Harford County was formed on 22 March 1774, when Maryland was still a British colony governed by a colonial administration. Prior to that date, the territory that now makes up Harford County was part of Baltimore County.
The county was named in honor of Henry Harford, the last proprietary owner of the British colony of Maryland.
Bel Air is the county seat.
