ABERNATHY Family

Burwell ABERNATHY is found on this document recorded in Brunswick County Virginia. This Indenture made this twenty first Day of August 1789 BETWEEN Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Morgan his wife of the County of Brunswick of the one part and Winfield Mason of the County of Dinwiddie of the other part, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty pounds do covenant grant bargain and sell unto the said Winfield Mason one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Brunswick containing one hundred & sixty six acres lying on the North side of Roses Creek, one hundreds part of which was formerly the property of Colling Camphill and by him conveyed to James Williams & by the said Williams to Thomas Morgan the other sixty six acres formerly the property of Colling Campbell and by him conveyed to the said Thomas Morgan reference being had to the records of Brunswick County Court will more fully appear and bounded as follows by the lines of Thomas Fulks; Edmund Harrison; George Vaughan and Masons own line . . . Signed by Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Morgan and witnessed by Burwell Abernathy, Robert Bolling Senior, and Richard Yates Bland. Brunswick County Court September 28th 1789. This Indenture was acknowledged by Thomas Morgan and recorded in Deed Book 14, page 528.

Burwell lived in Mecklenburg County where his daughter Lucy Abernathy marries William Daly on 10 Mar 1807 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. Burwell is the son of Liles Abernathy by the records of his estate settlement, Liles died in 1814. Burwell sells his home in Mecklenburg on April 1, 1818 and finishes settling his Father's estate then heads west. He will settle near the Richland Creek and Elk River in Giles County Tennessee.

According to Giles County records William Ragsdale sells to Burwell Abernathy 300 acres of land for $5,400 located on the south side of Elk River 0n 19 Dec 1818, the deed is registered 10 Oct 1819 and witnessed by William Daly, John Daly, Thomas Phillips. Burwell is found on the 1820 Giles County census with self listed as above 45 and two females above 45 and 14 slaves. His wife Nancy died in 1824 and was the first person to be buried in the Daly Family Cemetery. Burwell marries the second time Ruth Barnham or Parham in 1826. By 1836 he can be found on the Tax List of Giles County, District #1, owning 300 acres of land and 10 slaves. His will written in 1836 gave wife, Ruth the following slaves Patience, Jenny, Ellick, Ruffin, Eliza and Margaret; James, Eady and a certain part of Plantation. At wife's death to be divided between Thomas E. Abernathy (only son) and son-in-law William Daly (husband of Lucy Abernathy). Burwell was buried in the Daly Cemetery next to Nancy. His widow Ruth married in 1838 James Paine of Giles County.
