CALDWELL, CRAIGHEAD, SHIFLETT posted by Donnie R. Shiflett on Saturday, October 4, 1997

I am looking for information concerning my grandmother, Leslie Nelson CALDWELL CRAIGHEAD SHIFLETT, born January 1902. She met my grandfather John Lawrence SHIFLETT while he attended VPI/SU around 1920 or so. She evidently was married previous to that for I have an uncle William Craighead, born in 1919. She worked in the laundry at VPI/SU. Her and my Grandfather had the following children (all Shifletts): Leroy, John (both born in Smyth County),Paul, Elmer, Cornelius,Ralph, James,Eugene, Douglas, and Danny (born in Augusta County, I assume).

BUCHANAN, CONNELL, STEELY, TURPIN, WALKER posted by Bob Mordt on Sunday, October 5, 1997

I am looking for information on my wife's ancestry. She has some information that an Esther BUCHANAN, daughter of a William BUCHANAN, married a William STEELY in Wytheville, VA about 1790. They had three children and William was believed to have died soon after the children were born. We would like to know if any fact can be found on William and Esther's marriage, or the birth of any of their children, John Buchanan STEELY who is believed to have married a WALKER, Elizabeth who married a Solomon TURPIN and a third child, Cynthia, who married a Pierce CONNELL. We have found people who claim to be descendants of all three of these children. My wife is a descendant of John Buchanan STEELY. We know that Esther and all three children moved to Kentucky and have found information on all three children in Wayne County and surrounding counties in Kentucky in the early 1800's. We tried to trace the lineage further back in Wytheville, but did not succeed. It is our understanding that Wythe County was formerly a part of Augusta County and wonder if there are any records of either Steelys or Buchanans there. Bob Mordt

GREGG, KIMSEY, LANE posted by Judy Kimsey on Monday, October 6, 1997

I'm looking for any and all information on Benjamin KIMSEY (b. 1725, Scotland, d 1807 Buncombe Co., NC) and his son, also Benjamin KIMSEY (b. 1750, Ireland, d. 1805, Buncombe Co., NC), and the second Benjamin's son, Thomas KIMSEY (b. 1770, Augusta County, VA, d. 1860, Macon Co., GA. He married Nancy McClure). The second Benjamin may have married Agness LANE or Margaret GREGG. In 1768, at least one of the Benjamins was in Augusta County, because a warrant was sworn out for his arrest for being a "common liar and disturber of the peace." I would appreciate any information anyone has. I'm particularly interested in who both of the Benjamin's wives were, when and why the elder Benjamin left Scotland, and whether or not the name "Kimsey" derives from MacKenzie (everyone says it does, but I have yet to see anything that substantiates the claim). Thanks!!!

HOUSTON, MCCLESKEY, PAXTON, RHEA, TURK posted by Margaret Adell McCleskey on Monday, October 13, 1997

I am looking for information on the parents of my 4g-grandmother Isabella ?? Her surname could have been RHEA or PAXTON. She was born 1750-1755 in Augusta Co., VA. She later, but not in Augusta Co., married James MCCLESKEY abt. 1782. She is believed, by some, to be the daughter of Samuel PAXTON who died in 1793 [and was the son of Samuel PAXTON, the emmigrant, who came to Pennsylvania from Northern Ireland in abt 1740] and the brother of Samual PAXTON who died in 1809 in Georgia. I believe that her mother was a RHEA and that her maternal grandmother was a TURK. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Samuel PAXTON, the emmigrant, is believed to be the grandfather of John PAXTON who was the father of Elizabeth PAXTON who married Samuel HOUSTON in abt 1783 and was the mother of Sam HOUSTON, Hero of San Jacinto and first president of the Republic of Texas.

STATON, WASHINGTON posted by Gary L. Davis on Monday, October 27, 1997

Hi, My great grandfather, George Washington STATON was born in August of 1833 in Augusta County. He had a brother named Reuben. I think his father might have been Thomas O. STATON but I'm not sure. The family apparently moved out of the County in the 1850s or 1860s. No trace of them in Augusta census (as far as Icould find.) They moved to Wood County and setled in Lubeck, near Parkersburg. That's where I was able to pick up the thread. One fascinating clue I came across is Staton Falls near Buena Vista. I have been told that there are a lot of Statons from the early 1800s around Lexington, in the Brownsville (?) section.
