W. V. Bachelder

Funeral services for W. V. Batchelder held here Saturday morning in the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. M. A. Travis, of Alamo, Texas. Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery with the impressive Masonic service, conducted by the Lodge of this city.

W. V. Batchelder, son of W. H. Batchelder, of Palacios, was born in Sheridan County, Kansas, Jan. 24, 1887 and died in the hospital at Bay City, Thursday, July 14, 1937. He resided in Kansas until coming to Texas, in October 1909.

In 1914 he was united in marriage with Miss Grace Shuey in Houston, Texas, where he was in service in the shipyards during the World War. The death angel claimed his wife and infant son in 1921.

For a number of years he resided at Collegeport, where he was engaged in the mercantile business and was one of the towns most highly respected and beloved citizens.

In July 1934 he married Miss Vera Williams, a member of the Collegeport school faculty who with the aged father, step mother and a number of brothers and sisters survive.

Mr. Batchelder was one of the few of whom it can truly be said—“Enemies he had none.” He was loved and respected by all. Friends from all over the county, as well as adjoining counties, were here for the last sad rites of this man who was a friend to all, a kind neighbor, and a faithful servant called to his Eternal Home.

Among the out-of-town relatives and members of the family here for the funeral services Saturday were Misses Thelma and Irene Batchelder who are attending A. and I. College at Kingsville; Rev. and Mrs. Elroy Weikel, of Happy, Texas; and Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Batchelder, of Blanks, La.

Death of Mr. David Baxter

From the Palacios Beacon

Mr. David Baxter died at the family home in this city, Friday, Nov. 27, at 4 o’clock p. m., after a protracted illness. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Saturday at 4:30 p. m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. B. A. Myers, followed by interment at the city cemetery. Deceased was born at Matagorda in this county June 25th, 1856, being 57 years, 5 months and 2 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Baxter was one of the very few remaining natives of Matagorda county of antebellum days. In 1881 Mr. Baxter married Miss Carrie Isabel Spoor, also a native of this county, and who survives her husband together with six children, Clara, Ross, Stanley, Margaret, Thelma and Meta, all of whom reside at Palacios; also by two sisters, Mrs. D. M. Franz of this city, and Mrs. A. D. Fisher of Bay City, and one brother of Center Point.

In 1903, Mr. Baxter was conducting a mercantile business and was the postmaster at Tres Palacios in this county. Palacios had then but started to grow, and seeing large opportunities ahead for the town, Mr. Baxter moved his store to this place and established himself in the general mercantile line, being the second business place opened in this city. His store was located on the corner of Main and Second streets on the lot now occupied by A. J. Tatum’s residence, the old store building being removed last year when Mr. Tatum began work on his home. Some four years later Mr. Baxter closed out his stock and retired from the mercantile business.

The Baxter family are therefore among the early pioneers of Palacios and have seen the town grow from its beginning to its present splendid proportions within the past ten years. The sons, following in the footsteps of their father, are among the enterprising and progressive merchants of Palacios. In their bereavement the families have the sincere sympathy of all the people of the city, among whom they are so generally known and held in high esteem.

Mr. Baxter was well known in Matagorda where he was born and raised. His wife was a sister of Mrs. A. A. Duffy and he was an uncle of Robert, Henry and Collins Baxter of this place.

Matagorda News and Midcoast Farmer, December 19, 1913

Obituary

Bro. Baxter has been a member of the Methodist church eighteen years during which time he served several years as steward in the church of which he was a member. His illness was long and severe. For some time it has been known by all that the sickness was until death, but when it came it had lost none of its terror to his loved ones. While his illness was unto death to his body yet we thank God through our Lord Jesus Christ that it was not unto eternal death. We fully expect to meet Bro. Baxter some sweet day in that land where no death can ever come. May the good Father comfort the loved ones who are so stricken in this hour, and may we all strive to served the same God that was the God of our deceased brother, that it may be said of us when we are gone that ours shall be the blessings of Heaven, and not the course of the sinful.

B. A. Myers, pastor.

Death of Baby Beauchamp

The death angel came to the home of Mrs. Theresa Beauchamp, and took away her precious baby, Walter Jasper, on that afternoon of June 6th. The life was brief, being only one year and eight days. Funeral services were held Wednesday, the 7th. The casket was borne to the grave by eight little girls, where a brief service was held. Interment was made in the City cemetery.

The whole community deeply sympathize with the mother and other bereaved ones in their hour of sorrow. But the words of Jesus come to us at this time, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God.”

The poet expresses these words in an old hymn;

“Asleep in Jesus! Perfect rest,
Whos waking is supremely blest!
No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour
That manifests the Saviour’s power.
