Lillie Mae Petteway Boyd
October 8, 1917 - November 13, 1970

Sister Lillie Mae (Petteway) Boyd was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Petteway, October 8, 1917 in Cedar Lake, Texas.

She joined the Bethlehem Christian Church at an early age in Cedar Lake, Texas. She moved to Freeport, Texas and later united with the Bethel Baptist Church, under the Rev. W. J. Chiles.

She remained faithful as a member-serving as President of the B. T. U., Vice President of the Senior Usher Board, secretary of the Senior Usher Board, secretary of the Senior Misson and was active in all other organizations of the Church until her death.

Sister Boyd was summoned home to be at rest on Friday, November 13, 1970 at 8:30 A. M. in the John Sealy hospital of Galveston, Texas after a short illness.

She leaves to mourn her passing, a husband, Mr. Rufus Boyd; a son, Hannes Prince; three step-sons; two step-daughters; a sister; two brothers; an aunt; three grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews and other relatives and friends.

Fred D. Hawkins, Sr.

September 1, 1907 – May 14, 1976

Fred D. Hawkins, Sr., the second son of Shed and Bettye Hawkins was born September 1, 1907 at Cedar Lane, Matagorda County, Texas.

He united with Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas at an early age. He served faithfully as Elder and Trustee until his departure from this walk of life.

On August 29, 1927, he met and married Miss Thelma Miles. To this union six children were born, one of which preceded him in death.

On July 25, 1939, he married Miss Maude Austin and remained a faithful husband until death.

He is a member of the Sunshine Order of the Progressive Order of Pilgrims Camp #88 at Cedar Lake, Texas and a member of the Gulf Coast Lodge #272.

Elder Hawkins departed this life Friday, May 14, 1976. He leaves to mourn his passing, a devoted and loyal wife, Mrs. Maude Hawkins, two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Thymes and Mrs. Margaret Monroe of Cedar Lane, three sons, Rev. Fred Hawkins of Dallas, Rev. Herbert Hawkins of Yoakum and Rev. Shedrick Hawkins of Los Angeles, Calif., two stepdaughters, Mrs. Gertrude Williams of Cedar Lake and Mrs. Addie Smith of Sargent, two step-sons, Mr. Sidney Mark of California and Mr. Phillip Mack of Brazoria, one sister, Miss Phoebie Hawkins of Los Angeles, Calif., 39 grandchildren, 6 greatgrandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service Tuesday, May 18, 1976, 2:00 P. M., Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas, Rev. Lloyd Brown, officiating.

Rev. Herbert Lee Hawkins, Sr.

Funeral services for Rev. Herbert Lee Hawkins, Sr., 73, of Yoakum, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, Texas with the Rev. K. W. Bree, eulogist. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

He was born in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, March 28, 1928 to Fred Hawkins and Thelma Miles Hawkins, and passed away Friday August 24, 2001 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

He attended public school in Sargent and Cedar Lake, Texas. Later, after being called to preach the gospel in 1959, Hawkins attended Union Theological Seminary, Houston, Texas. There he received a Bachelor of Theology Degree in 1961. He later earned his Master of Divinity Degree and Doctor of Divinity Degree from Union Theological Seminary in 1975.

His first pastorship was to Vine Grove Christian Church in Live Oak, Texas. Thereafter, he served as pastor of Prosperity Baptist Church in Ganado, Texas. He later served as pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Yoakum, Texas from 1973 until 2001.

His professional career included being instructor of Homilectics for several years at Guadalupe College, Cuero, Texas. In 1970, he was elected to the Van Vleck ISD school board where he served one term.

Survivors include: wife Ella Mae Urps Hawkins of Yoakum; one son, Rev. Herbert Hawkins Jr. and Theresa of Bay City; stepmother, Maude Hawkins of Sargent; four grandchildren, Patrick and Jennifer, Angela Damon and Phoebe; two great-grandchildren, Charlene and Jamar Hawkins and one play-granddaughter, Audrey Brown; one brother, Shadrick Hawkins and Heddie; two step-sisters, Gertrude Williams and Addie Clara Smith; three brothers-in-law, Lester Urps, Eddie Urps and A.J. Urps; two great-aunts, Mary Lou Hawkins and Lou Ella Hawkins; and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Monroe and Bessie Times; one brother, Fred Hawkins Jr.: and one step-brother, Sidney Mack.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Phoebe Hawkins Jones

Funeral services for Phoebe Hawkins Jones, 84, of Los Angeles, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Saturday at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with Rev. Paul Cross of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Cuero officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home of Bay City.

Mrs. Jones was born Oct. 9. 1909, in Cedar Lake to Shedrick and Betty Petteway Hawkins and died Jan. 30, 1994, at her residence in Los Angeles, Calif.

She was a former resident of the Cedar Lake Community.

Survivors include two nephews, Herbert Lee Hawkins Sr. and his wife, Ella Mae of Yoakum and Shedrick Hawkins and his wife Heddie of Los Angeles, Calif.; a niece, Bessie Hawkins Monroe of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Maude Hawkins of Cedar Lake and a host of great-nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives including the Petteway family and friends in California and Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shedrick and Betty Petteway Hawkins; two brothers, Fred Douglas Hawkins and Washington Hawkins; a niece Margaret Hawkins Monroe and a nephew, Fred Hawkins.

Pallbearers are Shedrick Hawkins III, Otis Hawkins, Mike Hawkins, Timothy Hawkins, Leroy Hawkins, Anthony Hawkins, Herbert L. Hawkins Jr. and Tommie Monroe

Peggy Smith Knowles

 

Funeral services for Peggy Smith Knowles, 37, of Bay City, will be held 1 p. m. Saturday at Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, with the Rev. Oddie Fields Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake.

 

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

 

Mrs. Knowles was born Jan. 5, 1951, in Alvin, Texas, to Matthew and Evangie Lee Merchant Smith Sr. and died July 2, 1988, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City.

 

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

 

Survivors include her husband, Edwin Knowles Sr. of Key West, Fla.; two daughters, Marteisa and Evangie of Bay City; a son, Edwin Knowles Jr., both of Bay City; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Smith Sr., of Bay City; nine sisters, Mrs. Elnora “Betty” Moore, Mrs. Jessie Lee Brooks, Mrs. Nancy Lee Wright, Mrs. Alma Lois Spiller, Mrs. Elma Gladys Allen, Misses Sharon LaVon Smith and Kennetha Michelle Smith, all of Bay City, Mrs. Grace Ann King of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Patricia Maudine Mayberry of Clute; five brothers, Matthew Smith Jr., Roosevelt Smith, Arthur Smith and Purvis Smith, all of Houston, and William Charles Smith of Bay City; one grandson, Christopher Blake Smith of Bay City; 39 nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and a family of friends.

Albert Petteway
October 23, 1910 - June 26, 1991

Albert Petteway was born on October 23, 1910 in Sargent, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. David Petteway.

He attended public school in Sargent, Texas and then attended trade school at Jarvis College.

He was converted at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Sam Brown, Bethlehem Church. He united with the St. Emanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. L. Randon. Years later, he united with the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. H. Beck. His leadership as Sunday School teacher and deacon will always live in New Jerusalem Baptist Church through the lives of those he taught and worked with in the Lord's service.

He united in marriage to Emma L. Phillips in 1938.

He departed this life at 8:30 p. m. on June 26, 1991, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Survivors include a devoted wife, Emma Petteway, Freeport; one foster son, Harry Johnson, Freeport; two brothers, Joe A. Petteway, Los Angeles, Calif., Otis J. Petteway, Sr., Cedar Lake; two sisters, Lovie P. Boone, Galveston, Martha M. Roberts, Houston; 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Beverly Ann Petteway

Beverly Ann Petteway was born to Ruby and Otis Petteway on July 6, 1949 in Cedar Lake, Texas.

Reared in a home with deep religious convictions, Beverly joined the St. Paul Baptist Church in 1959 and was baptized by the Rev. Willie Gibbs.

At St. Paul, she served as a member of the choir.

She graduated from the Sweeny High School and the University of Houston.

Beverly expired Wednesday, June 2, 1976 at 7:30 P. M.

Her survivors are: mother and father, Ruby and Otis Petteway; six sisters, Jewel, Vera, Theola, Marsha, Gwendolyn, Jacqueline; one brother, Otis Jr.; one nephew, Kenneth; one brother-in-law, Othell Johnson; aunts, uncles and a family of families.

Emma Petteway

Emma Petteway was born on December 20, 1913 in Matagorda County to Mrs. Frances Gee Phillips and Mr. Napoleon Phillips.

She attended public school in Sargent, Texas and Houston, Texas. At an early age, she united with Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake. She united with the St. Emanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. L. Randon. Years later under the leadership of Rev. A. H. Beck, she was one of the founding members of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she was active on the Usher Board, Mission Society, and Sunday School. She was also a member of the Eastern Star #75.

She united in marriage to Albert Petteway in 1938 who preceded her in death.

She departed this life, on November 7, 1994 in Angleton, Texas.

Survivors include, one foster son, Harry James Johnson, Freeport; two brothers, Clarence Phillips, San Francisco, Calif., and J. W. Phillips, Los Angeles, Calif.; 3 grandchildren, Felecia Johnson, Frederick Johnson, and Nicole Johnson, Fort Worth; 3 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

John Dane Petteway, Sr.
Saddled Up October 24, 1942 - Bedded Down January 29, 2018

On October 24, 1942, a son was born to Wilmer & Eliza Petteway, who they named John Dane Petteway. John D. grew up in the Cedar Lake community, attended Bethlehem Christian Church and confessed Christ at an early age; where he was baptized by the late Reverend Lloyd Brown. He later became a member of the Bethlehem Deacon Board. John D. graduated from O. H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, Texas. he worked several years at Dow Chemical Company then later took over ownership of Petteway Cement Contracting from his father.

John D. loved rodeos and also found pleasure fishing, hunting and raising animals for the livestock show. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer Petteway, Sr. and Eliza Petteway and brother, Wilmer Petteway, Jr.

John D. leaves to cherish his memories; his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Georgia Mae Petteway of Cedar Lake; sons, John D. Petteway, Jr. (Ana) of Cedar Lake and Robert J. Petteway (Stanshelle) of Angleton; daughters, Clarissa Petteway-Smith (John) of Brazoria, Darla Petteway and Yvonne Williams (James) both of Rosharon; a grandson he raised, John Edward Petteway (Michelle) of Lake Jackson; brother, Frank H. Petteway, Sr. (Marsha) of Brazoria; grandchildren, Mikeal, Seven, Dominique, Shemerrylyn, Shawn, Tremain, Jarmain and Darrwin; 20 great-grandchildren; special cousins, Reva Jean Givens, Evelyn Wiggins and Virginia Law; good friends, Herman "Honcho" Fields, Clifford "C. Otis James Petteway, Sr.
September 16, 1919 - May 20, 2009

Otis James Petteway, Sr. was born in Sargent, Texas on September 16, 1919 to David Petteway (d. 1941) and Annie Lee Fletcher Petteway (d. 1953). He was the grandson of John Petteway (born 1825 in North Carolina, arriving in Texas in 1846). He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Beverly Ann Petteway (d. 1976) and Jewel Petteway Johnson (d. 1992). Also, preceding him in death were his three brothers David James (DJ), Albert and Joe and his five sisters, Mabel, Sarah Lee, Theola, Martha and Lovie.

He attended public schools in Sargent and Cedar Lake, Texas. He was introduced to Ruby Lee Mack by his older brother,  Joe Petteway, a teacher/principal at Jerusalem School He married Ruby Lee Mack on July 18, 1843 at Jerusalem Baptist Church.

At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Christian Church where he served as a Trustee, President of the Usher Board, and Chairman of the Deacon Board.

He was a civic-minded member of the community and served as President of the PTA at O. H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, Texas. He was the Cedar Lake Area Coordinator for Jackson Electric Company.

After his mother passed away, he continued, for many years, the operation of the family business (Petteway Grocery) with his wife, Ruby Lee. In the entrepreneurial spirit of his late mother, he owned and operated a mobile park, an auto repair shop and a septic tank installation business, while managing the family farm. For many years, he was employed in the construction industry with various companies including several Dow USA contractors.

He worked many jobs and ran several businesses in order to take care of his family, which included sending all of his children to college and at one time supporting three daughters in college simultaneously.

He peacefully departed this earthly life on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Park Plaza Hospital in Houston, Texas. He leaves to mourn his wife of 66 years, Ruby Lee Mack Petteway of Cedar Lake, Texas, one son Otis Petteway, Jr., (Velda Elaine) of Cedar Lake, Texas, five daughters Vera Petteway-Nyormoi (Okot) of Durham, North Carolina, Theola Petteway of Houston, Texas, Marsha Petteway-Giles (Elmo) of Carrollton, Texas, Gwendolyn Petteway of Pearland, Texas and Jacqueline Petteway of Fresno, Texas, one uncle Lee Fletcher (Mozell) of Houston, Texas, and one sister-in-law Frances "Nannie" Williams of Cedar Lake, Texas.

He died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas
Funeral service for Wilmer Petteway, Jr., 71 of Brazoria will be Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Church in Brazoria with Elder Roland K. Hendricks officiating. Burial will follow at Petteway Cemetery in Cedar Lake, Texas.

He died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was a member of Greater Mt. Zion Church. He was a former member of St. Joseph Full Gospel Church where he served as an usher
and was also a former member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He retired from Dow Chemical Company after 28 years of service. He loved to spend quality time with his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and going to rodeos. His greatest joy was serving others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Wilmer Petteway, Sr. and Eliza Petteway; grandparents, John and Rachel Mack; uncle, DeSoto Mack and aunt, Zelene Wyche.

Hannis J. Prince, Sr.

Hannis J. Prince, Sr., 64, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 1997, at his residence in Freeport.

He was born May 30, 1932, in Eagle Lake, and was a member of First United Missionary Baptist Church of Freeport. He had served in the U. S. Army.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ephern Prince Sr. and Lillie Mae Petteway-Boyd.

He is survived by his stepfather, Rufus Boyd of Freeport; stepmother, Tessie B. Prince of Cedar Lake; his wife, Kathleen Prince of Freeport and her son, Samuel Ray Nelson of Tennessee Colony; daughter, Jessie M. Parker of Lake Jackson and her mother, Ellener M. Woodard of Bay City; son, Pastor Hannis J. Prince Jr., and his wife, Evangeline, of Lake Jackson and daughter, Cheryl Prince and their mother, Ann Prince of Freeport; stepson, James A. Potts of Clute and his mother, the late Becky Prince.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Coneic Parker-Brown, Keturah Parker, Daniel Prince, Dominique Prince and David Prince, all of Lake Jackson; Donovan James Potts; Joshua Hickey-Prince of Freeport, and the late Jordan Ray Nelson; great-grandchild, Jaelin Brown of Lake Jackson; brothers, Ephern Prince Jr. and his wife, Gracie, and John L. Prince and his wife, Pat, all of Cedar Lake; stepbrothers, Johnnie Boyd of Galveston, Harris Boyd and wife, Rose, of Houston and “Cooter” Boyd of Galveston; stepsisters, Ruth A. Gooding of Houston, Alma Robinson and husband Ervin, of San Antonio and Myrtie Edwards and husband, the Rev. Ira Edwards, of Michigan; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Peggie Smith
November 25, 1894 – June 21, 1977

Peggie Smith, the daughter of the late Jim Monroe and Katy Green, was born in the Cedar Lane Community on November 25, 1894. Peggie's Mother expired when she was very young and she was reared by foster parents, Shedric and Betty Hawkins.

She was converted and joined Berean Baptist Church at an early age. Later she moved her membership to Bethlehem Christian Church.

On Tuesday, June 21, 1977 at 3:33 A. M. she departed this life at the Bay Villa Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She leaves to mourn her passing, a husband, John Smith, nine sons, Rev. J. A. Wrenn of Galveston, Wesley of Sweeny John, Jr. of San Antonio, Arthur of West Columbia, Matthew, Marseen, R. L., A. J, all of Bay City, Franklin of Long Beach, Calif., two daughters, Pearline Merchant and Lucinda Smith of Bay City, one foster sister, Mrs. Phoebe Hawkins of Los Angeles, Calif. 66 grandchildren, 79 great-grands, and, and a host of other relatives and friends.
