the loss of their infant son, Larry Keith, born January 9th, and died Feb. 15, in St. Joseph’s hospital in Houston. Funeral services were held here Tuesday morning at the Palacios Funeral Home and burial made in the Palacios cemetery.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl M. Backen and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Church.

Henry A. Bachus

Funeral services for Henry A. Backhus were held Monday, October 2, at 4 p. m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. J. C Henning officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A son of Fred and Anna Lippen Backhus, he was born in Oldenburg, Germany, on January 26, 1880. A retired farmer, he had been a resident of this area for approximately 40 years. He died Saturday, September 30, in San Antonio after a lingering illness.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sophia Backhus of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Sophia Bentz of Lincolnville, Kansas; Mrs. Ida Nusz of Sweeny and Mrs. Clara Spree of Palacios; two sons, George and Henry Backhus of Conroe; two brothers, Bill Backhus, Sr. of Hope, Kansas and John Backhus of Tampa, Kansas, 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Sophie Backhus

Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Backhus, 94, were held at 4 p. m. Sunday, June 18, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Ralph M. Walters officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios from 1906 to 1969 when she moved to Kansas, she died Friday, June 16, in Lincolnville, Kansas.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Herman Bentz of Hillsboro, Kans., Mrs. Harvey Nusz of Sweeny and Mrs. Tommy Sheeran of Hebbronville; one son, George Backhus of Conroe; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Mae Herrinton of Kansas, Mrs. Martha Teetzen of Tampa, Kans. and Mrs. Clara Riffel of Rock Island, Ill. and one brother, Carl Kuhn of Hope, Kansas.

John Baggett

The remains of John Baggett, aged 24 years, a victim of Saturday night’s storm in Angleton, were brought here over land by the Houston Funeral Home, Tuesday, and interred in the Palacios cemetery, under the direction of Duffy and Rittenhouse.

Services were conducted by Rev. Carroll B. Ray of the First Baptist Church.

Teresa Ann Baggett

Funeral services for Teresa Ann Baggett, 20, were held Sept. 22 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery.

Miss Baggett was born Dec. 22, 1964 in Palacios and died Sept. 9, 1985 in Dallas.

She graduated from Palacios High School in 1983 where she was a cheerleader. She was named Athlete of the Year in 1982 and Most Likely to Succeed in 1981. She received the basketball award in 1982 and was first runner-up in the Miss Palacios School pageant in 1982. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Palacios.

Survivors include her parents, Julia Monarrez and Irving L. Baggett, Sr. both of Palacios; three sisters, Delia Luna of Lake Jackson, Emma Mendoza and Peggy Baggett of Palacios; a brother, Irving L. Baggett Jr. of Palacios; and maternal grandmother, Chonita Flores of Palacios.

Selema Bailey

Funeral services for Selema Bailey, 97, of Palacios were held Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Meaders officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery. She died May 19 at the Palacios Healthcare Center.

A resident of Palacios for 50 years, she was born Jan. 8, 1905 in New Iberia, La., to the late Noah and Alta Hebert Broussard. She was a Catholic.

Survivors include four sisters, Aline Bickham of Palacios, Olive Burke of Orange, Joann Yendry of San Antonio and Alice Stuart of Bay City; three brothers, Wallace Broussard of Port Lavaca, Sidney Broussard of Midfield and Noah Broussard of Bay City; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by step-mother Verna Broussard; sisters Agnes Carvell, Linda Sarkala and Carolyn Jones; brothers, Lawrence, Robert, Oliver, Edward and Alvin Broussard.

Pallbearers were Melvin and Bob Bickham, Gilbert Flores, Jr., Sidney Broussard, Roy Kelly and Ray Sexton. Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.

Final Rites Held Here Saturday For William T. Bailey

Funeral services for William Thomas Bailey were held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, December 8, at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for 23 years, he was born December 3, 1877 and died December 6 in the Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Selema Bailey of Palacios; one daughter, Mrs. Doris Gailbreath of Amarillo and one son, Walter Bailey of Fairfield, Calif.

Funeral Services Held Here Sunday For Mrs. Blake Terry Baker

Funeral services for Mrs. Blake Terry Baker were held at the First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A daughter of William S. and Emma L. McGurt Terry, she was born in Airmont, Mississippi on January 24, 1886 and died in the Ganado hospital Friday, March 11, after a lengthy illness.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Peoples of Coffeeville, Mississippi and Mrs. Blanche Bowers of Bay City; one brother, R. E. Terry of Palacios.

Charles T. Baker Buried Here Sunday

Funeral services for Charles T. Baker were held here Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Aubrey C. Maxted and Dr. Allen O. Webb of Bay City officiating. Mr. Baker passed away suddenly at his home here Friday night.

Born February 25, 1882, at Highlander, England, Mr. Baker was a veteran of World War I and was decorated by the British, American, French and Belgium governments. He had lived in the U. S. for some time and was employed by Cook Construction Company.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Blake Terry Baker, and two sisters, Miss Anne Baker of New York and Mrs. Bert Tullett of Bergen, N. J.

Pallbearers were A. P. Castorino, Walter Poling, Bert Hayes, R. E. Terry, Verner Bowers and Weldon Bowers, A Masonic burial was conducted at the cemetery here by the local lodge.

Joseph Dee Baker

Funeral services for Joseph Dee Baker were held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, May 29, at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of Joe S. and Susan Haynes Baker, he was born in Wilson County, Texas, on December 15, 1885. A resident of Palacios for several years who resided at Leisure Lodge, he was a retired musician. He passed away at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday, May 26, in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Miriam Falks of Palacios, Mrs. Clarice Bulian of Spicewood, Texas and Mrs. Alta Reno of Austin; one son, A. S. Baker of Kingsville; one sister, Mrs. Lura Smith of Karnes City; 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Graveside Services Held Here Sunday For Edward B. Baldree

Graveside services for Edward Bates Baldree were held in the Palacios Cemetery at 2 p. m.  Sunday. Rev. Rayford Harris, of the First Baptist Church, conducted the services.

A resident of Huntsville at the time of his death, he lived in Palacios several years. He was born July 11, 1886 and died in the VA Hospital in Marlin on Friday, March 17.

His survivors include two sons, Stephen Baldree of Athens and George Baldree of Palestine, a sister, Mrs. B. L. Gillespie of Palacios and a brother, A. R. Baldree of Huntsville.

S. H. Baldree

S. H. Baldree died at his home, 3 miles northwest of Palacios Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1931, of a heart attack, while at the supper table. He was born in Navarro County, January 8, 1879. He came to Palacios during the last days of November in 1916, and has continued to make this his home. He is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls, who have the deepest sympathy of the entire community.

Mr. Baldree had been a member of the Methodist Church since early in life. He was also a member of the fraternal order, I. O. O. F. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Carroll B. Ray, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and remains interred in the city cemetery.

Mrs. Baldree and children are very grateful for the kindness of neighbors, friends, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and the needed assistance given them during their bereavement, and thank one and all.

William Henry Baldree

William Henry Baldree died suddenly of a heart attack just before noon Wednesday, June 7, 1933, at his home 3 ˝ miles northwest of town.

Mr. Baldree was born in Navarro County, Texas, Jan. 6, 1859. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Funeral services were held today (Thursday), at 2:30 p. m., conducted by Rev. Paine of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Carroll B. Ray, of the First Baptist Church, after which remains were interred in the Palacios cemetery, under the direction of Duffy-Rittenhouse Undertaking Company.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved in this hour of sorrow so suddenly thrust upon them.

Mrs. C. R. Baldwin - Emma R. Baldwin

Mrs. C. R. Baldwin, who was taken to the St. Joseph's Hospital, Houston, about three weeks ago, succumbed to her ailments Thursday of last week. The sorrowing husband brought the body to Palacios Friday and funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Mr. Hester, were held at the cemetery. Mrs. Baldwin has been suffering dreadfully for months, but it was hoped this operation would allow her to regain at least in part, her health.

Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin and their two sons, Albert and Harold came to Palacios from Kansas more than fifteen years ago and have lived here ever since. For the past few years they have been on a farm about eight miles west of town. Beside the husband and two sons and their families, there is a host of friends to whom the sympathy of all is extended.

Harold Reid Baldwin

Funeral services for Harold Reid Baldwin were held Tuesday, May 29, at 3:30 in the afternoon in the Nazarene Church with the Rev. Harold Carlisle and Rev. Eugene Dish officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late Charles R. and Emmer Reid Baldwin, he was born in Merengo, Ohio, on June 22, 1896. A retired carpenter he had been a resident of Palacios for 65 years. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the U. S. Army, and was a charter member of the local Nazarene Church. He died Monday, May 28, in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta Grace Baldwin of Palacios, one daughter, Mrs. Irene Sicard of Plaquemine, La., six sons, Oliver R. of Deway, Okla., Harold of Temple, Carl of Palacios, Donald of Angleton, Joseph of Altus, Okla. and James of Huntsville, 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

James Baldwin
(December 27, 1936 - July 20, 2017)

James Louis Baldwin, 80, of Somerville, Texas passed away July 20, 2017. He was born December 27, 1936 in Palacios, Texas to Harold Reid Baldwin and Alberta Grace Sealock.

James was born and raised in Palacios where he had many fond childhood memories of adventures with his siblings and school classmates. He met his wife, Dorothy Ellen Jewell, at school, became high school sweethearts and have been married for 60 years. They had three children. He served in the US Army for several years, then worked most of his life as a Pipe Fitter.

James is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Oliver Baldwin, Howard Baldwin, Joseph Baldwin and Donald Baldwin; sisters, Irene Sicard and Lillian Baldwin. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Baldwin; son, James Baldwin, Jr. and wife, Kimberly Baldwin; daughters, Darla Salazar and husband, Aurelio Salazar, and Susan Reese; brother, Carl Baldwin and wife, Hardie Ann Baldwin; grandsons, Matthew Salazar and James Andrew Salazar; granddaughters, Lan Salazar, Rosemarie Salazar, and Samantha Salazar; great grandson, Leon Murillo; many nieces and nephews, and several really great longtime family friends and classmates.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the Palacios Funeral Home with graveside services following at Palacios Cemetery with Pastor Bob Keprta officiating. Pallbearers are James Baldwin, Jr., Matthew Salazar, Andrew Salazar, James Larry Jewell, David Jewell and Leroy Jewell.

Mrs. Francis H. Bales

Funeral services for Mrs. Francis H. Bales were held at the Rendon Funeral home at 8:45 a. m. Monday, July 24, followed by Requiem mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 9 with Father Michael Harrold officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios since 1951, she was born June 22, 1913 in Alice, Texas, and died at 4:45 a. m. Saturday, July 22, in Wagner General Hospital after a short illness.

Survivors include her husband, Homer A. Bales of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Baldemar Garcia and Miss Janie Trevino; two sons, Alfonso Trevino and Joe Trevino, all of Rothbury, Michigan; one brother, Joe Heredia of Seymour, Texas and seven grandchildren.

Homer A. Bales

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 8 at the Palacios Cemetery for Homer A. Bales of El Campo with Rev. John Parks of New Life Assembly officiating.

Mr. Bales, 75, died on Thursday, March 6, 1986 at Memorial Hospital of El Campo after a sudden illness. He was born on March 3, 1911 to Marvin Campbell Bales and Nevada Etta Walker in Mount Vernon, Mo., but lived in El Campo most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Chupe Bales of El Campo; one step-son, Harvey Ringo of Huffman; three sisters, Ola May of Leesville, Judy Bekendorf of Mathis and Opal Ingham of Clarksville, Okla.; and one brother, Cecil Bales of El Campo. He is also survived by two step-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Orville Bard, Robert Taylor, Bobby Taylor Jr., Emmett Clary, Calvin Ringo and Dennis Smith.

Mrs. Lillie Lee Bales Held Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Lillie Lee Bales were held at 4 p. m. Tuesday, October 8 at the Palacios Funeral Home with W. C. Hagemeier of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born July 5, 1900 in Dover, Arkansas, a daughter of James M. and Ela C. Freeman Taylor, she died Monday, October 7, at her home of a heart attack.

She is survived by her husband, Homer A. Bales, son, Mike Perez, of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Abbie Anderson of Midfield and May Taylor of Palacios and brother, John Taylor of Palacios.

Graveside Services Held For Casper D. Ballard January 28

Graveside services for Casper Duane Ballard were held in the Palacios Cemetery at 10 a. m. Friday, January 28, followed by interment.

A retired painter, Mr. Ballard was born on April 3, 1885 in Bayport, Michigan. He died at his residence in Palacios Monday, January 24.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Nellie Wolfe of Saginaw, Michigan.

Laverne H. Barber

Funeral services for Laverne H. Barber, 59, were held Aug. 15 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Barber of Barber Road, Palacios, was born Dec. 12, 1923 in Palacios and died Aug. 13, 1983 in a Houston hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Palacios and a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, S. Daniel Barber of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Norma Bradley of Duncanville and Mrs. Linda Park of Mesquite; one son, Daniel Ray Barber of Austin; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Brown of Houston; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
