Hugh Boyd Douglas

Hugh Boyd Douglas was born October 5, 1868 at Bullard, Cherokee County, Texas, the son of Joseph P. Douglas and Ann Loftin Douglas. His parents were pioneers to East Texas, and his father was a member of the board which drafted the original constitution of Texas. He spent his boyhood at Bullard, and his early manhood at Jacksonville, Texas. He was educated in the public school at Bullard and at Add-Ran College in Thorpe Springs, which later became Texas Christian University and was moved to Fort Worth.

He was married March 31, 1897 to Miss Addie Clark at Bartlett, Texas, and to this union were born three children: Calvin P. Douglas of Palacios, Mrs. Dorothy Franks of San Antonio, and Miss Katherine Douglas of Palacios, all of whom, with his widow, are left to mourn his loss. Besides these members of his immediate family he is survived by two grand children: Jimmie Hugh Douglas of Palacios and Bobby Franks of San Antonio; a sister Mrs. W. F. Haden, and a brother Allen D. Douglas, both of Jacksonville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

After his marriage he lived at Jacksonville for about ten years, except for two years spent at Edna and Eagle Lake. After a short time in Sayer, Oklahoma, he moved, with his family, to Palacios in August 1908, where he made his home until the time of his death, July 4, 1935.

Early in life he became an employee of the Southern Pacific Railway company as telegraph operator which work he continued until 1916 when he entered the Civil Service of the United States government as Rural Letter carrier on the route out of Palacios. He continued this work until his retirement by the government November 1, 1933 at the age of 65.

He was a lover of music and during his residence at Jacksonville played the cornet in the city band and in the Orchestra of the Baptist church there. He was a true sportsman—hunting with his dogs being his favorite sport, while baseball was another absorbing interest n his life, and he played the game actively until failing health put him “on the bench,” and he served for several seasons as coach and manager of the Palacios Baseball Club.

He was particularly interested in young boys, and did all he could to give them a helping hand. He assisted several young men with their education and taught them the trade of telegraphy.

He lived a simple, unassuming life, his daily creed being to live the “Golden Rule.” All who knew him loved and respected him and his friends are many; but only those who were close to him were aware of the magnitude of his character, the heighth of his ideals, the brilliance of his mind, and the faithfulness and loyalty of his heart. The home that he has left is desolated, and in the lives and hearts of his loved ones is a vacancy that can never be filled. He was a devoted and faithful husband, a loving and indulgent father, a true and loyal friend. He lived a fine, beautiful life, and the memory of it is a source of consolation and inspiration to the grieving ones he left behind. Mere words are frail and inadequate equipment with which to produce the portrait of such a life, but Honest, True, Loyal and Sincere offer themselves as descriptive of him. Pretense had to place in his life—he was always himself and,

“True worth is in being—not seeming,
In doing each day that goes by,
Some little good—not in dreaming,
Of great things to do by and by.

“For whatever men do in blindness,
In spite of the fortunes of youth,
There is nothing so kingly as Kindness,
And nothing so Royal as Truth.”

He was laid to rest last Friday afternoon in the Palacios cemetery, under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home, with Rev. George D. McClelland conducting the services. Pallbearers were J. E. Robinson, Earl Mayo, and members of the baseball club: Ernest Hogg, Dean Merck, Price Barnett, and Walter Snider.

Out of town relatives and friends here for the funeral were Mrs. Dorothy Franks and son Bobby, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Haden, Mr. Allen D. Douglas, Mrs. Jannie Greggard, Mr. Jack Douglas, all of Jacksonville, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Haden and daughter, Mary Edna, of Galveston, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Stokes and Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Clark, of Dallas and Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Dean of Alvin.
