In loving graditude and veneration this humble memorial is raised to the memory of Mary Pendleton, formerly Burnley and first Overton, who closed her temporal life at Bear Island 25 Sept. 1835.... Mrs. Mary O. Meux consort of Dr. Thomas Meux and daughter of Colonel Hardin Burnley whose remains lie immediately to the west. She was born January 1800, married in June 1818 and died in September 1825 leaving three little children: Mary Jeanetta, Thomas and Anne.... Note: Hardin Burnley was a member of the Governor's Council and Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

John B. Fontaine Medical Director Calvary Corps Army of Northern Virginia. Died on the field of battle near Petersburg on the 1st of October 1864 in his 24th
year. A graduate of Medicine in 1860 he entered the Confederate
Service in April 1861, twenty years old, and reached the highest position
in his department. He had been spared through the dangers of many a
skirmish when he rode in the ranks with Stuart and Hampton, and at last
was mortally wounded while rendering professional aid to a dying general.

Condition & Description: This cemetery is in poor condition and has not been maintained in years. It is overgrown with briars, poison oak, and scrub brush. There is a large area of periwinkle as ground cover which is typical of old cemeteries. The cemetery is located in an area of cedars and hardwoods. They are traces of iris on some of the graves. There is only one tombstone in the cemetery which is broken. Which seems to be the result of vandalism. The inscription of that stone has been recovered and is listed below.

This ancient cemetery is in good condition and is being maintained. It is
believed to be the oldest cemetery in Hanover County, since it contains
the oldest known grave in the county, the grave of Temperance Harris.
The cemetery is located in a mature forest with huge hardwoods. The grave
of Thomas Harris is enclosed in a wrought iron fence. This ancient cemetery
is believed to be the largest private family cemetery in the State of Virginia.

A descendant brought suit against the property owner who had

This cemetery is well maintained. The cemetery is on a hill in a field with a big white oak tree in the center of the cemetery. The cemetery is approximately thirty feet by forty feet surrounded by a chain link fence. Some of the graves have concrete borders around them. It is a very beautiful and peaceful site for a cemetery.

Garthright House Cemetery
Located to the right of the house on Cold Harbor Road across from Cold Harbor National Cemetery
Condition & Description: The cemetery is enclosed by a brick wall with an iron gate for the entrance. There are no tombstones in this cemetery. The cemetery is being maintained by the National Park Service.
History: The Garthright House was the home of Miles Garthright and his wife Margaret E., who were living here at the time of the Civil War. In the settlement of Miles Garthright's estate, a 120 acres tract included the enclosed cemetery and a "strip of 20-ft. on every side of the enclosure is reserved as a family burying ground for all parties to this deed and their families."

There is only one stone in this cemetery. The cemetery is approximately fourteen feet by twenty-eight feet.
