Auto Accident Proves Fatal to Mrs. Dapron
Other Occupants of Car Are Improving; Both Cars Badly Damaged

Palacios' first real serious auto accident occurred last Friday afternoon when Mrs. Walter Dapron and two sons and her mother, Mrs. E. R. Allen, were the victims of a smash-up caused by being crushed into by another car.

Mrs. Dapron died from her injuries Sunday night. Mrs. Allen and the two boys were not so seriously injured and are now getting along as well as could be expected.

The accident happened at the intersection of Lucas Ave. and the highway and it seems that as Mrs. Dapron, who was driving out the highway, started to turn onto Lucas Ave., that "Buster" Chamblee, who was coming behind her, (not knowing she was going to turn,) attempted to pass her with the above result.

Both cars were more or less damaged and the Chamblee boy, we learn, received some slight injuries.

The crash was heard for a block or more and a large crowd was soon as the scene. The injured ones were immediately taken to their homes where physicians and friends did all they could to alleviate the suffering, and to assist in caring for their needs.

Esther Allen Dapron

Esther Gladys Allen was born in Cherokee, Oklahoma, Jan. 4, 1909. She moved with her parents to Palacios in September, 1921. She attended Palacios High School, and was known and loved by all her class-mates.

She was married to Walter Dapron, Oct. 24, 1925. She was a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, and was loved by all who knew her. She became a Christian at the age of ten years, and united with the First Baptist Church of Palacios several years later, during the pastorate of Rev. J. A. Derrick. Her life since has been that of a devoted Christian. A daily habit which she followed was the reading of God's Word.

Mrs. Dapron is survived by her husband, three children, her mother, father, one brother, and a host of relatives and friends.

Edward Bily officiating, following a short service at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel in Bay City at 9:15 a. m. Friday, with Rev. C. J Martin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born August 29, 1874 in Ithaca, New York, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Rowles, she was brought to this area at the age of 8 months and had been a resident of Matagorda County ever since. She was married to Ples Dawdy, who preceded her in death in 1930. She passed away Wednesday, March 25, in Matagorda General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

P. R. Dawdy

Pleasant Richard Dawdy was born in Wharton County, Texas, August 6, 1860, and died near Blessing, Matagorda County, Feb. 18, 1930. Left without a mother at the age of twelve years, he made his home with his grandmother in the Colorado bottoms and early began to make his own way in the world. The cattle industry was the only one in this part of the country, so naturally he could probably hardly remember when he could not ride a horse.

In his younger years, he was a “trail rider” going as far north as Dakota. His first wife was Miss Ellen Elliott, who died leaving him one son, Jack Dawdy, a cattle man of Matagorda County.

April 26, 1898, he married Miss Elizabeth Rowles. To this union were born a daughter, who died in infancy, and a son, P. R. Dawdy, Jr., of Houston. Both sons and his wife and one brother, E. E. Dawdy, survive him.

For many years Mrs. Dawdy was foreman on the A. H. Pierce home ranch, until he went into cattle business for himself.

In 1904 he moved his family from his ranch near Stewart Switch to Palacios.

Mr. Dawdy immediately identified himself with the business interests of the growing town. He helped organize the Bank and was a Director until his failing health compelled him to give up some of his activities. Having moved to his farm near Blessing in 1913, the long ride in the inclement weather was prohibitive. His loved and trusted horse was his ideal of a means of transportation.

Trained in the hard school of severe pioneer conditions, his inherited nobility of character, developed an almost ideal man. As neighbor, friend, business associate, and in the more tender and intimate relations of the home, Pleas Dawdy, as he was known to his friends, was ever the Christian man, the Savior described in the sermon of the Mount. He judged not his fellows, was willing to go the second mile, was most unselfish and humble, the Golden Rule was ever the rule of his life.

In this world of subterfuges, it was most refreshing to have known a man so sincere and true and of such simple honesty.

His habits of industry and thrift and his business sagacity made him a successful business man with whom it was a privilege to be associated. His gentleness, his chivalry, his courtly manners, his thoughtful kindness, his punctilious promptness to fulfil an appointment, his loyalty to his friends and to duty, singled him out from the ranks.

Mr. Dawdy’s going is a distinct loss to the community, both for his activities, as well as his example to the rising generation. The sincere sympathy of his many friends is extended to his bereaved wife, children and relatives.
