TREVAT CEMETERY

From Groveton, Texas take U.S. Highway 287 south about one mile to F.M. 2262.  Turn left and travel about 12 miles to the white Trevat Church of Christ on the left.  Trevat Cemetery is located to the right of the Church.   From Apple Springs, travel south approximately 7.3 miles on F.M. 357 to a dead end.  Turn right onto F.M. 2262 and go 1.3 miles.  The cemetery is on the right.

According to Ora Nell Trevathan Draper, Trevat Cemetery was named for the Trevathan Family of Thomas Leander and Sarah Roberta “Sena” Gallion Trevathan, pioneer settlers in Trinity County.  National Archives records on the Civil War show that Thomas Trevathan enlisted January 20, 1864, as Pvt. Co. E. 7 Reg’t Texas Mounted Vols. and served in Capt. Kirksey’s Co. Greens Brigade.  The Trevathans had a cattle ranch and farm and raised 14 children in the Trevat Community.  Both Thomas and Sena are buried in Trevat Cemetery.  The oldest, legible marker is that of Sena Robertia Trevathan, born March 2, 1826, died May 8, 1886.

Rhoda Trevathan, Mother of Thomas Leander Trevathan, Born 1780, died 1862, is thought to be buried in Trevat Cemetery.  The supposed burial spot is marked by a plain concrete slab with no inscription.  Ruth Trevathan Delvige’s book “Trevathan Family History and Their Descendants” describes Rhoda as “…a good woman…who was a midwife and rode horseback to tend to the sick and the needy.”

L. D. Smith copied the Cemetery markers in July 1973.  Lt. Col and Mrs. Joseph W. Hensley copied the markers in May 1990 and the list was updated from funeral directors’ records.  Lyndel Lester Rollins and Ellen Pyle confirmed earlier records and listed new markers in April 2004.  Sixty unidentified grave markers were counted.  Many of these sites have a metal “Oakley-Metcalf Funeral Home” marker but no other identification.

Trevat Cemetery Homecoming is held annually on the last Sunday in April.  Family members and guests share a covered dish luncheon under the Pavilion and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Donations are needed and are used throughout the year for the upkeep of the Cemetery.  Contributions can be mailed to: Brenda King, Treasurer, at 498 Mt. Carmel Lufkin, Texas 75904 or Sandra Hensley, President, at 3704 Trailhead Ct. Cedar Park, TX  78613.

For the compiled list, both Trinity County Cemeteries ©1980 and the second edition Trinity County Texas Cemeteries © 1992 both published by Trinity County Historical Commission (TCHC) were consulted
