NEW CHURCH CEMETERY

To find New Church Cemetery: from Groveton to Apple Springs, turn left on FM 2501, go approximately 5 miles, turn right on New Church Road.  This road leads to the cemetery located on right side of the road. 

There are three cemeteries in this general area. When early locals asked where a funeral was to be held, the reply was at the "cemetery where the new church is". In time, between 1895 and 1900, the name became the New Church Cemetery, although the deed records probably show it as the Williamson Cemetery. Earlier, a Mr. Williamson had a little girl who died and was buried on his property. There is no marker for the child and no dates are available. A non-denominational church was built there, facing west. When the Iris schoolhouse burned, classes were held at this church. A new school was build and the first church was torn down. A second church was built at the same location, except it faced east. A third church was built.
