The following cemetery ison a private farm believed owned by Michael Maddox. Go Rt 57 toward Martinsville, turn left on SR 813 and follow the road where it curves to the right. The farm is on the right and the cemetery is visible from the road, sittingon a little hill in a cow pasture. Fenced, has a holly tree. This is the Gardnerfamilycemetery.

ALONG THE DRY FORK ROAD - Contributedby Dail Yeatts
(Due to the large number of names, these havenot been put into index, but they will be indexed as time passes-Gayle)
Cemeteries

The Hutchings Cemetery is the oldest known cemetery along the Dry Fork Road. The inscription on the tombstone of LucyHutchings, shows she was born in 1763 and died in 1830. Her brother, MosesHutchins was born in 1774 and died in 1836. He was a soldier in theRevolutionary War. The Hutchings Cemetery is a short distance west of WhiteOak Creek on the south side of the Dry Fork Road surrounded by a stonewall.

The next oldest cemetery is located on what isknown as the Charlie Owen farm that is presently owned by a Crane family. The farm is just off  Hither Lane near the heart of Dry Fork. Theoldest grave there is the grave of Edward Robertson who was alsoa Revolutionary War soldier. He was born in 1755 and died in 1833.

There are other cemeteries located on farms asfamily burial sites along with others located in church cemeteries. Thefollowing is an attempt to list cemeteries and the people who are buriedthere. One has to visit the old grave sites to see the graves that areonly identified by field rock which is a reminder of the difficult timesthat the settlers had during the early and developing days of the community. The unidentified people who were buried in graves, with only a rock tonote that someone has been placed there, were also active people of DryFork who made their contribution but go unrecognized. These people wereloved by their families, but no doubt,  the financial conditions atthe time of their deaths forced them to provide a meager burial. Whateverthe reason, the citizens of the community have been the beneficaries oftheir lives.

Some of the gravestones are weather worn to thepoint that it is impossible to read the words and numbers that were engravedon them. For the purpose of this listing, only the names, birth, and deathdates are given. If they were veterans of the Revolutionary, the CivilWar, or were killed in action during any war, an attempt has been madeto identify them as such. Based on the available information, no Dry Forkcitizen lost his life in either the Revolutionary or the Civil Wars.

The graves that are listed are graves near theDry Fork Road. In making this record there is a possibility that some wereoverlooked or the dates and spelling are not correct. If this is the case,a profound apology is offered to the family members for the oversight orerror. It is possible that some cemeteries were missed due to a lack ofinformation as to their location, they are overgrown, or covered over sothat the land may be used for other purposes.

The listing of the graves was made in early 1998.

Last summer, my
husband, my father, and I went down to the Hubbard/Lawrence farm, dug the
headstones out of the ground, and set them up.  Of course, the cows knocked
them right back over!!!  I have picturesof the headstones and this is what
is on them:

F.C. Hubbard
Born
Sept.    1819
Died
Sept. 18, 1897
Gone but not forgotten

Letitia S. Hubbard
Born
Mar. 25, 1831
Died June 24, 1909
Farewell, Dear Mother, Sweet Thy Rest

I have a copy of Letitia's Obituary and a picture of her and Franklin
Clement Hubbard.
We, also, dug up another headstone
that read:

Lawton M.
Son of
W.M.&M.H.Lawrence
Born Jan.28,1900
Died Aug.8,1900

I have been told that there are approximatedly12 to 15 graves in the
cemetery and I would like to know where the borderin around all of the
graves before a fence is put up.  The firstgrave there was for Hezekiah
Hubbard (9/12/1782 - 2/13/1822).  He wasthe father of Franklin Clement
Hubbard and his father, John Hubbard owned thisland prior to it being
willed to him.  Hezekiah fought in the Warof 1812.  I have, also, been told
that there is a slave cemetery located withinsite of the family cemetery.

I will update this in the near future. At present I have over 18,000
names within my family tree, and have so fartaken over 450
photos of tomb stones in the Callands area ofjust family
members. I want to document every cemetery thatI have family
members buried at, I know this is going to bequite the task, but
I have seen too many tomb stones that have beenbroken or so
worn with time that they are no longer legible,I want to preserve
them with photographs before they all disappear.

Roark/Hailey/Simpson

Recently while visiting Pittsylvania County, mycousin and I found the small
family cemetery of my great-great grandparents,James Edward ROARK and
Tabitha Shields ROARK.  .  There wereseveral graves marked with
rocks or stones.  The property where thecemetery is located is on Roark
Mill Road between Hurt and Motley.  Comingfrom Hurt on Prospect Road, you
make a right onto Roark Mill Road.  Theroad will cross Sycamore Creek only
once and you make the first right after you crossthe creek. (There is a
small waterslide sign there but I can't rememberthe name of it.) You have to
drive about 1/2 mile out that road along thetop of a  ridge and the cemetery
is on the right side of the road at the edgeof a field.  You can't see it
from the road because the owner of the propertyhas several buses and old
farm equipment sitting in front of it.

Cemetary on White Mountain on Ambrose Nelson Land

Could you credit Rubye Nelson Eilers with
the cemetary find? She's the one who traveledto Pittsylvania co. and hired
someone to trace the land forward from Ambroseto present time so she'd be
sure it was his, and she's very elderly and inpoor health and it would be
so nice to give her credit.   thanks. She live in Davenport, Iowa now in a
nursing home.    sue king

There is only one stone in this cemetary located on Ambrose Nelson's land he
got in 1779, but later known as Crain Land ashis son, James Nelson sold it
to a Crain.   The stone reads : JAMESANTONY CRANE      Company B  13 Bn
CSA Apr 28 1845
                                                              Jun 8 1918

Ambrose Nelson andwife are surely buried on his land but could find
no stones.

Austin Graves
I have been "grave hunting" today andwas most fortunate to find the folks
I was looking for!  I went looking for mygreat-great grandmother and found
her and more!  They are located in the Merchant Family Cemetery in
Pittsylvania County.  Take 58 West to StateRoad 622.  Go about 1/2 mile
and turn onto 952 to the right.  Go to theend of that road.  The cemetery
is very overgrown and you have to walk to itthru the woods about 1/4 mile
following a narrow path.  The cemetery issurrounded by a wrought iron
fence.  It is located on land now ownedby an attorney named Williams.  He
lives in the brick house to the left of the dead-end road.  You have to ask
for his permission to see the graves.  Thefollowing people are buried there:

Hester Elizabeth Cooper Austin - Born 16Nov 1840 and Died 1 May 1928
Oscar Leo Austin, Sr. (Her Son)
Sallie E. Austin (His Wife)
Oscar Leo Austin, Jr. (Their Son)

Walker Cemetery
There were other graves but I didn't havetime to get the rest of the information.
Going from Hurt down Prospect Road you will passthe New Prospect Baptist
Church.  Go several miles til the road forks, stay to your right and then
make a right on Roark Mill Road.  Go severalmiles, not sure how many, didn't
seem too far though (You'll pass Jacobs Roadon your left -- keeping going.
If you cross Sycamore Creek, you've gone toofar.). The cemetery is on a hill
top on the left side of the road. A large barnis near it.  It is easy to
spot but you have to climb a fence to get toit and the cemetery is also
fenced.   (If you stay on Roark MillRoad, it takes you to Motley.)
