Colored Teachers Institute, Matagorda County, Sept. 24th

By Mrs. Claire Pollard, County Superintendent

At 9:30 a. m. call to order by Mr. Asa Hilliard, principal of Booker T. Washington school. Song by the institute, “The Negro National Anthem.” Invocation by Rev. Cash Brown of Bay City. At this time Mr. Reynolds and superintendent Pollard spoke in memory of Prof. A. G. Hilliard, Sr. (deceased). A spiritual was sung by the institute, “Steal Away to Jesus.” Then came the enrollment and institute fees.

The following teachers were enrolled: Mrs. Willie V. Cooper, Mrs. Nina Brown, Mrs. Polly Stratton, Mrs. Leola Boone, Mr. Arthur Boone, Mr. Alonzo Stevens, Miss Grace Williams, Prof. Isaac Williams, Prof. Jas. A. Reynolds, Mrs. Washington, Mrs. Venora Flowers, Miss J. A.
