"A list of Free Negroes and Mulattos Registered in the County of Lunenburg, Virginia, from 1815 to 1850.", Journal of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society volume 11, numbers 1 and 2, Spring and Summer 1990, was compiled by Willie Ragsdale, former Vice President of the AAHGS, Baltimore Chapter.


This information was abstracted from Will Book Number 5 in the Circuit Court Clerk's Office for the County of Lunenburg, State of Virginia.  I am grateful to Ms Grace T. Marshall of the Clerk's Office who led me to this register which is located in the back of the Will Book.

Peter Gillett, a fellow of light complexion, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 and one half inches high, a flat nose, two scars on the right side of his face, one which is a large bump near or about the temple, he has a broad flat face, and short hair, the said Peter Gillett was registered in York County the 20th of February 1815 as appears have this ask certification and certificate of his having been registered in this 5th day of Oct.1818. No. 1


John Banks, aged 27 years, brown complexion, 5 feet 6 inches high, born free in the County of Cromwell, by occupation a hostly, a scar on his left small finger and on his left cheek under the eye, is duly registered in my office. No. 2


Alexander Lester, Born free, aged about 22 years, about 5 feet high, brown complexion, a scar under his right eye, is duly registered in my office. No. 3


Betsey Lester, born free about 24 years of age, black complexion, a scar on her left hand, duly registered in my office. No. 4


Gilliain Kelly, a fellow about 23 years of age, black complexion, about 5 feet 8 inches high, a scar on his right hand, Ditto. No.5.


Lucretia Penn, formerly Mills, born free, age about 28 years, 5 feet 6 inches high, yellow complexion with a scar on her right thumb, Ditto, 5 December 1818. No.6.


Billy B. Cheatham, alias William B.Cheatham, born free, aged 23, 5 feet 5 inches and an half light, a bright mulatto, by occupation a planter, renewed in the office 15 December 1829. No 7.


Serky Valentine, born free, aged about a38, black complexion, about 4 feet 8 inches high, two scars on her hand, a large one and a small one. No. 8

Robert Penn, about 34 years of age, yellow is his complexion, 5 feet 4 and one half inches high, born in Dinwiddie County, with a scar on his left foot, one on his right forefinger and another under his right eye, was registered this 10th day of April 1820 in the presence of the court. No. 9


Lewis Evans, about 21 years of age last June, of a bright yellow complexion, about 5 feet 3 inches, a scar across the instep and toe of his right foot, was registered this 15 day February 1821 in the presence of this court. No. 10


Sally Lester, aged about 21 years, dark complexion, about 4 feet 10 or 11 inches high, daughter of Isham Lester and Elizabeth Lester his wife, born free, with one scar on her left wrist and arm, was order to be registered in open court this 12th November 1821. No.11


Jonathan Richardson, aged about 23 years of age, brown complexion, born free, about 5 feet 6 inches high, registered in open court 14 January 1822. No. 12


John Richardson, aged about 23 years of age, brown complexion, born free, about 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, with a scar on his great toe on his right foot and a scar on his right side of it, registered in open court 14 January 1822. No. 13


Harry, late the property of John Crymes of South Carolina, about 42 years of age, black complexion, about 6 feet high, who was brought into this state by Leonard Crymes, to whom custody the said Harry was committed agreeable to the last will and testament of the said John Crymes and in ordered to be registered in open court 13 May 1822. No 14


Berkey Walker, about 27 years of age, black complexion, about 5 feet 4 inches high, with a scar on the top of her head and one on her right arm, it
appearing to the Court that she was emanate updated by a decree of the County of Nottoway, in order to be registered in open Court, May 1822. No. 15


Griffin, aged about 45 years formerly the property of John Cocke, dec, of Nottoway County, about 5 feet 11 inches high, with a small scar on the back of his right hand, bright mulatto with long hair, a little gray, it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that he has been duly emancipated by a deed from James Mackarland law duly recorded in the county Court of Lunenburg registered the 10 December 1822. No. 16


Ellick, aged about 34, years formerly the property of John Cocke, dec., of Nottoway County, about 5 feet 8 inches high, with a scar under his right jaw, a bright mulatto, nearly ball, short hair, it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that he has been duly recorded in the County Court of Lunenburg registered the 10 December 1822. Jake Hichens, born free, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown complexion, with a scar under his left arm near the elbow and also a scar on the inside of his right ankle bone, was registered the 11 day of November 1822. No.18


William Samuel Cooper Allen, born free, age 18 years, a bright mulatto with a scar on the side of his chin, about 4 feet 8 inches high and Cooper open to be registered the 9th day of December . 1819. No. 19


Nancy Hitchens, age about 54 years, bight mulatto complexion, about 5 feet high with a scar on the right arm, occasion by inoculation for the small pose tolerable, straight hair rather gray, born free, registered in open Court 9 June 1823. No.20


Nancy Kelly, daughter of Nancy Hitchens, about 24 years old, light brown complexion, about 5 feet 3 inches high, born free, registered in open Court 9 June 1823. No.21

Charles Valantine, is of yellow complexion, his hair rather straight, about 5 feet 10 inches high, no visible scar, about 28 years of age, he was registered in open Court 8 March 1824. No. 26


Alexander Penn, age about 21 years, blue complexion, son of Charity Penn, born free in Dinwiddie County, about 5 feet 5 inches high, a scar on his right temple and a scar on his left arm, registered in open Court the 13 August 1821. No. 27

Polly Davis, age about 22 years, about 5 feet 2 inches high, yellow complexion and five fingers cut off the right hand, registered in open Court 12 August 1822. No.15

Jordan Kelly, a register, renewed this 3rd day of May 1824, he was first registered in 1818 and on addiction to the marks recorded, he has sense had a small piece of his right ear bitten off which is recorded, his register granted him this day. No. 32


Martha Richardson, daughter of Patty Richardson, about 20 years old, about 4 feet 8 or 10 inches high mulatto complexion, with a bushy head, born free, she was registered in open Court 9 August 1824. No. 33


Lucy Hobson, alias Eyes, of a bright mulatto complexion, about 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years old, straight hair with some grey ones in her head and a small scar over her right eye, registered in open Court 9 August 1824. No.34


A child of said Lucy Hobson, alias Eyes, about 8 months old of a bright mulatto complexion, blue eyes, named William Lewis, registered in open Court 9 August 1824. No. 35.


John Key, about 62 years of age, dark complexion, about 5 feet 8 inches high, some grey hairs in his head, very knock kneed, born free in the County of King & Queen, some of his fore teeth out, registered in open Court 10 May 1828. No. 36


Charles S. Kelly, of dark complexion, aged about 24, about 5 feet 11 inches high, some scars on his right breast, born free, registered in open Court 10 May 1825. No 37

David Valentine, aged about a 24 years, black complexion, 6 feet high, a scar on his right wrist, one over his left eye, also a scar on his left arm below his elbow, it appearing to the Court that he was born free, is ordered to be registered this 18 day of August 1825. No. 42


Patsey Evans, a daughter of Moses Johnson, a free man of color, she is about 30 years of age, brown complexion, about 5 feet 3 inches high, no scars, born free, is ordered to be registered this 14 day of May 1827. No.43

Chapman, a bright mulatto, about 21 years of age, born of fine parents, no scar, a mole on the upper lip of the right eye, about 5 feet 4 inches high, is ordered to be registered. Drury Cooper, a free mulatto born of fine parents in this County, who is about 24 years of age, 6 feet 1 inches high, has a scar on the upper part of the forehead and on the left hand at the root of the thumb, bright complexion, straight hair, is ordered to be registered, the Court certify that the said register is correctly made. January 8th, 1849. No. 141


Clara Ann Young, a free woman of dark complexion, about 27 years of age 5 feet 3 inches high, no scar, born of free parents, proved her freedom by the oath of John D. Bell and is ordered to be registered and the Court doth certify that said register is correctly made, June 11th, 1849. No. 142


Samuel M. Diarman, an infant son of Mary Doswell, who was emancipated by the will of David M. Doswell, dec., six years old in July last, a bright mulatto, about 3 feet 4 inches is ordered to be registered and the Court certify also the register to be correctly made, 13th August 1849. No. 143


Alpheus Addphus Gustavus, an infant son of Mary Doswell, who was emancipated by the will of David Doswell, dec., one year old in March last, has a scar on his right shoulder, yellow complexion, about 2 feet 5 inches high, is ordered to be registered and the court certify also the register to be correctly made, 13 August 1849. David Pettyford, a free mulatto, proved to be born of fine parents in the County of Mecklenburg, is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, has a scar on the forehead, bright complexion, straight hair, is ordered to be registered and the Court doth certify said register to be correctly made, October 8th, 1849.
