Notes

The purpose for this document is to record all documents where the name Rainey appears during the early period of Virginia. This will hopefully prove useful in Locating family members, and dating where they were – giving further direction about places and periods to look at other records not already reviewed.

1608-09. Donor. John Rany donor to Draper's Company subscription to Virginia Company. From VTLS Colonial Records on line files.

1636. Residence. A Roland Raine settled in Accomach Co., He was probably the Rowland Rayne who lived in New Forfolk Co., VA the following year, but this is not certain. Source: "The Rainey Times" (RT), Vol. 9 p. 65.

Page in Original Document: 385. Ship: Not listed. : Second entry. Reyney, William; original residence not listed, destination Virginia, page in original document 521. Ship not listed. According to his site on the net passengers would sign up weeks in advance for passage, entry here only indicated that money had been paid for passage.

1663-64, Jan 10. Witness. "A calf recorded for Will, the son of Lill Emberson, dtd. 10 Jan 1663-4, signed John Raney' (this appeared in the same paragraph where Rayney spelling was used, yet below the John Raney signature)" (see entry for 1662-63). 1679, May 6. Migration. "The Applewhaites of Isle of Wight, County, VA. appear to have migrated from Barbados, and they may be a branch of the Stoke Ashe family… In 1679, Mrs. Applewhaite, widow, was the owner of 169 acres in the Barbados, and on May 6th of that year, two servants of Mr. Henry Applewhaite, Luke Rainy and Dennis Burne, embarked at the Barbados in the ketch "Prosperous" for VA, David Fogg, Commander." 1720, Mar 10. Deed. Surry Co. Deed Book 7, p 322. 10 Mar 1720. William Raney and wife, Anne Raney, to Arthur Reding for 5 shillings … 100A on south side of Raccoon Swamp just below the Trading Path on south side of Nottoway River - being part of a greater tract belonging to John Jones whereon he now lives. Wit: William Rirke and Mary Whitton. Rec. 19 Apr 1721 .

1722, July 10. Will. Will of Wm. Rainey in Prince George Co. Will lists sons John, Roger, William and Richard; daughters Susannah, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Rebecca Lish (or Dish). According to Ray Sasser e-mail 24 Jul 1998: "land to son John Ranye, but if John has no heirs it is then to go to son Roger Ranye. He also leaves following: Susannah, various items; William, various items; Elizabeth, var. items; Roger two cows; Sarah great iron pot; Rebecca var. items; Richard 3 ells of Oznabriggs; rest to be divided between Roger, John, Rebecca and Susanna, who is to have 1st choice." 1726 (or before). Marriage. Phillippe Claude arrived in Jamestown on the La Peter and Anthony Sept 1700. He was a French Huguenot. He died before 12 Apr 1723. His wife was Hannah or Anna. They had two son. Joseph and Joshua. Hannah Married a Richard Ranye by Sept 1726.

1742, Oct. Baptism. Frances Rainey sponsored the baptism of Amy, daughter of Henry and Priscilla Mitchell Jr., b. 9 Aug 1742, chr Oct 1742, along with Arthur Redding and Rebecca Robert. 1742, May 17. Land Grant. To William Raney Jr., mentions wife Mary. 353A in Brunswick Co. on north side of Sittler Creek, formerly granted to Thomas Jackson on condition of payment. Grant mentions Thomas Wainwright and wife Ann, Ralph Jackson. (didn't write down source)

1743. Land grant. John Ornsby, 4054A in Amelia Co. on both sides of the Nottoway Road, between the branches of Deep Creek and the branches of Tommohilton Swamp beginning in Francis Rany's line where it crosses the Middle Seller Creek. Pat book 23, page 574, Amelia Co. 1743.

1744, 30 August. Land Grant. To Robert Bolling, Gentleman for Ten pounds fifteen shillings. 2750A in Prince George Co. upon the head branches of Sappone Creek and Rockey Run and on both sides of the Upper Nottoway River Road. 613A part therof being part of a patent for 2604A formerly granted unto the said Robert Bolling by letter 4 Aug 1721, the residue never before Granted. 1746, March 5. Deed. Indenture made the 5th day of March, 1746, between William Rainey of Surry Co., and Thomas Jones, for five pounds, conveying one/half interest in 275A, located on north side of the Little Creek of the Three Creeks (formerly in Surry County), and granted to James Judkins by Letters of Patent bearing date of 2 Feb 1724, and sold to the said William Raney by deed dated 18 Oct 1727. No witnesses given. Acknowledged in Court on 6 Aug 1747. Brunswick Co. Deed book 3, page 334.

1746, March 5. Deed of Gift. Deed of Gift dated 5 march 1746, from William Raney of Surry County, for natural love and affection I bear to my daughter, Anne Jones, wife of Thomas Jones, conveying one/half interest in 275A tract on north side of the Little Creek. 1751, Aug 22. Will. John Moore on the 1746 list of Titheables below Deep Creek in Amelia Co. A will of John Moor was proved 22 Aug 1751 and appears in Deed Book 1, Amelia Co. Francis Rainey was a witness of this will dated Dec 31, 1750.

1753, Nov 20. Will. John Rainey will wit. By John Dearmood, Cason Moore and Jean Dearmood. To son John Rany the plantation 110A… to dau Mary Rany… to son Thomas Rany 50A marshland at the salt ponds… residue to be sold and the money equally divided between my four children namely: Thomas, Betty, Amy and Anny Rany. Ordered by the court to be recorded for the benefit of the legatees. The executors refused to take on them the burden and the widow: renouncing the same. Princess Ann County. Included in same 16 Dec 1766, petition from Amy Rany showeth "that I am of age and humbly pray your worships to grant order for my part of my deceased father's estate". RT 1989, p 112.

Francis Raney to William Featherstone of Dinwiddie Co., VA dtd Dec 15, 1755, for consideration of 100 pounds, 200A on Middle Cellar Creek (Deep Creek), adjacent to the lower side of the branch, being land patent to said Raney on 20 June 1733, with all wood, etc. Wit. John Epes, Howel Featherstone, and Susanna Eps. Same Deed Book page 362… possession obtained by William Featherstone in presence of same witnesses on Dec 15, 1755. Deed ordered recorded on Jan 23, 1756, after Ann, Wife of Francis Raney, relinquished her right of dower.

John Rottenberry and wife Mary of Lunenburg Co., conveyed to Francis Rainey of Dinwiddie Co.,.. concession of 30 pounds …. 100A of land on the north side of the Roanoke River, on a fork of the Great Creek. Witnesses: John Ezell, Jr., Eph Marbry, Wl Bartlett. Signed: John Rottenberry.

1759, Apr 3. Land grant. Pat. Book 33, Vol. 2, page 557 (1756-61). Dtd 3 Apr 1759. Dinwiddie Co., 250A on both sides of Rocky Run. "George the 2nd under the seal of the colony of Virginia, 25th July 1746, granted unto Peter Rainey one certain parcel of land containing 250A lying in county of Prince George, now Dinwiddie on both sides of Rocky Run. Which said track of parcel of land was granted …. Of payment of quit rents and cultivating and improving as in ….. Whereas Roger Raney, in whom the right of said land is since become vested has failed to pay quit rents to make cultivation and improvements and William Raney has made humble payment to our Lt. Governor and ……

1759, Oct 25. Deed. Amelia Co. Deed Book 7, p. 197 dtd 25 Oct 1759. From Billington Williams of Amelia Co. Planter, to William Stoe, shoemaker, of same county, for 25 pounds, a certain tract of land of 120A in Amelia Co., on the upper side of the Great Branch of the Middle Seller Cr., and bounded by Arthur Leath, Rany, in being a certain tract formerly purchased by deed recorded in Amelia, by the said Williams from Thomas Flake. Signed Billington Williams. No witness.

Before the Division of Cumberland Parish, Nov 1, 1760: The land of Francis Rainey Do. John & George Langford; the land of George Langford Do. Fras. Rainey & Jon. Boseman. RT 1985, p 42. (Langford is mentioned as a neighbor on the grant of land to Francis Raney in 1769.)

Birth. Williamson Rainey (son of Francis Rainey) lists his year of birth as 1760 on marriage document made out 23 Nov 1779. He married Edith Morgan. Listed father as Francis Rainey and mother as Ann "Nanny". Source RT Vol 6, p. 159. From another source who got into the county marriage documents the document does not state Williamson’s birth or reference his age, his birthplace, and makes no reference to his mother of father, the only reference to Francis Rainey was as security.
1760, Nov 2. Birth. Williamson Rainey. On a Revolutionary War Veteran Pension application ;R8563, 23 October 1841; Williamson Rainey SR. stated that he was born in Mecklenburg Co. VA, Nov 2, 1760. He stated that proof of his birth and age were in a large family bible. That he had join service from Mecklenburg Co, VA and was and always had be a resident of same and no where else.

1761, April 28. Indenture made the 28 April, 1761, between William Raney Sen., of Suxxex County, and Amey Jackson, Daughter of said William Raney. Brunswick co., VA. Deed Book 6, p. 336.

1764, Aug 15. Land grant. Patent 36, p. 634. 15 Aug 1764. To John Langford, of Lunenburg Co., 200A on the branches of the Great Creek, adjoining Rottenberry lines.

1765, Jan. Will. Will Book B 1764-71, p. 191 of Sussex Co. VA. Will of William Rainey, dtd. 7 Jan 1765. Lists children. Sons: William, Nathanial, Dau. Mary any Amy and a fifth child Frances (no gender). Gave: William bed and furniture, chairs, small gun, two pots, half of Coopers, carpenter & gun stocking tools and half cyder casts….and one Negro man called Hector. To Nathanial the Plantation (249A) some more furniture, the other half of tools and castes. To dau. Mary Baley one Negro named Jane. The balance not mentioned to be equally divided. William to be executor. Wit. George Randall, James Cain, Isham Cain, Burnwell Green.

1766, May 8. Birth. Ann Raine, daughter Elizabeth, born 8 May 1766… no father. Bruton Parish Register (Chamberlayne).
